I'm on an extended work trip (visiting from LA) and needed a local gym - luckily my YMCA membership…read moretravels with me! I've really enjoyed working out here so far - it's clean with tons of equipment and super welcoming staff. Pro Tip: most SoCal memberships include nationwide access so you can keep up your routine when traveling (at no extra cost)!! All you have to do is sign their local waiver specific to their location. Just tell them you're nationwide and they can find you in the system. There are three locations in this area and you can use them all - this one, the one in the next town over (Sequim - and it has a pool!), and the one further north in Port Townsend. But it's my understanding you have to sign the waiver at each one on your first visit. They don't have a pool here at the PA location but they have a giant basketball court, tons of machines, free weights, treadmills, and any other equipment you could possibly need. Even at its busiest I never have issues with space or having to wait for gear. I've been using their treadmills - all of which seem very modern, smooth, and easy to operate. Their dumbbells and kettlebells are also mostly newish and in excellent condition. My only complaint is their weighted medicine balls - they're poor quality and in terrible shape - everything else has been great. They even have a dedicated and well padded stretching area. There are numerous cleaning stations scattered around and everyone seems to be great about cleaning the equipment when they're done. This YMCA is centrally located in town - very easy to get to and find with plenty of parking and clean bathrooms as well. They offer lots of classes too. Staff have all been wonderful and I've loved being able to keep up with my regimen and not loose my gains just bc I'm traveling.

It could be that John and Lisa treat you warmly, and professionally as if they were your personal coaches and friends... and that the whole team (regardless of class or level they choose to focus) is friendly and supportive without exception (and every one of them showing results!)... or that there are tons of classes all at realistic times to choose from. Additionally, there is TONS OF SPACE and equipment. Every day is a brand new workout...some old moves some new, but an AWESOME variety with booming sound system to keep it popping! Best yet, you start with a personalized assessment, and are encouraged to have correct posture in every level up to CrossFit, which you can progress to quickly, slowly or just stay in a class you are comfortable with. SO important. My knees have always been an issue in other gyms-- not here! Johns' eagle eye notices when there's a problem and he corrects the move to be pain free! No pressure! Late or skipped a class? No pressure (except from yourself to not miss a moment). This is an experience and John and Lisa, and their fellow coaches, are working every day to up it. (Don't miss Barbell Club Thursday night!) IMO this is the gym you want to join for expert coaching, pick your pace, pick your class. Every box checked!

I don't know what kind of budget this place is working with but the entire staff needs replaced. The level of incompetence from administration to lifeguards is astounding. It's not cheap by any means to put all 3 of my kids in swimming lessons, but clearly worth it. However these lessons for the most part are taught by teenagers that don't particularly seem to care. There are 8 sessions to a class and the last one is a "free day" for all the kids' hard work, even though they continue to hold the kids back and not pass them along. To be clear I don't want my kids passing to the next level if they aren't ready, but this negates the free day as far as I'm concerned. I am not just a disgruntled parent whose kids failed swimming lessons either. This has occurred on more than one occasion and it doesn't feel like their goal is to ensure the kids are learning what they need to continue on. So I have just spent $138 on lessons and not one of my children is moving up. I asked my son if any of the kids in his class of 5 passed and he said no. At some point it seems that falls on the instructors. Also they have a brand new mini playground outside that I asked about using since we were there for lessons and was told it's only for the after school program. Just bizarre. Not the same Shore Pool feeling from when I was a kid. Very sad. I hope they figure it out. As for my family we will be doing the extra drive to Sequim to use the YMCA pool from here on out. That pool is more like the old one anyways.. Large pool, gradual shallow to deep. Additional baby pool. Just better all around!!

It also has fun Christmas decorations to enjoy, with lit up ornaments so huge you can walk around in them! They rent ice skates on site if you don't have any and they also have a "Snack Shack". The village is run by local volunteers which I thought was really cool - the ice rink was full of kids and families having such a great time - Their website even has an ice rink webcam haha! It's free to enter in general but there's a charge for the skating. Prices are very reasonable and include the skate rental - and a ticket lasts you all day with in and out privileges. There's also a discount if you have your own skates. The volunteers provide "safety monitors" on the ice and there are benches/bleachers on the sidelines for family/audience viewing. We didn't skate but had fun watching briefly and walking around all the decorations. Parking seems to be all street parking in the surrounding area with time limits so be sure to read the signs. There are lots of cute shops and restaurants in the surrounding area so it makes for a fun outing!
