Italian sandwiches and subs are still pretty new to me. Sure, the area is filled with delis that…read morewill make you all kinds of cold cut sandwiches to order. Perhaps I was paralyzed by all the possibilities. To make a long story short, I'm triangulating my way towards a favorite cold cut sub. At this point I know that it's not the standard "Italian Mix". I've learned to ask for the "fatty cappy" which gets you actual capicola instead of the weird spicy ham that Boar's Head makes. It's a tragedy that so many of our best delis rely on this national supplier of processed meats and cheeses. Also specifying sharp provolone is the only way to make sure you'll get a cheese on your sandwich that can stand up to the flavor of the cured meats. Nino's had both of these, and sliced them to order. Sandwiches also need to have shredded iceberg lettuce, onion, oil, and vinegar in order to cut through some of that fat. Nino's delivered on these too. And that's important because some delis have moved over to fancier leaf lettuce that just gets lost in all of that meat and cheese. I think my sandwich may also need something else, but I'm still trying to figure that out. Maybe some other meat to round out the cappy, like perhaps a prosciutto. I'm not sure. But I can't blame Nino's while I figure that out. Soon, I will learn to stop asking for those sad round reddish slices that pass for tomatoes. And thanks to Nino's for reminding me. It's a hard lesson, but an important one. The bread was good for coalescing around the sandwich and letting the fillings be the star of the show. I got mine on a roll. But I think these Italian sandwiches really require commitment. My goal was to be moderate, however this breed of sandwich seems to be a go big or go home kind of experience. Overall, Nino's feels more like a 3.5* Capital Region deli, but I'm bumping it up for being an old school holdout on this deeply commercialized strip of Central Avenue. It's a deli attached to a bread bakery. They have great old sausage making equipment, and a counter where you can stand and eat your sandwich overlooking the gridlock of cars trying to navigate an especially congested part of the local thoroughfare. Although I can imagine that not everyone would be as thoroughly charmed by the joint.

When I said that my son has a peanut allergy the employee said "it should be OK". Well "should" isn't good enough with a life threatening allergy. I asked about the bread which is a common cross contamination problem, and he said "Well there's a lot of ingredients - I don't have time to read them all". Most places simply ask if we want to see the label. When I suggested it he actually rolled his eyes and acted visibility put out. My son was upset and embarrassed, so we decided to leave. Ironically, I did get a look at the ingredients and it would have been fine. So because of his unprofessional behavior the empty sub shop lost customers for life.

The large subb is a bit more than what other chains charge, but I think what you get is slightly larger to compensate, and the bread quite fresh. DoorDash ordering was not yet available. I was quoted a 20 minute wait after ordering on Toast. I walk up to the counter at my scheduled pickup time, but was told it'll be ready soon. However, my order was ready to go, 20 minutes after pickup time with some orders after mine getting completed before my order. The kitchen was very busy, but not very organized or efficient. A couple folks from a nearby car dealership actually waited longer than me for a large order and they were also missing a few items (they checked their bags before leaving). Anyways, I was given a bottle of Boylan's Ginger Ale at no charge for the long wait. The 2 Spicy Chicken Wrap Combo ($7.99 plus tax) with crispy fries and small can of Shasta ginger ale were very similar to the McD spicy chicken snack wraps with a breaded chicken tender, spicy sauce & lettuce in soft flour wrap. The fries were nice & hot, crispy rough texture outside. The Chopped Cheese Sandwich ($8 plus tax) had plenty of grilled chopped beef with American cheese, holy sauce on a soft toasted bun. Other than the very long wait, I would probably come back again once the kinks are addressed and order the Holy Burger and a strawberry milkshake.

The fries were average and were not cooked to crispy. They frequently fell apart when I tried to stab them with the supplied plastic fork, resulting in the cheese falling onto the table or my fingers. The cheese itself was really gloppy, and the bacon was the stuff you find on salad buffets (it could be real bacon, but it doesn't taste like real bacon. So it is?) All in all, it was an okay offering. But, I left still with a hankering for good french fries.
