Well, I threw my Tesla in the trash all because of a system malfunction. Now I'm back to what I love most: European cars and a stick shift. I decided to get an older car so I can shift into lower gears without a computer messing things up like on that stupid Tesla. While waiting for my European car to get turned up at the mechanic shop, I decided to go on a stroll--but not just any ordinary stroll. This was a walk through the neighborhood to get some pizza at Subway Café. Just by the name, you would think it's underground like a subway in New York City (which I would never ride, purely because it might stink and ruin my appetite). Instead, I stopped into this hidden gem to grab a pie. Of course, I ordered a plain, original pizza, well-done. I'll tell you, this pizza was different--just like me. It had the sauce on top and the cheese on the bottom. The restaurant actually told me the secret to why they get it so crispy, but I'm not going to share that; there are too many leaked secrets in the world already! And not by me This spot was great. It was small, old-school, and had a vibe that felt like Brooklyn, New York, which I think has the best pizza. However, these are not your normal-sized New York slices; it's more of a personal which makes it very unique. As I bit into the first slice, it was like fireworks in my mouth. The sauce had a very rich taste, and the cheese was excellent with a perfect pull. I could tell it wasn't just cheap cheese bought from a local grocery store. Someone put their heart and soul into making this pie. The dough--which is the best part--was amazing. The pie is a flatbread, but the crust had a slightly sweet taste that I really enjoyed. Just talking about it right now is making my mouth water! I highly recommend this place and their pizza. If you're really hungry, grab two for yourself--I'm sure you won't regret it. Atmosphere: walked into gorgeous lighting that has a feel of art decor period. Beautifully painted walls with stone work. The lady promptly sat us in a nice cozy booth. Nose level was low so I could hear my friend talk. Waitresses were so friendly! Drinks: they had many cocktails & drinks to choose from. Margarita was good. I got 2 of them. Dinner: veggie pizza is good and crust crispy. Finally, a place that puts enough sauce on a pizza. Score! Dessert: we got the lemoncello cake. Icing was not heavy and cake was light. This place has been around forever! I FINALLY got to stop in and have dinner with my fam. Servers are great - engaging, funny, helpful and all around awesome. The food was plentiful and tasty, though basic and straight forward. Salad was surprisingly large and flavorful. My only real complaint was the booth was really too small for 4 ppl and their food. I ordered the Spicy Buffalo pizza this was my first time trying it and it brought a nice heat to it! Two orders of Pepperoni & Cheese Pizzas and a Meat Lovers rounded out our dinner! I'll cut to the chase: excellent old-world style pizza. Not a good cheesesteak. High prices with small-sized portions. I love the pizza here, but I could easily eat two of these. Remember geometry class and how you use 3.14 to see how much area your pizza pi contains? Nah, me neither but I can easily see the pie is about the size of two slices of a large 16" pizza. The cheesesteak was literally a sandwich. That's what the menu said and that's what it certainly was. I'll pass next time and opt for a cheesesteak pizza if I felt the need, otherwise I'm only getting pizza here. Maybe a salad. I think they might be large...but I can't remember my last visit. I have been coming to Subway Cafe for over 40 years and i was very disappointed with my last spaghetti and meatballs dinner. First off the portion was for a child. second the spaghetti was over cooked and the sauce was watered down and bland. Third the meatballs tasted freezer burnt. Went there Friday during lunch. The two ladies behind the bar were very friendly and took my to-go order right away. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and a slice of peanut butter pie. With the Tip it was $20. Took out the 2 boxes and went back to work. First thing I noticed was the container with the peanut butter pie was very "Lite". No weight at all. Upon opening the piece was very small. I expected a chocolate covering on the slice but it only had a few chocolate chips. Upon "Forking" the piece was still partially frozen and the taste was bland. I honestly could not taste any peanut butter at all. The crust was very hard, thin and tasteless. It did not break evenly with the fork and filling. For $6.50 leave it off the menu. The Pepperoni pizza was a personal sized offering which at first looked great when opening the box. A nice complement of cheese and pepperoni with an abundance of sauce. Upon further inspection the crust looked very thin which made it very hard to seperate the slice from the remaining pie. The crust did not hold up making tasting a cumbersome chore. The taste was bland at best, with the abundant sauce needing more flavor. Another creation best left in the kitchen. We drove by this place often over the last three years and I decided to be the first one from our work group to give it a try. The outside is quaint with plenty of parking and easy access the Bar interior is Nice with a Rustic Feel. My friends and I stumbled upon this place by accident while navigating an accident on Cameron. We had heard about the infamous pizza but didn't realize this place was close enough to eat at during our lunch. Of course having heard about all the pizza, I got a pepperoni and mushroom personal size pizza. It's around $6.50 to start and all the toppings are extra. Also don't expect to come in here with options of veggies besides mushrooms and peppers as options of veggies on your pizza FYI. Also their pizza is unique for their crust that's thin and crispy. My friend compared it to a type of crust called "cracker crust". It was my first time having it and is great for people who like light thin crunchy crusts that hold their own. Definitely going to try the meat lovers options next time. This place is small and cozy so not ideal for bit parties. They have your typical central PA Italian foods also and have bar area if you are interested. A Harrisburg classic. Their tasty pizza is unique due to both the excellent sauce and the use of provolone cheese instead of mozzarella. The pizzas will certainly feed one but are also large enough to share. Subway Cafe is also one of few places I've been in that serves old-school "schooners" of beer. We spent Memorial Day weekend way from Harrisburg, and by the time we got back into town late Monday night, I had zero desire to go grocery shopping to get items for lunches. So there I was, sitting at my desk on Tuesday wondering what the heck I should get for lunch! 'Burger King?', I thought; but then quickly dismissed the notion of BK from my mind when I remembered that Jackson House was right down the street. After several minutes of pondering, I decided to consult my SME, Google. Google showed me just how close Subway Café was. This was a place that I had been wanting to try for a while, so it was a no brainer. Food: I came for the pizza. With so many glowing reviews, and its long-standing presence in the community, I figured it had to be delicious. It was very good, but I warn you that this is not what you are used to. I did not know this going in, and I almost let it affect my disposition on the pizza. So let this review be both helpful and educational! First, I asked if they did 'slices'. They do not, but they do have 6.5 inch little pies for about 6.50 (cheese only). I knew I wouldn't eat the whole thing in one sitting, but I figured, 'what the heck'. So I ordered a whole pie. Now, he warned me ahead of time that this was a pie with a thin crust. Honestly, that term is thrown around so loosely that I just ignored him and awaited the food. This pizza is different. If you are into crackery-thin pizza crust, a light veneer of cheese, all topped with homemade tomato sauce, you will go bonkers for this pizza. For me, it is not my jam. Despite that, I can respect it for what it was... Dough: The dough resembles something a little thicker than a cracker. The flavor reminded me of Water Crackers. Carr's is the traditional brand that makes he crackers I am referring to. In fact, the flavor was almost identical. For me, I like doughy, pillowy, tender, and slightly fluffy pizza dough with a good chew. This is the complete opposite. If you like crackery, very thin pizza crust, this will rock your world. Do NOT come into this restaurant expecting NY Style pizza, you will be sorely mistaken and likely not enjoy this pizza. (Dough: 4/5) Cheese: A unique blend of mozzarella and what I believe was aged provolone cheese. I may be wrong, but that is what it tasted like to me. The cheese had a just a little bit of 'funk' in there. On this pie, it was very good (4/5) Sauce: This was the incredible element of the pizza. I may, if given the opportunity, drink this sauce. It was fabulous. Definitively homemade and very well seasoned. For my preference, I like my sauce a touch sweeter with a hit of fresh basil. Despite my own personal preference though, this sauce is legit. In my opinion, the sauce needs to be a touch sweeter to balance out the 'funky' saltiness of the cheese; but for this pie, this sauce works. (Sauce 4 / 5) Food: 4 / 5 Service: Outstanding. The guy behind the counter seemed to really care about and value the customers in the restaurant. He even was conversational -- an added bonus! Definitely felt like he was inviting me into his home for a meal. That's serious pride, and I appreciate it. Service: 5 / 5 Atmosphere: located inside an OLD building in downtown Harrisburg, before I walked-into this place, I thought it was going to be a dump. The complete opposite and further proves the old adage that 'looks can be deceiving. Very clean, very well kept, and just a super cool spot. Loved the vibes and I loved the overall 'feel' of the joint. Will be back to try something else. Atmosphere: 5 / 5 Price: For what I got, $8 after tip and tax was a little on the expensive side. I personally would not pay that again, but not necessarily because it was over-priced. Mostly because this type of pizza isn't how I like my pie. Still though...it was a little much. Compared to a value meal at BK, Subway, or even the aforementioned Jackson House though, and I suppose it is pretty in-line with what I would have paid elsewhere. Price: 3 / 5 Final Thoughts: Again, this pizza is not for you if you are like me and like classic NY-Style pie. Though, despite that, I believe that this is unique gem that you should checkout and at least try. It wasn't for me, but you may fall in love with something new! Or...old? Probably a 3.5 stars but I'm rating it up because of the friendly service and fierce loyalty of the locals. My friend and I had dinner at the bar because it was crowded in the restaurant. The bartender was delightful and I was glad we sat there. Started with the goldfish bowl of light beer and had the spaghetti with meat sauce and salad. The dressing was SO GOOD: apple cider vinaigrette with parmesan and olive oil and some other spices. The spaghetti was pretty standard but good. I would have ordered a special if I was hungrier but noticed that the specials sold out quickly while we were there so they must have been good! Decor is very kitschy and the T-shirts looked really cute. There were water level marks in the restaurant for various flooding levels in the past fifty years or so (kinda blew my mind). I came here on a Tuesday afternoon for a lunch with a coworker. We both got the pizza. Although it's not too bad, I didn't think it was that great either. It reminded me a little of the frozen single serve pizzas you buy in the grocery store for around $1 with the thin crust. I'm not saying I wouldn't visit here again to try something else because I definitely will. Sandwiches/burgers looked pretty good and they seemed popular also. Pizza Review I love being introduced to great pizza places! This is a spot I've driven by plenty of times but would never think to stop. A group of us went here on our work lunch and were in/out in an hour even though the tables/bar seats were full. The pizza was recommended, so we all got one. Each one is a personal pizza the size of a large dinner plate, and is more than enough for lunch. Not sure if it is, but the thin crust tastes like phyllo dough. Either way, it's light and crispy. Everyone ordered different toppings and all were enjoyed. My one complaint is that the only sauce served has meat, so if you want vegetarian you have to order the white pizza which is served without sauce. Five stars for a unique dining experience! This is a great, old-fashioned neighborhood Italian restaurant, famous for its unusual version of pizza -- crust topped with a layer of cheese and sauce on top. I've never had anything like this in a lifetime of pizza-eating, and was unsure if I'd like it, but it was great, a totally different pizza experience. The sauce was smooth and spicy, and reminded me of the spaghetti sauce of my childhood -- and that's a compliment. The proper beverage to accompany Subway's pizza is a shared fishbowl of beer. Sure its fun to eat fancy. But there's really nothing like a good dive bar. ESPECIALLY one like Subway Cafe. Its clean, its affordable, and its DELISH. Its been a Harrisburg gem for many many years and you can feel the history in the place even though they've been good at maintaining the place. They're known for their pizzas and they are quite yummy but I actually enjoy their pasta dishes. The sauce is consistent and tastes homemade (I assume it is). Its a simple sauce but it tastes so good and makes me feel so good. Also their fishbowls of beer bring the whole experience together. Its a local joint but welcoming and its family friendly too. I saved room for dessert this past time and I am glad I did. The peanut butter pie is amazing. Its more like an ice box pie which is perfect after a savory meal. Not as heavy as like a cream pie. And I spied the table next to us loving the eclair so I'd like to try that sometime when I have more room. First off if you go on a Friday make sure to get there before 6:30pm because this place fills up fast! I got the meat lovers pizza and as weird as it sounds, it may have had too much meat. I would personally select another option, as they give A LOT of toppings. I liked the thin crust pizza. It was cooked perfectly. This is a unique place also that I can't even compare to another pizza place. As for draft beer, they had a couple options only but at $5 for a 32 oz fishbowl, how can you not like that! The parking lot was packed with cars but there was surprisingly an open table for us in this otherwise crowded 20 table restaurant. The servers were great and brought our food out quickly. I really don't see the hype. Hubby wanted to come here since he hadn't been here in 40 years. It's a small place and it was definitely crowded by the time we left. The bar stools are positioned directly in front of a brick wall. It's difficult to walk behind the bar stools if there are people sitting in them as the distance between the wall and the stools is no more that three feet. I'm on a new eating plan and other than a salad, there was really nothing I could eat that fit in with my plan. It's all pasta, fried foods, and pizza. So hearing their pizzas were good, I decided to try the "healthiest" pizza I could find...a grilled chicken white pizza. The chicken was dry. Really dry. And the pizza was...flavorless. It was really meh. Hubby had the veal parm and he said it was pretty good. They are also really pricy for what you get. My little personal pizza was almost $12. Service was quick and very friendly.
