First off, I'll mention that this is a now husband writing this review, in case that matters. Style Matters was excellent. They handle themselves so professionally, you never feel worried that you're gonna have some lame DJ start show stealing thinking that your wedding is his time to practice standup comedy. From the getgo, Spencer(owner) makes you feel comfortable and goes through your wants/needs in order to assign the best fit DJ. What I really liked about this company is that all of their DJs are professional DJs. They're not some part time weekend guy that happens to have speakers and some vinyl. The other is that they are truly masters of their crafts(or domain)? Definitely worth the price, as they really do help make the night great. He was professional, trustworthy, responsive, caring, friendly, and a creative musical genius. He was quick on his feet too. He mixed song requests on the spot and somehow blended older love songs for our older guests into Latin music and then into 90s and 2000s hip hop to today's top 40. He paid really close attention to what we wanted during our in person meeting. And was able to build off what we requested and added his own twist which we loved. We used Style Matters DJ's for our wedding two weeks ago (in Chicago) and it was the best decision we ever made! Spencer was always professional, extremely quick in responding to us, and incredibly thorough every time we reached out to him in the months leading up to our wedding. And the best part? He matched us up perfectly with Dustin. Literally, perfectly. My husband and I could not have more opposite music tastes and creating our must play list was a struggle. I like top 40's/pop music/90's hip-hop and my husband likes metal/EDM/and straight up beats with no words. Dustin knew exactly how to blend our two styles and he was an amazing DJ. His mash-up's were incredible and our guests danced their faces off. Not to mention, we had a couple traditions we needed to incorporate (like a second line and the hora) and Dustin hatched a genius plan that involved doing the two dances back to back. Our guests are still talking about how cool that was. We had such an amazing time thanks to Dustin and if we ever throw a party like this again, we'd book him in a heartbeat. My husband, Justin M. wrote a thorough review that was posted earlier this evening. He painted a picture of the planning and execution process with Style Matters from start to finish. I also want to share the cliffs notes of my experience. Style Matters saved our wedding reception this past Saturday and I will never forget how they stepped up to the plate when the power went out at our venue. Wait, the power went out? How does that happen?! Have no fear fellow yelpers, DJ Weaponry (Noah) didn't miss a beat. We quickly found the Jawbone Jambox that I had given my then fiancé as a wedding gift. It had charged all day and was ready to carry the dance floor. DJ Weaponry found a perfect mix of crowd pleasers and slow dancing songs for our guests to enjoy in between cocktails. Within an hour of the power going out, DJ Spencer swooped in like a real life super hero with a generator in tow. Along with the "genny" he brought an energy that was electric only to be replicated by our guests on the dance floor. There's no question that the two DJ's took the party to a level it might not have reached had everything gone off without a hitch. Our wedding photographer recommended Spencer, and Style Matters, and we are so happy we took her advice! Spencer was great, right from the start, and took time in matching us with the right DJ. That DJ ended up being Duke, and my fiance and I knew he'd take great care of us. He understood our musical taste, and our desire to avoid certain musical cliches ;) The night of the wedding was everything we'd hoped for. In particular, our cocktail hour and dinner were amazing. Such an interesting process - unfortunately we never got to meet John, and that could have been uncomfortable, but we did have a call with him and it was obvious what a professional he was. I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said. Literally the perfect wedding vendor, responsive to email, fairly priced, delivered what they said they would. What else can you ask for? Duke was an amazing DJ, he listened to what we said we wanted and figured out what we didn't know that we wanted. He went above and beyond to make our day special (we didn't have a choice for entrance song, he emailed us a list with 20 options including why he thought it would be a good choice and a link to a youtube video of the song). The cocktail hour and dinner music was great. He played some of our non-dancy favorites and a bunch of awesome covers that are now favorites. Our dance floor was packed the entire night and he did a wonderful job of playing towards the older crowd during the first half and then pleasing the 20-somethings closer to midnight. Multiple people asked me if they could get the set list. Style Matters also provided sound during the ceremony and instructed our first time officiant on how to use a microphone. Music makes a reception. That's why I highly endorse Spencer Lokken of StyleMattersDjs. He is a unique balance of professional and hip. As a bride, I was worried about finding someone tastefully creative, but who I could rely on and work with easily. Spencer is that professional. As a result, our dealings with him went smoothly. He drew out from us what we were looking for and executed it perfectly. In fact, he even coordinated the music of our emotional ceremony. He handled that pressure-filled job expertly. My wife and I hired Style Matters to work our wedding (10/11/14) and we couldn't have been more pleased. Spencer Lokken is the owner and this year he had a lot on his plate with the opening of their new event space Ovation. Even with the additional stress of running that operation, he was very responsive and attentive to our requests / emails. About a month or so before the wedding (after emailing thru out the summer back and forth ideas / musical tastes), Spencer paired us up with Dustin Harris (http://dustinharris.biz/home.html). What a treat; Dustin is the consummate professional. My wife and I met personally with Dustin a week or so before the reception to review everything. Dustin brought his own ideas while also allowing us to incorporate what was important to us. The day of the wedding, Dustin arrived several hours early and we literally didn't need to do anything with him. What more could you ask for? Our ceremony was on site and that went off without a hitch regarding microphones / music / cues. Our cocktail hour / food serving was on the floor below; Dustin seamlessly made the transition and the music started and continued for the next 3 hours until we needed to switch it back upstairs for the real dancing of the evening. Again, another transition for our DJ and not a second of down time or awkward silence. Dustin stuck to our playlists/ added in some of his own style and listened / watched the flow of the evening very well. Never a dull moment. I would recommend Style Matters to anyone. Duke was the DJ at our wedding last weekend and the music was fabulous. We provided Spencer (Style Matters head) and Duke with a very short list of specific songs and music genres we wanted and they created an amazing play list from that. At some point a guest yelled out "it's an 80's dance party!" From beginning to end guests were on the dance floor. Spencer and Duke were wonderful to work with and they really listen to what your taste in music is. Duke played everything from Stevie Wonder to Daft Punk, and people loved it. To be honest, I was sad when I realized we couldn't afford a band for our restaurant wedding. Let me tell you -- I was so wrong. Keep your feet on the ground and trust that Style Matters can create the type of wedding that all your friends and family are talking about days later ....at a fraction of the cost of a band. I am SO happy we chose to work with Spencer and Style Matters. They promptly answered emails and made us feel confident everything would go off without a hitch. A week before the wedding we met our DJ, Max. Immediately, it felt like he got us. We wanted our wedding to be a true mix of us -- my fiance's Mexican roots, my love of Motown, and both of our desire to have a packed floor with our friends and family singing and dancing all night long. Max far exceeded any vision I had for the wedding. He catered to ALL of our guests -- friends and family from Mexico, Chicago hipsters, kooky family members -- seriously, everyone was just so happy. My fiance and I question if every bride and groom think that their wedding is the best wedding on the face of the planet.... probably; however, I kid you not when I say that days after our wedding friends and family members are still contacting us to tell us how much fun the wedding was and how the music rocked. The coordinator at the restaurant also raved about Max. I can honestly say that this was one of our best "wedding planning" decisions we made. The night ended with our friends in a huge circle singing and dancing together followed by the group chanting "Max, Max, Max, Max...." I am extremely delighted to add Style Matters to the string of 5-star ratings it already has on Yelp. My husband and I were very pleased that Spencer was the DJ for our wedding. What can be better than to have Style Matter's head honcho and owner himself to DJ for us? Spencer is very friendly while maintaining a great sense of professionalism. Our first meeting with him was at his home office and his demeanor made us feel very comfortable in leaving our wedding music into the hands of Spencer. For our first dance, my husband and I did a medley and we asked Spencer if he could put three of the songs into one file for us. Although it did take him awhile to send the music file to us due to his very busy schedule, he did such an amazing job with it. Our final meeting with Spencer took place one week before the wedding and on the evening we were supposed to meet, Spencer quickly informed us that he had to push back our meeting an hour later due to an emergency that came up. He was very apologetic and even offered to come to our house to meet us. My husband and I already made dinner plans that night at a restaurant with my family and we asked Spencer to come meet us at the restaurant and we would chat at the bar area of the restaurant. We went over our wedding day schedule and details with Spencer and despite his busy schedule, he made sure he covered everything he needed to know about our wedding reception. We had a daytime reception and Spencer was awesome. I was a little worried about how the crowd would react to daytime dancing and the dance floor was never empty. It's true when people say that time flies when you're having fun because before I knew it, we had to play our last song before our bridal party took off for a photo shoot after the end of the reception. I only wished we had more time for dancing! Everything went by in a flash! If you don't like and don't want cheesy songs for your wedding, I'd recommend Style Matters in a heartbeat. They represent contemporary music tastes. Spencer has a busy schedule but he was always extremely responsive to our emails. And hey, busy is good, right? Busy means everyone else also wants him to be their DJ. Just make sure you get in touch with him early so you can work out scheduling a meeting. He's awesome! read more

My wife and I had Duke Shin from Style Matters DJ our wedding (ceremony & reception), and we would highly recommend both Duke and Style Matters to anyone looking to throw a good party in the Chicago area. The company was both easy to work with and professional, clearly showing their experience in both special events and weddings. Even though we were pretty-much sold from the first meeting with Spencer, the best part was that we could "try before you buy" as the company put together a happy hour event showcasing all of their DJs to [potential] clients. This event allowed us to see what style each DJ brought to the table within a "party" atmosphere, and was how we eventually got paired with Duke Shin. After we were matched, Duke invited us to meet up over food/beverage to just talk and get to know us - this made the difference in us feeling comfortable with Duke as an MC, DJ, and essentially a wedding guest. The party itself was awesome, of course not only because of the DJ, but definitely assisted by proper music. When it came to our reception, we felt Duke was great at reading the crowd and adjusting the music accordingly. The background music during dinner was a perfect mixture of songs we requested specifically, and other tracks we did not think of but loved. When the dance floor opened, it remained packed until the end. All of our friends gave us compliments on the party, and said it was one of the most fun weddings they had ever been to. My husband and I used Style Matters for our wedding in South Bend, Indiana on August 3rd. From the beginning it was a very pleasant and professional experience. Spencer met with us to get to know our music preference and style, as well as the type of wedding we were planning in order to pair us up with the best DJ for our needs. Our DJ, Dustin, was absolutely the perfect choice for our wedding. We had a a wide range of ages in our guests and the dance floor was full the entire time. We received countless compliments from guests about the music. Dustin was very engaged with us from the minute we met with him in Chicago to go over some of our music preferences and was reliable through the entire process. He was awesome at reading the crowd and knowing just what to play. He was great at all of the announcements and MC duties, and stuck to just playing music once dancing began. It's clear that all of the DJs at Style Matters are talented professionals in the music business and are not your typical wedding DJ. They also offer an MP3 recording of the reception music which is a unique and fun thing to be able to listen to in the future. We highly recommend Style Matters and Dustin! Style Matters also offers a trio (String Theory) that is great for cocktail hour and the ceremony. We used them for our church ceremony and outdoor cocktail hour and they were perfect. From our initial meeting with Spencer to our reception on 12/14/13, Style Matters provided a fun, unique atmosphere for our wedding reception. Before signing our contract, we met with Spencer and he told us what set apart Style Matters apart from other wedding DJs. They try not to play the typical wedding music, but create a set list that represents the bride and groom. He asked us to provide a list of must-play songs, do-not-play songs, and then give a list of songs that we're listening to now. He was very down to earth and definitely convinced us that with Style Matters, their DJs would create a set list that represented our tastes. About a month before the wedding, Spencer put us in touch with a DJ who he felt had similar tastes to us. We ended up working Noah and he was awesome. He MC'ed the reception, but did not make himself the star of the show as I have seen some DJs do at other weddings. He did a great job at playing music that all our guests loved. We had guests of all ages, but he worked the crowd and kept people on the dance floor all night. Our guests all raved about him after the reception. We cannot recommend Style Matters and our DJ, Duke, enough. After meeting with the owner, Spencer, we were provided with a lengthy questionnaire about the music we enjoy, the concerts we've attended together, the atmosphere we were trying to create, specific songs that wanted played, songs and genres we would like to hear throughout the evening, and a very important "do not play" list. With the interview and completed questionnaire in hand, Spencer paired us with Duke, who also scheduled a meeting with us to nail down specifics of the evening. The results were perfect. Not only were we personally thrilled with the music at every stage of the evening--ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing--but our guests were enthusiastically complimentary of the music. Several people specifically praised Duke, and one guest tipped him on the spot because of his great work. Duke accepted everyone's praise humbly and seemed genuinely appreciative that people like his work so much. A few guests had their Shazam apps at the ready all night long to capture the songs and artists Duke was putting out. Though we provided Duke with a list of many songs we wanted to hear, he was able to weave them - and those he picked out - together smoothly and perfectly to create a cohesive soundscape for our wedding. One of the many examples of how good and quick-thinking Duke was -- one of our 'Best People' mentioned a singer in his dinner toast, and as soon as the speeches were over, Duke played a great dinner-compatible version of one of the singer's songs. Simply put, Duke and Spencer will listen to all of your desires and concerns, and in turn put together a great evening of music. read more

Max kept our guests on the dance floor all night! My goal of dancing the night away at my wedding happened thanks to Max--this comes with a small regret that I didn't take more photos with guests or eat the late night bites, but the dance floor was too lit! All of our guests were impressed, and our moms were very pleased as music was a higher priority for them. Plus he did a great job introducing/pronouncing our bridal party with complicated names. Style Matters has DJ'd many of our friend's weddings...and after years of memories from their weddings, we knew that's what we wanted as well--our family and friends to remember the night with us, great company and great music. Spencer (owner) was great when we met with him and after spending a short time with us, knew we would be a good fit with one of his best, Dustin. Dustin was everything we could ask for, he was open to listening to our taste in music and was really just a cool, kind person. After being to several weddings with DJ's from Style Matters, we knew that they had a unique take on wedding dj-ing, whereas they are constantly listening to the beats and rhythms of different tracks and blending the music into each other to create seamless transitions into the next song. We provided Dustin with a list of different music that we liked and had a couple 'must-have,' but really wanted to provide him the opportunity to be creative and do what he loves doing. And he didn't disappoint us at all. We loved every single minute of the reception, especially the dancing. From the moment the dancing begun, he got us going...and the dance floor was literally overflowing! Can't really ask for much more than that! He always had a smile on his face, worked well with our guests, and most importantly, provided the kind of set we really had hoped for. I wish we could relive that night over and over. After interviewing several DJs in the Chicago area with positive reviews on Yelp, my fiance (now wife) and I hired Spencer from Style Matters based on good rapport at our initial interview and over the course of ensuing correspondence. We are so glad we did. First, the primary role of the DJ for us, and I assume many, is so that you can hand off the responsibility for providing music to someone else and just enjoy the event. We did not want to have a passive ipod playlist, nor did we want a boilerplate DJ (fast song-slow song-oldie-line dance, rinse, repeat). Spencer's musical catalog and past experience made for appropriate music during each phase of our event (pre-ceremony, ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, dancing). Additionally, once the dancefloor was opened, the value of SyleMatters' equipment became clear, as it allows the DJ to physically spin together music on vinyl discs just like in the club (meanwhile the vinyl is synced to a computerized library which cuts out the need for the DJ to fish around in the dark for the next disc). When Spencer described this system during our initial interview, it sounded cool and stuck out because no other DJ company we spoke with had the technology. By the end of our reception, its role in helping to create a true dance party atmosphere was clear. The secondary role of our DJ was to serve as emcee of the proceedings, and in this he did a great job as well. Prior to the event, he made sure to have a workable itinerary of how we wanted the night to go, what should happen when, who was to be introduced, and how to pronounce their names. He was present and made necessary announcements but was tactful and only as vocal as he needed to be. Spencer was even kind enough incorporate a custom Mp3 we had made into the proceedings. The third and final role was one we had not foreseen but one that in retrospect was a huge help to us in both our reception being a success, and in allowing us to enjoy it. Spencer effectively served as a day-of person from when he arrived shortly before the ceremony until he packed up his gear after last call. Over the course of trying to mingle with guests and accept congratulations, it would have been impossible for us to execute our planned itinerary without a third party subtly getting our attention to say "we need to make the announcement about X now if we are going to do Y in an hour..." and then helping us facilitate whatever needed to happen. Based on the first two roles, we felt that we had already gotten our money's worth as far as a DJ was concerned. By filling this third role which we had not even anticipated prior to the day-of, Spencer went above and beyond and further added value to our experience. For a successful party/wedding/event, both in terms of musical experience and logistical streamlining, I cannot recommend Spencer and Style Matters DJs highly enough. My only hope is that going forward, more of the weddings my wife and I attend in the Chicago area will have a Style Matters DJ running the show! read more

Spencer at Style Matters gets it. He understands what people want, and whats needed in a wedding. We met with him to discuss being our DJ for the wedding and right from the start you could tell this was a cool dude. The meeting went great, and if you want great music with a little hipster feel, these are the guys for you! Pros: - Execution and style (I fully believe had we booked with Style Matters that our music would've been killer.) - Price (For what your getting, the price just cant be beat. They are very competitive.) - DJ Selection (The DJ isn't selected for you, you get to pick! But if you need some guidance, Spencer is there.) Cons: - Ethnic Music (Now we didn't give Spencer and the team at style matters the chance to prove they could do it, but we just didn't feel like they'd be able to pull it off. When hiring a vendor, you want an expert that will take care of that part of the wedding to make your day is stress free, and we weren't sure that Style Matters could play the right Croatian and Greek songs without us overlooking every single detail and having multiple meetings.) That being said, if we were having a wedding with no ethnicity, they would hands down be the vendor I would choose. I knew what I did not want in a DJ - cheesy introductions, any music that came with choreography, or a loudmouth who made the night about them. Beyond that, I really just wanted someone with a great ear for music and eye for a crowd. Dustin was the perfect choice for us. He's a really nice guy and very friendly to work with leading up to the wedding. He was super receptive to our ideas and preferences and never made me feel back for liking terrible pop music. On the big day Dustin talked when he needed to, kept the dance tunes flowing, and was never intrusive. Also, Spencer made everything super easy on the business end, so that was nice! I've already recommended Style Matters to a few friends getting married in Chicago, I decided I probably should get off my lazy bum and recommend them on Yelp! read more
