Have been a couple times to Suba's and it was fine. Desserts are what I hear about there tho. I was really disappointed in how they handled a recent visit when we stopped for a dessert. It was 1/2 hr or slightly less from their closing time, and they refused to seat us. There were lots of empty tables and the desserts we wanted were right in the display case. We would have selected them ourselves and seated ourselves and been long gone before they closed. I tried to reason with the owner..... but no dice. Really turned me off to the customer service. Suba's has been my favorite restaurant since our first time there on our first anniversary. We love the atmosphere, the staff are always nice, we are always treated very well, the food is PHENOMENAL. We make the drive up from Wilkesboro, NC just for Suba's sometimes. It's a small dining area, so reservations are highly recommended. Went last night for the first time ever and let me tell you. The service was absolutely amazing and the food was also really good. I got a reservation for 8pm, and despite them closing in 30 minutes. our waitress was super sweet and helped give recommendations. The owner is also a doll. The restaurant is so beautifully decorated and had a comforting atmosphere to it. I ordered the Ribeye steak medium rare with their soup of the day and fettuccine alfredo, and it was all the best food I've ever had since moving to Tennessee 5 years ago. I would like to personally thank the owners and staff for going above and beyond with their business. I am from the Boston area, and now reside in Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, ME. My parents retired in Mountain City, Tennessee. My mother passed away about 8 years ago, but my father insisted on staying there. He got sick a couple weeks ago and ended up in the hospital, so I decided I would fly back to see what was going on with him. I have a few good friends in the area, and they went above and beyond offering to help me in whatever I needed. So I wanted to take them out to treat them to a special meal. The first night after I made sure my father was all good, we went to a bbq restaurant and I went to pay and they had already beat me to it. I was bummed out because I wanted to do something special for them. The last night I was there, we desided to go to your restaurant, as I heard many amazing things about it. My friends called and you had told them that you were booked solid and had no tables left that night. After they called and told me, I said "give me one second, I'll call you back." I called and spoke to one of your staff, and explained the situation that my father was sick and I had flown all the way there and wanted to treat my friends for helping me so much and that your restaurant I had heard amazing things about. I have dined in some of the best restaurants on this earth, and I really wanted to bring them to yours. Whoever I spoke to on the phone was SO gracious, and they immediately said no problem they could fit us in. I offered to make sure we were done at a certain time so that they could accommodate us. (I didn't drop names or titles or anything, I was just kind and they were so amazingly helpful and sympathetic to my situation.) When I called my friends and told them we were all set and I had a table for us they were shocked and delighted! The service was incredible, the food delectable, the deserts sinful......even though we didn't have the room for them, but I was absolutely impressed by the quality of service, and the kindness that they showed to all of their guests. Our food took a bit to come out and I was worried about taking up one of their tables as I had promised to be done at a certain time, however the server told us that there was a cancellation and that we needn't rush in the least. Bravo to the owners and staff of this true gem in the middle of nowhere. I was beyond impressed with the whole experience, and shocked that this level of casual, comfortable, fine dining was here in Mt. City. And thank you to our server, and the owners for a job well done. The best thing about exploring is finding a new restaurant to visit. Mountain City is a mini Boone. It's neat and clean and sort of quiet. However, it doesn't suffer from a lack of good places to eat. Today, we went past Suba's so...in we went. It's a delightfully neat, clean and cute little restaurant which has been in business for 23 years. The owners have got it absolutely right, to the extent that you could plonk this little bistro in any city in the country and it would be a hit. The decor is pleasant, the tables are large and the chairs are comfortable. The staff is brilliant! Everyone was happy, friendly, busy and charming. The waiters are dressed properly...not a t-shirt or ripped pair of jeans in sight. Our waitress Kayla was an absolute delight. To the food. I ordered an Asian Chicken Finger Salad. It was a plate full of the best food I have had in a long while. My wife ordered crawfish cakes and pronounced them 'fabulous' along with a side of mashed spuds and gravy, and asparagus. The deserts, all made on the premises by the Charleston trained pastry cook, looked unbelievable. But we were full. We will definitely be back! read more

The only suggestion is they need to go to online reservations. When staff is busy (always) the phone may not be answered for a minUte or two. There are lunch "seatings" (11am, noontime and 1pm). Suba's is probably the best restaurant in Mountain City today. Their menu is huge and almost overwhelming in its variety. There's something offered for everyone's taste. I got a craisin salad - the lettuce was very fresh with plenty of feta, pecans, and craisins, and portion was average. My friend got salmon quesadilla which was somewhat small in size but was prepared well and included a dill sauce. In observing the diners around us, everyone was enjoying their food. But be warned - save room for dessert. The portion sizes on most of them are very generous and some can easily serve 2-4 people (I'm talking about the coconut eclair!). Desserts are made in house by one of the owners and they are scrumptious. The staff was very friendly and helpful even during the lunch rush. Note that they are not open every day, and they close mid-afternoon between lunch and dinner. If you're in the Mountain City area, make time to go to Suba's. Reservations are recommended, especially during the busier seasons. read more

First and foremost, reservations are a must. Our table of four was on a chicken kick evidently. From Saltimboca to Piccata, to Veg stir fry with chicken and Cordon Bleu. All were amazing! Fresh, well prepared, delicious sauces and sides. The service was timely and courteous. The deserts were to die for. Our table tried the Makers Mark bread pudding which was warmed to the correct temperature and the chocolate eclair that had the best filling and of course topping. He said the prices were a little high as did a local shop owner, but I found them very reasonable. I guess it's what you are used to paying.
