The main store, in Altoona, is a couple of blocks and a few turns from the main streets that run through town, and I was not impressed with the neighborhood. The building is run down and when you walk in the most accurate descriptive word that comes to mind is dingy. There is a large group of locals at a table, though, which, to me, is always a sign of good things, so I decide to wait and order. So I waited. And waited. The staff was disorganized,but not unfriendly. Be forewarned, though, that peppers and onions are seperate and cost extra! The menu does not explain this, but a polite inquiry will get you a much better sandwhich. After a bit I got what may indeed be the best cheesesteak in Altoona. Freshly sauteed peppers and onions on chopped steak covered with melted cheese. If I go back, though, I will order ahead, it seemed to be the way to go.

I was not warned about the extremely large portions of food so ordered a slice of Sicilian pizza which was about the size of a small cake. I also ordered angel hair pasta and a meatball (which was the size of a baseball) as well as a chicken salad, Pittsburgh-style with fries on it. Everything was good, especially the service. Mama's seems to be geared more to locals but I still had a great meal and everyone was super friendly. There is another place I love to eat at nearby or I would have come back for another meal. The meats and cheeses are boars head brand, sliced fresh and the sub comes loaded. The roll is a nice dense loaf. The hot peppers add a great kick! We both only ate half of our subs and had leftovers for dinner. They have various other hot & cold subs that we'll try on future visits. The service was helpful and super friendly. They were busy so it took probably 15 minutes to complete the process. Overall, it was a great sub and a welcomed change from the usual chain offerings. My only gripe is there's no in-store seating.
