And how right she was. It's one of those chip shops which don't look like much from the outside, but with this place, it's the inside that counts. Located on the end of Pound Street, Broadway is Newtownards hidden gem. I love that it's called Broadway, symbolising the highest earning and most commericial theatre-land in the world, and it's located on Pound Street. Excellent. It actually does kinda represent the quality of the food, juxatposed with bargainous prices. The chips are always cooked to perfection, and they do these great mini pizzas too. A 7" plain cheese and tomato pizza, without toppings, is £1.60...an absolute bargain! And it's really, really tasty. If you fancy a 10" pizzas, or toppings, they're on the menu too. The only problem I have with Broadway is that it's opening hours are limited, as its business is mainly done during the day time. The only opens until 7pm (unfortunately), but it's really such a cracking wee chippie, I can't complain too much.

Easily missed behind the petrol station on the donaghadee road from ards is millars, it has a great…read moresit in area and the peppercorn chip is excellent, I'm fast becoming a chip connoisseur "and fat" Its not in the town centre of ards but about 15 minutes walk or two minutes drive away. Good menu , prices are decent, I got a chicken kebab chip, the chips were topped with chicken that was tender and smoky flavoured then topped with kebab sauce and mushrooms which was lovely, kebab sauce was tangy and sweet with a little touch of vinegary flavour , went really nice with the chicken and mushrooms. Was around £3.80 and was really filling. Millars also have meal deals and have a takeaway service not sure if they deliver. There's a seating area in the front entrance with a board with local advertising. Staff were friendly food came quickish. I would go again. This chippy is close to a petrol station and other shops. So lots of free parking.

It was only a one off, a fling if you will. But even so... The night of the shameful deed took place after the general election (also, debatably, accentuating the night of shameful deeds), when we decided we would go to Broadway in Newtownards. Unfortunately it was closed, but driving past The Terracotta a sudden scandalous notion came to me. With no regard for the loyal King's Court in Dundonald, I deviously suggested that we visit this new Chinese on Mill Street. My dad agreed, and out we hopped in a clandestine manner to complete the deed. Or buy a Chinese, whichever you prefer. The Terracotta is a fancy wee number. Plasma TV, slightly disconcerting mirrors, black leather seating and cool lighting. The menu is even fancier, and the girl actually apologised for the layout of it. Since neither my dad or I have a degree in menu translation / deciphering, we took a quick look and decided to ask if a couple of the dishes we couldn't find on the menu were actually available. Luckily, they were. A few minutes wait, and we darted home with the sinful Chinese. Hunger pervaded us, as we unwrapped the delicious scent of black bean sauce. Mmmm, it was lovely. Just a kick of chilli, not too overpowering. Dinner was devoured in a matter of minutes. Conscience-stricken, we have never returned to The Terracotta. Never has a further word even been breathed about it. Until now, that is. Ssssshhh...

The exception to this rule is when King's Court has been replaced by another, handier Chinese that happens to replace it in the nearness stakes. Just to clear that up...I like 'em one at a time, you see. Movilla Palace (only a Chinese could be named that) just so happened to be the closest takeaway to the house of the child I used to babysit, and so was frequently called upon for a late night binge. My boyfriend at the time would call them up, and then hop in the care for the two minute journey to the Chinese to collect the food. They were always quick, the black bean chicken chow mein was good, and the prices were totally affordable...£ 5.30 for the aforementioned dish, and only £1.60 for chips. Sweet. Yep, this place did nicely as a temporary replacement for King's Court. No hard feelings, eh?

One of the less innovatively named chips shops I've been to (it's on South Street, and…read moresurprisingly, it's a chippy), South Street Chippy makes up for its lack of ingenuity in terms name designation with its varied menu and very cool till service. Not only do they do your average fish and chip shop faves, they also have a wide range of subs, toasties, smoothies, freshly ground coffees and sweet and savoury specials. Oh my. Took me a wee while to get my head around all that, so I opted for a curry chip. Curry was lovely and mild (Lynne and hot food do *not* mix well at all), and the chips tasted great. My dad, who was with me that day, ordered a burger. Ah, but this wasn't any old burger! When he ordered, the order appeared on a screen at the till. He could see what options there were eg. salad, no salad, sauce, no sauce, onions (raw or cooked) etc etc., and thus could choose his perfect burger. Rather novel I thought. I had a bad experience with Piccolos recently…read more My fiance was returning from a long journey and I had said that I would order him in what ever he wanted as a treat. He is very nostalgic about his home town and was keen to try a pizza place he used to go to in his youth. There are several Piccolos pizzas around Northern Ireland and they have a good reputation so I thought nothing of ordering two pizzas to be delivered to the door for 7pm. My fiance was home, the house was tidy, the beer was poured and he was starving but 7pm came and went. I rang up and was told they were on their way. 7.30pm came and went I rang again - they are on their way madam. 8pm no pizza, 8.15 the pizzas arrived - cold and swimming in grease we had to bin them. A furious letter of complaint was written and we received two free pizzas which we have yet to claim - I don't think we will be back at Piccolos but as I always say, maybe they were having a bad day, short staffed or some other reason. I'm sure they haven't gained their good reputation for nothing.

The shop is very clean and there is ample space to sit and wait for your food. The people who run the shop are very friendly and remember you by name which is good, unfortunately the onslaught of chivvy employees with faces like slapped arses isn't quite so good! The food here is pretty good,, but as long as you don't have the chips from here, which in fairness have apparently improved recently but I haven't been here. They do good fish though, and their chicken options are really delicious, with them doing a really tasty Chicken Kebab! Their burgers etc are very good, but I don't come here because of the lacklustre chips, which disappoints me greatly!
