I had the two meat special that Mr. McMillan suggested for me. The saying in Texas is everything is bigger in Texas, well this Beef Brisket and Pulled Pork sandwich was huge, you won't walk away hungry. The staff was friendly but the food and the atmosphere was not good. We ordered two meat plates and 2 waters (over $60!). The food arrived in styrofoam containers. We had planned to eat it there, but when the food arrived, we opened the containers and we were SWARMED with flies. We decided on takeout and took it back to our camper. The beans were okay but the potato salad looked like tapioca pudding, and because of the fly situation, I wondered if flies had already tasted it. The brisket appeared to be left over from several days ago. The owner used a fly swatter, and waved it around. Something more needs to be done about the flies. read more

I made a special trip to McMillan's BBQ after having read about it in Texas Monthly's list of recommended BBQ places. Perhaps it was just an off-day when I visited, but I was quite disappointed in the food. I stopped by around 2pm on a Saturday and ordered the sliced sausage plate with a side of barbecue beans and potato salad. The sliced sausage was cold -- not just room temperature, but cold like it had been taken out of the refrigerator and allowed to sit on a counter for 20 minutes. Being that the sausage was cold it wasn't very moist or flavorful, even when dipped in sauce. My partner's meal suffered from the same cold-meat issue. The potato salad was unlike anything me or my dining partner had encountered before. It was very sweet, as if it was made with miracle whip and sugar. The barbecue beans were, however, hot and very flavorful. In fact, the beans are probably better than beans I've had at most other barbecue establishments. The eclectic interior makes for an interesting dining atmosphere, especially with the walls covered in dollar bills signed previous customers. Service was friendly, although it felt like the lady working the counter was doing double duty as she kept going into the back and disappearing for periods of time. Another young man kept walking out to the counter but he too was busy doing something in the back. Several other patrons came in while we were there and ordered meals, which was surprising given that the restaurant is literally the only thing for miles around. Nothing about this establishment really stood out, aside from the good beans. I might or might not give them a second chance if I happen to be on the road to Goliad, however I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

THIS IS THE BEST BBQ YOU WILL EVER HAVE. PERIOD. I first tried McMillan's about 13 years ago, on a family trip to Victoria (Goliad/Fannin). My mother already knew of McMillan's and made sure we got a fill before we left town. I have yet to try any BBQ as delicious, and I have eaten plenty of BBQ in my lifetime. Trust me. I know that inside certain city limits, there are restrictions on how long you can smoke the meats - due to fire hazards. Luckily for McMillan's, they don't have that problem. Tender meat that falls off the bone doesn't need barbeque sauce. I tell people this all the time, but you would have to have had good BBQ to know that. Seasoned, flavorful & plenty are the words I would use to describe the food at McMillan's. I can't wait to go back to visit - I might even stay longer than a day. Had heard about this place from the Lady at the visitor center in Victoria as being a must stop place at which to eat. WOW !!! Louis McMillan has proven to us that he is the master of the low and slow BBQ method of which we have never had the privilege to have been blessed with before in our lives. Tastes SO much better than the average BBQ style around the country. Just can not give enough praise. The smoke flavor has deliciously embedded itself in the meats. We ordered a 4 meat plate two sides and my sister and her bo ordered a 3!meat plate. You pay when you leave, which added to the charm however, we paid a whopping total of $155!!! We had no idea how much it would be and never thought we would ever pay this much for bbq for 4. Too expensive, provided we had BYOB. Although the taste was good, it was NOT worth 155 dollars. Super dissatisfied with the lack of information about the cost as the plate cost was not displayed. Advice to the owner: Let people know how much it will be when they order so they can adjust the amount as needed. Unfortunately we didn't get an estimated cost and assumed it wouldn't be more that 40 bucks for 2. Will not go back for lack of transparency on the cost. read more

We called late afternoon Monday and found Mr. McMillan was going to be there for a while and picked up some Pork Butt & Sausage. Didn't realize that it was a 50 Best Texas Monthly BBQ winner, but when we started talking, I knew we were at the right place. The pork was FANTASTIC along with the sausage, just the right snap and spice. We're heading back home to Austin area in the morning and getting some brisket and pork ribs. Can't wait!!! Just left McMillian's BBQ. My family and I have been customers for more than a decade. But, after this visit, I will never go back. Louis McMillian, the owner, charged me $245 for a "family deal" that he recommended when we were ordering. That's $245 for four guys to eat a bbq lunch in Fannin, Texas. When I challenged him on the bill he insulted me then lied about the amount of meat. He told me that he charged me $30/lb. First, he said it was 6 lbs of meat. Then, when his math didn't add up, he changed it to 7 lbs. I then questioned that his menu behind the counter showed prices per pound from $22.95 to $28.95. Then nearly he changed it to nearly 9 lbs. He was just making up the numbers as he went. He further tried to justify his enormous bill by saying he pays $6.75/lb for choice brisket. (Incidentally, I bought 22 lbs of choice brisket last week at HEB for $4.99/lb, which is not the wholesale pricing he has access to, mind you.) He then bragged that he charges $110 for a 16 ounce ribeye, and asked me when the last time I ate out was. Lol. This is unethical and I will never go back. Avoid this place. read more

Don't think we've ever done this but it was so good we went again today for his smoked ribeyes - what a great taste, with homemade mashed potatoes, green beans and a salad! Ordered the day before and was cooked to perfection! Trying to hit all the best BBQ places in the Great State and McMillan's is right at the top! First of all, anyplace whose walls are covered in dollar bills stands out but the BBQ is top-notch. And Mr. McMillan, standing behind the counter and sharing his BBQ secrets and lore made it even more fun. We shared the 3 meat plate with brisket, sausage and ribs, sides of coleslaw and beans. The fatty brisket was perfection and the lean was amazingly tender. Sausage had that nice snap to the casing - so good. Husband loved the ribs but they were not for me. Coleslaw had that nice vinegary tang with sweetness just the way I like it - not creamy, thank goodness. Beans had a nice good Texas flavor. And Mr. McMillan kept us entertained while we chowed down - a wonderful way to spend lunchtime off a Texas highway. By the way, the address is a little misleading - it's not even visible from Hwy. 59. Turn off at the exit for Fannin/2987 and go south, then west on the first street just a block, next to the post office - or as Mr. McMillan says 'just follow the smoke'! read more

Have eaten here several times and they always deliver great barbecue. Typically get the brisket or ribs. The owner smokes the brisket for over 15 hours and that kind of dedication shows in the end result. Ribs are excellent, some of the best I've ever had. Sides are great too; I especially liked the beans which had a bit of a ranch-style flavor which i really like. The owner is a very friendly guy and loves to talk barbecue with anyone. They have a large outdoor dining area and the whole place is in a very relaxing country setting. The inside decor is very cool too; the walls are full of signed one dollar bills put there by patrons. Mr.: We ate outside; the inside of the restaurant seemed a little dreary. Of the 3 meats, the sausage was the best. The brisket and ribs had excellent flavor; ribs had BBQ sauce on it that it didn't even need. Without sauce it had nice pop and good flavor. The brisket and the ribs were a little drier than I like. But then again, according to Mr. McMillan, what do I know of good BBQ. Evidently good flavor and moist and tender BBQ is not considered good BBQ. But I still give him a 4 out of 5 on our Yelp review which makes him a whole lot better than most of the BBQ places on the Texas Monthly Top 50 that we've tried so far. The beans and potato salad also had a very good flavor but the beans were a little undercooked. I chose not to get into a conversation with Mr. McMillan about what I know about beans because I may know not "know beans" about beans. Ms.: Brisket may have had the best flavor I've had yet on the Texas Monthly's Top 50 Best BBQ places (this place made out our 19th); I ate the flavorful goodness near the fat. But I couldn't quite give the place a 5 simply because it was a bit too dry for my taste. I was thinking that since it was a Sunday that perhaps the food had been warmed up from the day before and that if I came on a different day it would surely be a 5; however, I was informed by Mr. McMillan that his BBQ is never warmed up and is served fresh 7 days a week, meat constantly on the grill, cooked for 16 hours each. Sausage and ribs had great flavor too--no complaints there! But just like the brisket, the ribs were a little dry. The potato salad contained sweet pickle, of which I am not a fan. The beans were undercooked but would have been great otherwise. The inside was a little dark and thus "gloomy" for me so I opted for the large outdoor dining area which was very peaceful. The inside is covered with $1 bills that visitors provide and sign with their name or a motto; very neat. I would have added my own $1 bill to the wall had our visit not ended on a down note when the pit master, upon his asking how we enjoyed the food, did not feel satisfied with that it was good and had great flavor. He then asked us what we were looking for in a BBQ at which point we reiterated that his BBQ was very flavorful but felt it was just a bit dry. He seemed to take it as an insult. He informed us that he is one of only about 10 real pitmasters in Texas, teaches classes on BBQ, and said among other things that "some people, doesn't matter how good of BBQ you put in front of them, aren't going to like it." This place has everything you need and more. Hands down, the best BBQ I've ever had!! (I'm from Texas, I've had plenty!) We got a sample platter to share, chicken was delicious with excellent flavor, sausage was amazing, brisket was great! I specially enjoyed the flavor of the bbq sauce. And if that weren't enough, we were greeted by the pitmaster himself, Mr. McMillan was an excellent host and instantly became a friend as if we've known each other for years. I haven't been in awhile but that is one of the best people and bbq pitmasters I have ever met. I went in once and had lost my wallet with two other broke guys. He fed us and I paid next trip through a month or so later. He had no problem with the fact I didn't have any money on me. I'm sure he doesn't make a habit of that. I just have to say he's quite the fella I'd stop anytime I'm in the area and enjoy some of that BBQ. I'd say it's as good as anyone's. I have won many BBQ cookoffs and I'd pick his over mine anytime. That's what I'd call some of the best ever. Better than franklins or city market or blacks BBQ is this place here. Ordered brisket plate and rib plate. Very tender, savory brisket able to be pulled apart with a fork. Great beans, good potato salad. The barbecue sauce-- which they are very generous with-- has the best balance of sweetness and tanginess that doesn't overwhelm the meat. Finally, the ribs had no trouble pulling off the bone. They had a sweet blackened crust and still maintained good moisture. Best brisket and ribs I've ever had. The owner has a fantastic personality and was very generous. Prices are more than average but you most definitely get your money's worth. 2 plates of food were enough to satisfy 3 people. The dining area did seem to have a fly problem, but after eating such amazing barbecue, that flies are not what I'm going to be thinking of when I think about eating here. Exactly what I envisioned when I pictured classic Texas BBQ. Owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. Having said all that, solid BBQ, but not in the upper echelon of Texas BBQ . Fatty brisket had a good flavor and was well rendered, however it was a bit dry. Ribs were more of a grilled rib rather than indirect smoked ribs. Not my style or Texas style IMO. Sausage was my favorite meat. Nice snap to the skin and good flavor. Potato salad was some of the best mustard based potato salad I've had. Worth a stop for sure. read more
