Sturgeon's Mill, is one of the world's last steam-powered sawmills that still uses its original equipment. The mill was founded in 1914 and has been restored, it's an authentic time capsule of a late 19th and early 20th century sawmill. This is a dream spot for historians, gear heads, steam heads, students of California history, and, of course, photographers. They offer guided tours or you can wander on your own. Admission is free, donations are welcome. The mill is run by dedicated volunteers, the day I went I think the youngest was 9 and the oldest over 80. Check the website for important information before going to the amazing living museum. There is more to see here. Starting in 1924 Woodland garden was added to the site, restoration begun in 2009. Two of the ponds are still here and so is the corkscrew redwood tree. You will be able to see many specimen plants They also serve reasonable priced food in an area what can seat 200 people.

I saw an old episode of Calif. Gold where Huell Howser went to Sturgeon's Mill and went to their website to find out when they had public tours. The dates for FREE Public Tours (Donations accepted) for 2013 are: Sat 5/18/13 & Sun 5/19/13; June 15 & 16; Sept 14 & 15; Oct 12 & 13 from 10am-3pm. For 2013 they are celebrating their 100th Anniversary. You can get a Self Guided Tour Map & walk around during the public tour dates. These are the things you can see: Museum - it's tiny. Only takes maybe 10-15 min to see it. Williamette yarder/donkey Entrance to boiler & engines - ancient steam engines is Cool! Sturgeon's Creek Sawdust Burner - just look inside, meh Picnic Area - tables you can bring your lunch & eat. Think they sell like chips, saw popcorn for sale near entrance 75c, free water from large cooler. Original office - small with old typewriters, check book, invoice, etc. Log deck & carriage viewing platform - nice to see them working Main saw & head rig viewing platform - pretty interesting, I took lots of pictures & videos. Blacksmith shop - small, saw guy working Log Deck - bunch of logs Edger & Matcher viewing platform - neat to see Planer - pretty neat to see them trimming wood We walked around the Woodland Gardens - still a work in progress. You can see the Dawn Redwood Trees & Corkscrew Tree. Portable bathrooms available. Worth a drive up to see it on Public Tour Days! Website: www.sturgeonsmill.org

Great Father's Day weekend run. So happy to see multiple generations of families touring the mill.

For starters, this place is rather difficult to find. The turnoff sign is quite inconspicuous . Patty, the tour guide spoke about the history and her Peruvian partner's substantial impact on the business. She led us down the road to see the chickens, pigs, and goats and encouraged us to peek through the window of the factory, though it was close to the public because it had to stay sanitized. Not as educational as I had hoped Despite being an unusually warm day Patty insisted we do the cheese tasting outside. We tried 5 different types, and oddly I preferred the cows milk cheese despite her specialty being goats milk. I also wasn't enthused about having the tasting on an unstable picnic table surrounded by an endless number of flies we struggled to fight off, and the cheese was steadily melting. Not what I pictured for a cheese tasting. With some additional resources this place could be spectacular.

She only…read morechecked prices after the fact and decided to decrease her costs (with a witness) without even asking me. Then she wouldn't pay me and blackmailed me to sign a false receipt! She then rented my goats to another person without informing them of the cost. She thereby involved an innocent party in her scheme, again without asking me if moving my goats to another party's land was OK with me. My goats are my babies. I need to know where they are at all times. She claimed, after the fact, that I should have been driving a fair distance every other day to check on them. This was not part of our original deal. Besides, Patty OWNS A GOAT FARM AND SHOULD KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF GOATS! Patty advertises herself as a goat farmer, but she doesn't even have any of her own goats! This woman and her farm are a run-down fake. Patty is quite elderly and suffers from severe memory loss. She is not even able to walk into her pastures due to physical issues. Don't go there. You will be disappointed in the lack of authenticity. This goat farm is a definite has-been and suffers from deferred maintenance, an owner who can't remember anything, and junk strewn everywhere.

This was such an incredible and memorable experience! We saw 17 wild cats on our tour, which included cheetahs, clouded leopard, black leopard, sand cat, bobcat, and so much more! I loved that they had a good mix of large and small wild cats. The tours are by reservation only and you can reach out to schedule a tour. They keep group sizes to no more than 8 people as to not overwhelm the wild cats. The tour was extremely informative and you will learn a lot about these incredible animals. Their facility is super clean and they love and care deeply about these wild cats. The tours are meant to educate the public about the decreasing population of wild cats around the world and provide funding for worldwide wild cat conservation projects. It was so incredible to see these amazing animals up close. There are light refreshments halfway through the tour and merchandise you can purchase at the end of the tour. Highly recommend reaching out to book a tour with them or go to one of their open house events!

We were wrong. Wow, the experience was exceptional. The big cats are in very nice, well maintained, and impeccably clean enclosures. Every cat looked healthy and well cared for. The owners and team provided tremendous insights into each cat. We were there about 3.5 hours and we enjoyed every moment. We could get closer than one could get in any zoo-like experience. Yet, they had firm rules to keep everyone a safe distance from protruding claws. We also viewed the cheetah run. While interesting and memorable, it may be better to skip that element and just provide a greater donation. We are fortunate that people make the personal and professional commitments needed to preserve these amazing animals. All of us look forward to going back and contributing to their effort.

Russian River Railbikes is part of the Golden Gate Railroad Museum, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to maintain, restore and run historically significant railroad equipment from the San Francisco Bay area. The guides are all volunteers from the Golden Gate Railroad Museum. The guides were friendly, helpful, and informative. You will get somewhat of a workout, although this is not strenuous. This is an activity that you can really do at any age and they are kid friendly. One of the guides stated that they have had someone in a car seat before (they have seat belts on them similar to a car) and a couple in their 80's has gone multiple times and they arrange ahead of time to have two guides on the railbike to help with pedaling. This truly is a great adventure for all ages! It's about 1 1/2 or two hours total and you will pass by a vineyard and farm. You will also go through a tunnel and stop half way where you will get out and stretch your legs. You can relax at a shaded table, dip your toes in the Russian River, or view a collapsed tunnel at this half way point. You will also have the option when you book this to purchase lunch ahead of time that you can enjoy at the half way point if you would like. It's recommended that you wear comfortable clothes, wear sunscreen, and bring any water and snacks with you on the railbike. We each brought a water bottle that came in very handy. You will have plenty of time afterwards to explore Cloverdale. An all around great experience that I highly recommend!
