I got married over labor day weekend of 2011, and have been thinking since then how to best convey the amazing job that Ryan & Spencer at Style Matters did for our wedding. Music is such an integral piece of a successful party - and I cannot imagine anyone doing better than Ryan did for our wedding. Simply amazing. I knew from the get-go that Style Matters was going to be a great fit, after looking through their website and our initial meeting with Spencer. He was professional, friendly, and very upfront about the style they go for. This was summed up when I told him the only songs we considered "off limits" would be something like the Hokey Pokey or Chicken Dance, to which he replied: "Well if you wanted that, we're probably not the right people for you." These guys have taste, talent, and personality. We met with Ryan a couple weeks before the big day to go over a great questionnaire they put together before the event. Ryan was a very personable, friendly, and enthusiastic guy. We bounced ideas off of each other, and I felt great about the direction we were heading. A lot of what we did at our wedding was very non-traditional, and Ryan had great offbeat ideas of his own that we were sure to use. The event itself went off WITHOUT A HITCH. He had both families up and dancing the entire night, breaking only for water. Any time the dance floor got even slightly emptier, Ryan found the perfect song to bring everyone back. This is a true talent that can't be stressed enough. Family and friends are still raving about the great job he did. It was a perfect mix of our own requests and songs that we hadn't even thought of. I'm still hoping to get a copy of the playlist if he still has it! Truly, 5 stars is not enough for these guys. I can only speak to the great work Ryan did, but based on these other reviews and our meeting with Spencer, I have no doubt everyone in their lineup is of the highest quality. I'll start by saying I have never written a review on yelp, but Style Matters deserves one so here I go! My Wedding was this past Saturday and John had my guests dancing and smiling until Midnight. John met with us prior, heard what we wanted, and executed flawlessly. He arrived early, looked spiffy, and was very courteous and professional. He knew our main goal was to have everyone dancing all night long, and EVERYONE was. Guests we've never seen dance before felt the energy and had the best time. I don't think anyone even tried to request a song, as they had no need to, every song was awesome. Style Matters/Spencer was extremely easy going, responsive, and professional. husband and i have been to and in enough weddings to conclude the following: shitty dj = shitty reception. reception-attendees begrudgingly participating in "the chicken dance" does not a party make. therefore, we began our wedding-dj search with one primary criterion: act as the catalyst for an amazing party. the search started and ended with style matters. following our initial meeting with spencer, we felt confident he understood our event vision and could deliver - and deliver he did. spencer hooked us up with nate manic (i've dubbed him nate the great and no doubt, you will do the same). to say, "nate was phenomenal" would be a severe understatement. he kept it mellow and smooth during dinner without being boring or cliche, and once he got the party going he *got it going*. EVERYONE was dancing. friends? check! parents? check! eighty-something-year-old great uncle? check! husband and his brother danced so much you would've thought they were competing in a wet-t-shirt contest. at the night's end, reception attendees were begging for the party to go on and "this is the best reception i've ever been to" was overheard in more than one conversation. i've since had multiple inquiries about "the dj" from my engaged friends. husband and i could not be happier with the way in which our reception went down and we owe so much of it to nate. highly recommend! read more

My company catered a wedding at Salvage One last Saturday night. The DJ was Noah from Style Matters...the guy was great ! I have been in the business over 25 years...I have seen many bad bands and djs...Noah really knew what he was doing. He got the people up and dancing...knew when to slow it down a little bit. Also helped with the toasts and speeches,,,etc.... As a fellow vendor he was great to work with...on an event we all need to become a team and we did. Hey I just got done throwing my daughter her 12th birthday party and my DJ was superb . Max Abstract arrived exactly on time set up ,and the music flowed seamlessly and really helped my shy daughter and mostly all girl party relax and boogie . ..... His set list included Lady GaGa , Usher and some delectable great oldies that never lose their appeal like Sly and the Family stone etc ... He was totally responsive to our request for a Happy Birthday song that would not mortify her in front of her friends /classmates . You have to walk a fine line when throwing a tweener party . A tween party is challenging to execute because games are out of the question at this age and music is such a big part of their lives .Even my husband danced . The blending and selection complimented the experience of being in a pretend disco . Max made me calm down when the party began and even when we forgot the candles for the cake his music was the saving grace . If you want a great wedding that people will truly remember start with a great DJ. I would say that the music comes before all else at a wedding-it truly sets the tone, mood and atmosphere for your guests. I didn't have flowers at my wedding or party favors or any of the other little stuff because I wanted to put that money towards an exceptional DJ--knowing all along that people would remember and compliment the music and sound quality over some fancy table arrangements. I cannot tell you how many people complimented us on the music at our wedding and this was a truly diverese crowd of races and ages. Spencer was so easy to work with and a great communicater (very key when you are planning a wedding. You don't want to be tracking people down.) Also, a really important note: it is not just the music that matters but the sound quality and our sound quality was AMAZING! From the ceremony to the toasts to the music everything sounded crystal clear. Spencer played a lot of songs we asked for and threw in a good mix of the choices he thought we would like and he was ON POINT! He played the original to C.R.E.A.M during dinner and some others that we never heard but he so clearly knew our tastes that he knew we would love it. One last thing to mention--he can record your whole night for you from the ceremony, to the toasts, to the dancing and I highly reccommend paying the 200 bucks for the copy of the CD. We almost did not get it thinking we really didn't need a recording of the night if there was a photographer but I am so so so glad we did. I really cannot remember my husbands vows to me (I am sure they were amazing) but my feet were killing me and I was so nervous that I could not concentrate. There's a reason every review on Style Matters is 5 stars. From the planning all the way to the wedding, Spencer (the owner) was great to work with and you can tell from the first meeting that he genuinely cares about your event and wants to make it better than even you think it can be. Honestly, even if you're dead set on having a band at your wedding, which i was in the early planning stages, unless youre hiring snoop dogg or the surving members of the beatles, I guarantee you'd be happier with Style Matters. Spencer knows what he's doing in all facets of the business. After he basically created our timeline and told us straight out what works and what doesnt work, (which is more helpful than you can ever imagine when planning a wedding) he absolutely blew us away the day of. He traveled all the way up to middle wisconsin; he set up our sound for the pastor and live music at our ceremony (which was outside on a lakefront); his cocktail hour and dinner music sets were phenomenal - seriously, people complimented me on how great the dinner music was more than the dinner itself, which was actually really good too; he kept us on schedule and mc'd all the traditional BS; and i don't know where to start with the dance portion. Simply put, it was exactly what you want at any event that involves dancing and having fun, no matter who or what your crowd is. The dance floor was packed the entire night. He knew exactly what to play, when to play it, and it was all seamlessly mixed together. The guests, including my 92 year grandmother, could not stop telling me how great the music and DJ were and I couldnt have agreed more. We recently hired Style Matters DJs for our wedding at the end of April and couldn't be happier with the experience. When we first asked Spencer if any of his crew would be willing to travel to rural North Carolina to DJ, we weren't sure it would even be possible, so were grateful that they were enthusiastic right from the start. Based on our music interests (and strong disinterests) he paired us up with Max, who traveled down with his wife, and absolutely dominated the decks all night. The reception was in my wife's parents' backyard so there were few restrictions, and Max took full advantage. He took our music list, which I was a bit nervous about the "danceability" of, and turned it into as close to a late-night music festival set as most attendees would ever experience. The dance floor was packed with drunk uncles, hippy aunts, emotional moms, good 'ole boys, hipster-indie-jam rock-techno heads, even small children hoisted on shoulders. I actually felt bad for Max having to watch the party from the booth, but at least his wife was able to join the fun. The worst part of the night was the inevitable end and having no other late, late night sets to stumble over to. And, perhaps most importantly, my strict request of no Mumford and Sons (among many others) was honored all evening... read more

Spencer was awesome! We e-mailed him to see if he was available for our wedding and he e-mailed back like three minutes later, and that was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. We sat down to meet and see if it was a good fit, and as we were leaving the building I said "Want to just use him?" and my fiance said "Definitely." Spencer has an amazing ability to read the crowd like nothing either of us has ever seen before. Literally everyone from our friends, to our grandparents, to the father of the bride (who NEVER dances) was on the floor the entire night! Style Matters is the best way to find a great DJ! We met with Spencer trying to find a DJ for our wedding. He could not have been nicer to us and even gave us a free CD with some sample tracks! Spencer matched us up with Noah Casser (aka Weaponry). He was the best. He was totally relaxed, came through with great music suggestions for our cake cutting, and got to know us well enough to play music that really matched our style. The microphone for the ceremony worked perfectly as well. We have had multiple guests (most surprisingly my Mom's middle-aged friends) tell us after our wedding that they had danced more on our wedding night than they had in years. We had our wedding on April 23rd @ Galleria Marchetti. We used Style Matters because we saw good reviews and had a nice meeting with Spencer the owner. Our DJ was Max. He met with us and listened to our requests and added some ideas of his own. He was very personable. Max arrived early and had everything prepared. Everyone seemed to love his song choices and tempo. Having seen more than a few cheesy DJs in our day, we were hoping that our DJ would be anything but cheesy and would make a great evening for all our wedding guests. They are exceptional DJs that understand and cater to their clients Professionalism In working with both the owner (Spencer) and our DJ, we were more than pleased with their professionalism. They are prompt in responding to e-mails, cover all necessary information and follow through on what they promise. They are proactive in reaching out to you as your big day approaches (to assign your DJ and to finalize details) and in contacting you to make you aware of events that showcase their talent. Great DJs Noah, our DJ, was fantastic. He has great presence and is client focused. After being matched with Noah, he sent us a friendly intro e-mail along with a few questions to help us organize our thoughts around music for our wedding. During our meeting, he walked through the questions with us and helped advise us on our timeline of events. We wanted to incorporate a dance set before dinner was served and he found the perfect spot for it. His experience with and understanding of the mechanics of weddings was clear. Noah was very flexible with changes in the agenda as well - the night of the wedding, our fathers both decided that they wanted to speak (after previously saying no) and Noah accommodated by incorporating the toasts perfectly. As for the music - Noah was AWESOME! He interpreted our styles and read the crowd perfectly and had people on the dance floor ALL NIGHT! We've gotten tons of compliments on the structure of our dance sets (per Noah's suggestion) and the music. Our friends all want to know who we used so they can book the same DJ. We used Style Matters for our Surprise Wedding on November 4, 2011 and they were absolutely AMAZING. Spencer was professional and thoughtful when picking the most appropriate DJ for us and extremely helpful with ideas regarding all other aspects of the event as well. As a surprise wedding, none of or guests knew what was taking place, they thought it was a birthday party, and thus our DJ was hiding for the first hour behind a false wall and was an integral piece of our massive reveal! Our DJ was Weaponry and we cannot recommend him enough. We met with him before the event to go over our taste and he got completely listened and became our human Pandora, mixing things we mentioned and things that went with that for the cocktail hour and reception. We booked Style Matters for our wedding with Ovation, and man, our DJ Ryan N crushed it. Ryan did more than just "DJ" and lineup a solid playlist - he helped us plan the night, move along each part of the evening, and took the time to get to know us. Ryan blended different music to keep multiple generations dancing all night, he helped us create a flow and order for the wedding speeches, and is quite good at reading the crowd/guests to know when to speed up a portion of the night, or let it ride. I had an awesome time at my wedding, that is the highest praise that I can give to Spencer and Style Matters. I am a hard sell, I get stuck in my head easily and I let myself ruin my own good time. However working with Spencer on all of the musical aspects of my wedding was very comfortable and easy. I have been raving about Spencer's DJ set at our wedding since we left the dance floor at midnight this past Saturday. We had an American/Persian wedding, and he did not miss a beat between the different styles of music, and everyone I spoke to was impressed with the music. The selection of tunes was diverse throughout the night, but from the first song played through the last, everything fit perfectly. For the last hour of the reception, things got serious on the dance floor, I am a bit fuzzy on the exact songs played, but it was just absolute killer dance/party music. He could have played three more hours past midnight and I'm convinced no one would have left. As their website says, there are a lot of wedding DJ's out there and a lot of them try and sell you on the cheesy lights, effects, etc. If you want a true professional that will absolutely rock your wedding and leave people blown away by your DJ's talent, go with Style Matters. Style Matters exceeded our expectations for our October '17 wedding reception. They're definitely pricier than many other DJs in the Chicago-land area but they are 100% worth it. We met Spencer during our DJ searching and he explained their process -- they'll send you a questionnaire to get a feel of the couple, the guests, and your music tastes. My now-spouse and I are huge into music, both playing and listening, and frankly we can be quite opinionated about music, so finding the right DJ was really one of the most important things to us! Spencer paired us with Dustin. We met Dustin a few weeks before our wedding and we knew we were in good hands. I can't speak highly enough of Dustin! He was professional, super friendly and organized. We were also excited that Dustin shared some common musical interests with us too -- it was evident that Spencer took some care into picking the right DJ for us. The dance floor was never empty. We were pleased to hear some of our own song picks throughout the night, so again it's important that you put time into your questionnaire. Our wedding reception was about 225 and we honestly have received dozens of compliments on the music. We also loved hearing some of DJ Dustin's creativity and skill come through during between-song mixing -- such a treat. He's seriously the best. We couldn't be happier with our DJ. I can not say enough good things about this DJ company!!! We first heard about Style Matters through a friend who had recently attended a wedding with Style Matters. We wanted to do our due diligence and make sure we researched as many companies as possible before we made a decision. As we started to research, we were noticing that the obvious choice was Style Matters. They hands down have the most positive reviews of all the DJ's out there and we quickly knew this was who we wanted for our wedding. After our initial meeting with Spencer, we knew there was no doubt in our minds that we wanted to hire Style Matters for our December. And we could not have made a better choice! We had so many questions and Spencer answered every single one of them and made us feel so at ease and even more confident about our decision. We told us that he would be meeting with his DJ's and would be pairing us with someone he thought would fit bets with what we were looking for. He helped us plan out our day and find our fabulous DJ Max. I have never seen my family and friends dance the night night away as they did at the wedding. As mother of the bride, I called Spencer after reading other reviews on Yelp. As soon as my daughter met him, she said.. that's it, we don't have to call anyone else. The wedding was on 4/24/10 at Galleria Marchetti. We used String Theory for the ceremony and the music was beautiful. Then Spencer worked his magic. He is fabulous. His manner is very professional and unobtrusive. The evening ran so smoothly. When the dancing started... it literally never stopped. Everyone had SO MUCH FUN! Everyone danced.. young and old. Our guests told us afterwards that is was the most fun wedding that they had ever been to. We would used Spencer again in a heart beat. I decided to use Style Matters DJ because of the great reviews on Yelp, and they were correct. For my wedding we had Tom Federick of Style matters and he was great. A few weeks before the wedding he came to our house and made us feel so at ease. He noted the demographics of the wedding, asked us our opinions on slow songs, party songs, etc. as well as if we had any needs or certain expectations. He was a great MC as well as a DJ. There was never a time that people were not on the dance floor! The best pictures and some of the best memories took place on the dance floor and they honestly wouldn't have been the way they were with out his fabulous DJ skills. He is so passionate about what he does and it really seemed he took an interest in my fiance and I, and incorporated that into his selection. One thing I really liked was if he did play a song that people weren't very into, he would just transition it out and before you knew it the dance floor was rocking again. In his credit I will also add that the dancing is possibly the most talked about thing at my wedding and I think that also can tell you how great he was. I would definitely refer Style Matters to any one looking for a DJ for a wedding, party, etc. They have top of the line equipment (my dad is an audiophile so he was very happy about that!), great personalities, and were very professional. We could not have been happier having Style Matters DJ our wedding. After all was said and done, I realized that the DJ was one of the most important choices we had made for our wedding, and we definitely made the right call. Margot was our DJ for our 9/15 wedding. She was everything you would want in a DJ.. She was friendly, professional, well organized, and most importantly had a fantastic taste in music. She called my wife and I prior to the event and had us go through a checklist that she had put together that would structure how the event would take place. Again, I need to say how well organized she was! The day of the event Margot showed up super early and had everything set up both inside and outside by the time we arrived at the venue. Our wedding ceremony took place outside at the same location as the reception (Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club). Margot played music outside for both our ceremony and the cocktail hour that followed. Everything for the ceremony was right on que and went perfect. She then switched to a nice soft blend of music for the cocktail hour that all the guests seemed to enjoy. While lining up inside for the wedding party introductions, Margot noticed that there were extra people lined up then what we had listed on the pre -wedding checklist. She quickly got their names and adjust her intros. NOW THAT IS ATTENTION TO DETAIL! Throughout the night, Margot's awesomeness continued. She had the music for all the scheduled dances qued and ready to go. At one point in the evening, my wife and I got behind the dance schedule while making our rounds. Margot saved the day and brought it to our attention. She very kindly mentioned that we were falling behind on our first dance, and that our guest were looking eager to get out on the floor. This to me went beyond what I expected out of a DJ. To help us keep schedule and to keep an eye on our guests was just fantastic. As I mentioned in the beginning of this review, Margot has great taste in music. She played everything that we had asked for, any requests from our guests, and then peppered in her own music (we asked her for this). She had everyone on the dance floor and kept them there until the wedding was over. It has been two weeks since the wedding and our friends continue to tell us how much fun they had at our wedding. We had the opportunity to work Style Matters DJ John Simmons the first part of 2016 for our wedding at Ovation. It turned out that we had seen John many times at West Fest here in Chicago, so we were really excited when we found out that Spencer matched us with John for our wedding. John took time out of his weekend to meet with us prior to the event to discuss our music plan and provide constructive feedback on how we can maximize his skills and the dance floor. We have to say he NAILED it. John was able to navigate the evening starting with rock & roll, moving to Motown, then 90s hip-hop, and last and certainly not least some of the music Chicago is notoriously known for - HOUSE! John is very nice, extremely responsive, and has a portfolio of music second to none. THANK YOU DJ JOHN SIMMONS for keeping the dance floor flooded the entire evening. Cannot say enough about our DJ, Dustin, at our wedding in May of 2018 at Ovation. Dustin is not only the nicest guy, but he is sooooooo good at what he does. The moment he started playing music, the dance floor was packed, and stayed that way until the end of the night. Dustin not only helped direct the flow of the wedding, putting us at ease throughout the day, but cut songs perfectly for things that required timing, like when the bridal party was walking down the aisle, or shortening the length of songs for first dances. Music is of the utmost importance to my spouse and me. When we were planning, we had high hopes for the music and dancing aspects of our wedding. At first we were sure we were going with a different company. I'm so glad we went with Style Matters instead. Working with Spencer was a pleasure from beginning to end. When you see the space he has created at Ovation--which we had the pleasure of experiencing twice as we planned for the event--it is clear that he is a person with vision. Spencer's responses were prompt and he interacted with us in a friendly, professional way--whether in person or through email. Jason (DJ Intel) was nothing less than m a g i c a l. Meeting with him in person was great. He put us at ease with his laid back style. Somehow, he looked at our song lists (the must-play, the ones we liked, and the no-play) and knew what else we'd like to hear. Our guests' ages ranged from 1 to 91. And they came from a dozen different cultures and places from coast to coast, were gay and straight, and of vastly different dancing abilities and styles. The dance floor was never empty. Also, there were some tricky spots in the evening, as there always are. The trickiest was the timing of the flashmob. He read my cue for that and for all of the other parts of the night that required good timing. His eyes were always up and checking what was happening. For a nervous couple, that was so reassuring. For music there's a big part of my cortex reserved for criticism. I have a degree in music from Northwestern U. Not once during the night did any thought arise from the critical part of my brain. Style Matters did an excellent job at our wedding reception. Spencer was very detail-oriented and easy to work with. He even visited the reception site beforehand to ensure we had enough equipment for the bigger venue. DJs Margot and Tom were amazing! The dance floor was jumping all night, absolutely packed. We have had numerous guests tell us afterwards how fun the night was, and they had never seen so many people dancing and partying through the entire night. Spencer, Margot, and Tom were all very responsive leading up to the event. They provided a number of song suggestions for each traditional dance, and even tweaked the introductions just before the event. We used Style Matters for our July 2011 wedding and couldn't be happier. Spencer was great to work with, and our DJs Tom and Margot were absolutely fantastic. They met with us about a month prior to the wedding to get a feel for what we wanted (and what we didn't want) and they didn't disappoint. They did an absolutely wonderful job reading the crown and kept everyone dancing, no small feat because we had a very diverse group of guests with very diverse musical preferences (and dancing styles). They also did a very nice job with music during the cocktail hour. Everyone we worked with who was associated with Style Matters was professional, courteous, responsive, and attentive. Tom from Style Matter's is officially a member of our family. His ability to bring people together through music is phenomenal. I have only been a part of his work at weddings, but I can imagine any where this man plays music people are dancing and celebrating life. read more
