I suggested we just go check out The Texan and at least restock on fluids and snacks for our upcoming beach trip. As soon as we walked in, we all gravitated to the grab-n-go section. Cold items included salads, sandwiches, fruit and veggie cups, boiled eggs, pies, and other desserts. Then we drifted towards the hot items: pizza, tacos, burgers, and other plates, but I was curious about the BBQ sliced brisket sandwich ($9.99). It was so good! Not soggy. Loads of brisket! They also had donuts, kolaches, and muffins in another display. The food options were plentiful but the chopped beef sandwich and fries that I got were a bit disappointing; the fries were once crispy some hours ago but became a soggy lump of sadness once trapped in its plastic container in a hot box. The buns in the sandwich were also smushed/soggy beyond repair with moisture and residual pickle juice; the disadvantages of lower food turnover definitely affects the freshness of the product a bit. They still have a good selection of chips, drinks, and merch so it's a step above the usual run of the mill stop.

On this visit, my cousin's wife recommended Surfside Sandwich Shoppe, so we met her and her two kids there and also invited some friends who live on the island. The first challenge was actually finding the place. Even with GPS, it's surprisingly easy to drive past because it's difficult to see until you're almost directly alongside it. Parking was also very limited and a little challenging with our group. Inside, most of the space is occupied by the kitchen and bar, while the outdoor seating area is considerably larger. The outdoor area worked well for the kids, with a chalkboard and some large stackable toys to keep them occupied. I ordered the Cuban Press, while the kids went with burgers. They also have a pretty extensive drink menu. We tried the margaritas, which were okay, although smaller than I expected. Unfortunately, the food took a very long time to come out, and a couple of things got lost along the way. They forgot our mozzarella and marinara appetizer as well as the broccoli salad I had ordered as my side. My Cuban Press was very good, although it's not a traditional Cuban sandwich since they use pulled pork. Authentic or not, I enjoyed the sandwich and the accompanying sauce. The kids were happy with their burgers as well. I didn't get a chance to try the shrimp bisque, but others in our group had it and reported that it was excellent. Overall, there were things we liked, particularly my sandwich and the outdoor area for the kids, but the very long food wait and forgotten items made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been. With a larger group of kids, it also wasn't necessarily the easiest place for us. We might come back without the kids and sit inside to enjoy the bar, or I'd consider grabbing a sandwich to-go in the future. The Cuban was good enough that I'd certainly eat it again.
