Hubby got a combination sandwich with sweet peppers dipped, and they wrapped it really well so it didn't make a mess in the car. The sandwich had Italian beef and sausage on it. Good portions of meat. I ordered a plain Italian beef sandwich. It was a real treat and tasted better than I remembered. We both ordered fries. I love a good crinkle cut French fry. They were hot and fresh. The food was ready quickly and tasted fresh. We won't hesitate to go out of our way again to stop here.

Unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. The hotdog bun was half fresh and half stale, not sure how that is possible! And the French fries also did not taste fresh and were warm not hot. The space, however, was well designed and nice place to spend some time eating. Large parking lot too. Portillo's is pretty consistent, so it was a bummer to drive 40 minutes for a subpar meal. I hope they work out the kinks.

The service was very good. Very polite and attentive. As an aside, I have to say that wanting a tip for just making sandwiches, is annoying. Anyway, I wound up tipping 10%,which was about $3.50. It's crazy how the prices jumped! $7.99 for a mini, which is 4 inches long. I got an Italian sub and got the small size for $10.99! And that's without even a pickle to keep it company! My husband ordered a tuna sub, a medium for $11.99! And an order of fries for $3.99. The fries were delicious, crispy and hot, right out of the fryer. The meat on my sub was indistinguishable. It tasted alright but not like a real Italian submarine. I have to add that the table was dirty and we had to clean it before sitting down. I guess we have to lower our expectations or just stay home.

The place was hopping with both dine-in and take-out orders, but there was an employee hustling to clean the tables on this Friday about 1PM. I managed to find a clean table and filled my cup while waiting (they have a Pepsi fountain machine). To sample a couple of different sandwiches I got a small Chicken Chipotle Crunch and small Grilled Italian with a side of fries. I should have gone with mini as small is quite generous and filling (see pictures). I liked the fried onions in the Chicken Chipoltle Crunch and most of the favor came from the sauce. The tomatoes on both sandwiches were a bit too pale and tasted watery. The Grilled Italian was definitely the more flavorful of the two with great seasoning on the meats. The bread was nice and soft. The side of fries were of the coated variety and were fresh, hot, and crisp with the breading having a great seasoning. All the hard surfaces and glass windows made for quite the echo chamber, and even with half the tables occupied the noise level was quite considerable. There is a variety of seating with bar, booth, and table (different sizes).

The big TV menus above the registers give it an initial fast-food impression. But I was glad to find the quality the same and that my favorites are still available. I ordered the New York Yankee which is still a ridiculously huge sandwich full of wonderful and delicious pastrami. The bread looks like marbled rye, but sadly I didn't pick up any rye flavor. I also had the salad bar, and although at first it looked smaller than I was used to, it still had lots of variety with good ingredients. And of course I always forget they have soft-serve ice cream and the little kid in me is always surprised and delighted. Service was quick and polite.
