They may have opened other locations in recent year, but this stalwart of the Lisburn Road is still the king of the sandwich in Belfast, a title warranted by the frequent queues! With a selection of breads and fillings that would take weeks to fully read, never mind taste it can be a bit overwhelming, but with everything so fresh and flavoursome you'll never get bored with the combinations. And boy are they big, keeping you going way past dinner time! A personal favourite has to be chicken tikka on their crusty baguette but their soups are also great changing all the time and never just a boring vegetable. I always go to sandwichs shops if I'm looking a filling breakfast, doorsteps is one I've been to a few times and never had a bad experience, it's a reliable favourite with me. I ordered a southern fried chicken with bacon sub, salad and hot mayo. The chicken was cooking when I ordered and took a ten minute wait but when it came out it tasted great! Doorsteps isn't somewhere I would regularly go for lunch, but they do a large selection of sandwiches for pretty good value (although some of the sandwich prices vary wildly depending on what you have in them). Warning, can get very busy if you're going around 1pm, so either get in early, or order what you want in advance for collection. Seating inside is very cramped in the main area, and on occasion it can take a long time for your order to arrive if you're sitting in. The sandwiches here are CLASS. It's always busy, there is always a queue, but it moves quickly and they know how to sort it all out. The only place I've ever been to that does bigger, better, sandwiches is the Carnegie Deli in New York - and that's saying something. They have every God's amount of filling, sauce, spread, salad items that you might want or need for your sandwich, and a good choice of bread types too. They aren't stingy on fillings, in fact that's what they are known for, and you will come out feeling totally stuffed but happy because all the ingredients are very fresh and nothing is too heavy or fatty. I envy those who work in offices downtown that have doorsteps orders delivered for lunch almost every day - their delivery service is very popular. I would probably say that this is the best place to grab a sandwich in Belfast and is well worth the big trek up the Lisburn Road to get to it. The sheer width of the selection of breads, spreads, fillings and flavours on offer verges on the intimidating. There is every sandwich idea and taste catered for with plenty of house favourites colourfully written up on the wall but you can also name your own. The price, for what you get, is brilliant. You can get a massive sandwich and a bowl of lovely homemade soup for about five or six quid and I for one think that is amazing. The staff are great and always have time for a bit of craic and the cafe is always clean. The best sandwich shop in Belfast, bar none. They do a hefty sandwich. It's one of those places were the stuff falling out of your sandwich is almost enough to make a normal size sandwich! I used to be very fond of getting a big white roll with Cajun chicken (or was it Mexican chicken? I just used to point to it!). every time I leave here I'm stuffed. You'll regularly see a queue out the door of this place, sometimes up to 15 people, many of them getting their sandwiches to take away, but there's plenty of staff on and they all know what they're doing so things move along very smoothly. The place is clean and modern too, should you choose to sit in, and it's an excellent spot to sit in if it's a good enough day for them to have the door type windows open. read more

It will always remain a mystery to me why anybody would ever buy one of those pre-packed sandwichs in the wee plastic carton, with the runny mayonnaise and brown lettuce, when there are places like Doorsteps around. If you're feeling ravenous and in a rush, one of their sarnies on fresh wholemeal will do the job; everything on offer is delicious for about four quid you will receive enough food to feed three grown men. You have to respect somewhere that only does a couple of things, but does them really well. I tend to not sit in here, as it's always (rightly) busy, and parking can be a bit of a pain on the Lisburn Road, but it's well worth leaving the house a bit earlier and going out of your way for. Doorsteps was one of the first sandwich bars in Belfast and has generally had a long long queue every lunch time since then. Even though there are umpteen other lunch spots to choose from on the Lisburn Road, Doorsteps is always bunged as we say in Norn Iron. Unless you have spent your life under the proverbial rock, come from outside of Belfast, or are just terribly posh, you'll know that big fat sandwiches are also known as doorsteps and in this case, the cap definitely fits. The sandwiches from this place are huge, heavy and satisfy even my gluttonous appetite. That doesn't make me sound very attractive. does it? Good job I'm one of those people who can eat what they like and stay the same weight as they were at 15. Mind you, I was a big girl for my age back then. So, the sandwiches - totally great. Go for one of their set combos of fillings like turkey, cranberry and stuffing, or create your own masterpiece. Try the roast beef, caramelised onions and grated cheddar. Heaven. There are a few tables to eat in, but I think that one of these bad boys is best eaten in private so slink away to a quiet place and dig in. They taste best when you have some of the salad stuck to your chin, bread in your front teeth and mayo on whatever you're wearing. Comparing this one to the monstrosity in the city centre, I would say they probably belong to different sandwich companies altogether. Had I visited the one in town first, I could safely guarantee that I would not have come here. Luckily I came here first and it inspired me to try the one in town (and unintentionally not to stray from here again). The sandwiches here are excellent. The staff seem to genuinely care if you enjoy your food. When they make it, they chat and seem to be actually interested in what they are doing and who they are serving. Rightly lauded as Belfasts best sandwich shop, Doorsteps serve up hearty sandwiches on wholemeal bread that have Belfastians (is that a word?) queueing out the door. With a huge range of fillings, fresh crusty bread and fresh ingredients that will ensure you'll never settle for a Spar or Mace pre-packaged sandwich again. Most lunchtimes this place is jammed with workers getting their lunchtime nutrition, but you wont be waiting too long as the staff are pretty efficient. It didn't take me long to understand why this place was called 'doorsteps'!!! They do sandwiches mainly and their sandwiches are so good they would never need to do anything ever again. They should get the keys to the city. But they do all the usual stuff that a sandwich place would do soups, salads, now even burgers I believe!!!!! If you go at lunch time expect it to be busy, but it always seems to be pretty quick until to have the uncomfortable decision of choosing which delight you want to order. There are plenty of servers so waiting time is never that long and I think it only adds to the taste bud anticipation!!! It's got the pretty decent menu that you would expect from a doorsteps. The staff are friendly enough but are unfortunately slow regardless of how busy the place is. They appear a bit pushed when the place is full, and they appear a bit pushed when its nearly empty. Not just the kind of pushed that means that your order is going to take a while but the kind where they project 'busy' at you. That said, the quality of the ingredients in the food is excellent but just tripped up by the slightly rushed preparation. My sandwich was nice and quite well filled but all the sauce and flavour was in a small lump in the middle. All in all its a place that maybe needs to settle in a bit more and run a bit more smoothly but all the potential is there, it just needs a little nudge to sort it out a bit. read more

I've never actually been here but when I was working i got a sandwich as all the other staff in my work were ordering from there so I decided to get a sandwich too, i ordered the chicken and stuffing on brown bread, first impressions the sandwich was well filled and fresh, the chicken was moist and the stuffing was fruity which i don't normally go for, it was a tasty sandwich and i would consider going here when I'm in town. read more

We've tried the location on Botanic Avenue and were all well pleased. The in laws were up and in the mood for something fresh and inexpensive. I had a menu floating around, so they had a look and we all headed out. The sandwich fillings are endless and we saw beautiful fry ups and salads being prepared upon entering this tiny cafe. The staff were friendly and helpful as it was our first time. They were kind enough to bring out our son's tuna on wholemeal bread first. He ripped right through his sandwich. I ordered ham, smoked German cheese and honey mustard on a fresh out of the oven baguette, hubby had a great chorizo burger and baked potato and the in laws went for the chicken stir fry and a cajun chicken wrap with side salad. Everything was freshly prepared and careful attention was given to our order. All were happy with their choices and we promise to be back soon. Doorsteps is alright. If they manage to get your order right. I can't eat onions. At all. Every single time I'm in here I always ask for my order without onions. I repeat this request at least twice, once whilst waiting on my melt I even asked the girl could she double check it didn't contain onions. You guessed it, always onions. I just don't understand why a simple request is too hard to follow. Since my last visit, were I specified 3 times that I couldn't eat onions and received onions, I haven't been back. It stresses me out. Something I don't think is appropriate for a sandwich bar. That, and I've found the food to be hit and miss. All in all it's not a bad sandwich bar, and I do sometimes crave a door steps, but it's just not worth the effort. You would think I was asking them to stand and pick them out of my food. You can also sit in, though for me, every time I have been in its be really busy so it can be tough to find a good seat without have to move for people cueing etc. But all the food is brilliant, good value.
