Being a hairstylist myself and having worked in a spa years ago, I'm always a little skeptical walking into other salons for spa/salon services. Studio Within is a very cute, quaint salon/spa and all in all, I enjoyed my Groupon Spa day. A couple things that caught me off guard: My massage therapist, Shannon, seemed VERY timid...which she shouldn't be because she gave an AMAZING massage. She just needs to work on her verbage and have some more confidence in her great work. I was a little annoyed with the fact that I could hear the entire consultation going on in the room next to me. With that said, Kate is amazing. She gave the best facial I've ever had. she educated me on every product she put on my face, even adding extra tips here and there. I found out that she tints eyelashes and was thrilled when she made time to fit that service in for me. She made me feel pampered, which was the entire point of me booking myself a spa day. She talked to me and asked me questions to get to know me, but stopped talking when it was time to relax. She is the true reason I'm giving 4 stars. She made the whole day better. I love the rewards card they offer AND getting a discount for pre-paying, so I did just that for my facial and massage. I can't wait to get back to Shannon so she can work out more knots and Kate for her fabulous skin care and facial massage. I had originally given Studio Within 4 stars and had more complaints, but the stylist sent me a message first thing this morning resolving any issues and offering a complimentary blow out. My review is for Thomas (a masseuse there) more so than for the spa itself. Every time I've gone to Studio Within, the receptionist takes my name and offers me a water all in one breath and then promptly ignores me. So the front desk could use a little work. However, Thomas is awesome. He is so worth coming back here. This is the first and only masseuse I've ever been to who has not insisted on playing raindrop sound effects or Enya. He has mellow music but it's actual music which is such a revelation. His massage was great - he really got into the knots but not so hard that it was painful or took me out of my relaxation. He also let me zone out when I first got there and then halfway through the massage, when I was feeling like chatting, he was wonderfully talkative and we had a great conversation. Also, I was not expecting a male masseuse when I arrived (once again, thanks, front desk) but he was immediately warm and professional, when it could have easily been an uncomfortable situation. I called here one day because I was desperate for a massage. Work was so hectic and I needed to relax a bit. They were so courteous and set me up with Charlie. I'd already read a few reviews about him being awesome and this was SO TRUE. His hands are like magic. I've had about 5 massages my whole life so maybe I'm no expert but I've never felt so good after a massage. My body felt like butter. There was no back pain, no kinks or anything left in my body. I don't think I've ever felt like that PERIOD. I've booked a few other sessions with Charlie already. He's great. Friendly, provides good conversation if you are so inclined and does really good work. The spa itself is cute. Staff is all very polite, offer water and tea and have some great deals. I love massages but being a girl on a budget really rely on internet deals to make massages affordable! I have had 3 or 4 massages here in the past from a variety of living social, groupon or their own loyalty cards. I have back and hip tension and am so glad they participate otherwise a massage would be a luxury I couldn't afford. Tonight I had the BEST 90 minute massage from Thomas. He asked about any concerns I had and really followed up on them throughout the massage. I felt all my concerns were addressed. He was accommodating and always checked to make sure I was comfortable. They have a very cute waiting area, cozy bathroom and everyone is very friendly. I love that it isn't fancy and pretentious but cozy and relaxing. The treatment rooms are tiny and the walls are thin.... but during a massage I am laying on a bed with my eyes closed so don't mind the small room and the music helps mask the voices from the other room/upstairs noise. My only other complaints would be that it can be hard to get an appointment in the evening and weekend so book ahead! I had to book 3 weeks in advance for this appointment and 6 wks in advance for my next one. Counting down the days until my appointment in May... read more

Will was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a rare kidney disease, over two years ago. The spa manager, Terri, was very understanding to the struggles that Will and our family had endured to keep his illness under control. Terri and Studio Within have never met Will personally, but have donated an extremely generous donation spa package (valued at $297) to our Team Will Fundraiser on February 23rd at Davenport's piano bar. All the proceeds of the event go directly to the Nephcure Foundation to find a cure for Will and other people with his disease. I got a "Custom Deluxe Facial." I love when you get a facial and they do extractions. My lady, Sheyanne, was so insanely super sweet, but hardly did any. She told me I had awesome skin and hardly any blackheads, but when I got home i took out about 15 myself. I'm sure the facial is not her "fault", but how they do them there is this. 10 minute mask where you're sitting there...wondering when it's going to be done. 2 minutes of extractions and then some type of mask/scrub put on your face and rubbed of for the next 30 minutes. We didn't discuss my skin at all or different things we could do to make it better or anything. I am so happy I got a groupon because if I actually had to pay full price for that, I would have been so mad. read more

Great facials! Great spa! I had many of facials before, however a facial with Nia, was hands down the best I ever had. The Salon itself is super cute and the atmosphere and employees are very professional and very thorough in their care of you as a customer. I have been going to Kristy at Studio Within for about 3 years now and can't say enough great things about her and the salon! I have some of the thickest hair that exists (and curly/wavy depending on the day). A bad haircut makes me look like an 80's Dallas Texas mall rat. Kristy works her magic with my hair. I can style it straight, put waves in it or simply comb it after a shower, throw some product in and let the curls have their wild way. STYLIST: Kristy has been my stylist since 2005. I liked having her cut my hair so much that I followed her from another salon to Studio Within. What can I say, when you find a stylist you love you need to hang onto them with a death grip. And I would follow Kristy anywhere because I am always happy with my cut. I also dig our conversations because she speaks my lingo - music, movies, fashion. SALON: As for Studio Within, from the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted by the friendly staff and asked immediately if they can get you something to drink. They have cool mags, play cool music, and always seem to be making updates to the salon. I also like the fact that they give local artists the chance to hang their artwork at the salon. Oh, and they are extremely "green" friendly! I have never used any of the salons other services but can only assume that they would be just as outstanding and professional. I was in for a 90 minute massage today and was extremely disappointed. The lobby is very cute and kitschy, which is totally my style - so I was really excited. However, Anthony was my massage therapist and it was probably the most uncomfortable massage I've ever had, for a number of reasons: 1) The massage focused on areas that are not needed or part of a typical massage. 2) Played the same 3 songs from his iPhone on repeat for the entire 90 minutes, one of the songs had some questionable background sound - awesome. 3) Beds were hard and uncomfortable There were other issues, but these were the big ones for me. I got a Groupon for a massage and thought I'd give this place a shot. I had a 90 min massage with Shane today and he was the absolute BEST! First, his personality and playlist are wonderful lol. But more importantly, his massage was spot on. He specializes in rehabilitative massage and went to school for 7 years, and it's very clear he understands the body, how the muscles connect, etc. I have a neck injury from over 10 years ago that causes me pain every day, and he did an amazing job of breaking down the knots and working on muscles that I didn't even know were tense and/or connected to the problem. Overall, I'm beyond satisfied! Also, when you book a massage there, they give you a frequency card that provides discounts for your next three one hour massages - $59 for the first, $69 for the second, and $79 for the third. AND if you book on the spot, you save $10... $49 for an hour massage with an amazing massage therapist?? Ridiculous deal! Highly recommend! read more

I'm all in!! Let me tell you about this salon/spa and it's employees: The salon/spa is fairly small but is so beautifully decorated and has a very relaxing atmosphere. The woman at the front desk is very professional and has a lovely demeanor. The spa is an oasis of relaxation; from the soft music to the orange ambient lighting coming from Himalayan salt crystal lamps. After years and years of sun-damage and not knowing what products to use on my face, I stumbled upon this salon/spa and it's team of experts. I have been getting facials from Jackie monthly since Aug 2016, and my skin has never felt and looked so good. Jackie, an esthetician, is super gentle, knowledgeable and ever so SWEET. She explains what she's doing and even makes recommendations about what I could do in my everyday life to improve my skin and complexion. Most other places are only concerned with what product they can sell you for $60, but I never have that experience. I leave with refreshed pores and with renewed and moistened skin. My face always feels so clean and relaxed after the treatment. Investing in one's skin is one of the best investments someone can make. For this, the MEMBERSHIP packages cannot be beat. MEET PAUL, THE CURL MASTER. I have never met someone more passionate and meticulous about curls than Paul. I've been going to the Deva salon in NYC for almost a decade and thought I was fully versed in all things Deva. Paul showed me new tricks to the trade and shortcuts to make detangling and styling less time consuming and labor intensive. Plus he's hilarious. I've never had more fun at a salon in my life (and as a Dominican I've spent about half my life in a salon). He went the extra mile and didn't stop trying new strategies with my curls until he was happy. He explained why we must say NO to coconut oil (I know right?). I waited years to get the Deva-cut and I'm kicking myself for it. Kristy did my cut and she is great. Not only is she easy to chat with she listened to me and really helped me through the process. The appointment was not just a cut but also a consultation. I now have more knowledge on the DevaCurl way of styling and which products would be best for my hair. The salon is really cute and has a neat retro vibe. Street parking is available, but on street cleaning day it's a nightmare (that was my experience at least). I say before you get The DevaCurl cut learn as much as you can about it and the products they recommend. For me there were no surprises. Kristy is fantastic and now that I've met her I'm sure the other stylists are as well. I drove from the south suburbs to the Northside for the best and I definitely got it. Three stars as an average of a two-star massage and a four-star facial. I bought a Groupon package for a 60-minute massage and a mini facial. I unfortunately arrived about 10-15 minutes late due to traffic. I'm not sure in these cases whether the client only gets to the end of the hour, or whether they get the full time that they paid for. My massage therapist, Jeff, didn't seem to have any clients booked immediately after me. My massage felt pretty rushed and the opposite of relaxing. Granted, about 5-10 minutes in I realized that I had forgotten to feed my meter, so I had to get dressed, rush out, and come back in. I'm not sure whether that impacted the remainder of the hour, but he ended 3-5 minutes early, which meant that even if I hadn't had to feed my meter, I didn't even get a full 45 minutes. He also felt uneven; he started first with my right side, and then just rushed through the entire left side of my body. As he walked me out into a waiting area for me to get my facial next, he started lecturing me (even though he said twice, "I'm not trying to lecture you...") about how 60-minute massages "go by just like that *snapping fingers* for us therapists," and that I really should have booked the 90-minute massage. Ooookay, first of all, my Groupon deal was only for a 60-minute massage, and also maybe the massage went by "just like that" because you didn't even actually give me a full 60-minute massage... The facial felt nice and relaxing, and Jackie's energy was much more calming. My skin felt hydrated after, even though I broke out the very next day (which is not uncommon for me when I get facials). read more

APPALLING SERVICE. I am a former client who will never return. I have never posted a review on Yelp, however, the service was so bad this last time - I feel it necessary to warn others. My friend purchased a Groupon for me and her to have a "spa day". I hadn't been to the salon for a couple of years as I had moved but when my friend mentioned she found the Groupon I said they had always been great and to book it. She booked two appointments - both under our respective names and nothing was mentioned. My friend did not read the fine print noting "first time clients only" which was legitimately our mistake, however nothing was mentioned at the time of booking. We arrived ON THE DAY to then be told, after I kindly informed them I was a former client (my friend was a new client) that I could either (i) pay the difference which was an additional $100 or (ii) cancel. My friend had driven in from Michigan to do this together. We calmly asked if there was anything else they could do (given I could have not mentioned I was a former client and they'd have been none the wiser) but she said that was policy. We were fuming. They gave us no other options. We cancelled our appointments. I had previously recommended this studio and by virtue of a simple mistake (which didn't impact them at all financially) was treated appallingly. We will never return and am telling everyone I know how appalling this service was. To think, if they had been flexible - my friend and I would have tipped generously and enjoyed our day. Instead, we had our time wasted and day ruined - all because the manager wanted to prove a point and be a stickler for policy. Whatever happened to treating people with kindness and understanding. In response to Kristy's remarks: As mentioned, my friend booked the Groupon unbeknownst to her that it was for first time Clients. Sure, we admitted it was our mistake but one that was not picked up on at the time of booking by your staff and one which we did not intentionally do to try to circumvent your policy. If it wasn't for me notifying your front desk that I was a former client (to assist your staff from unnecessary data entry) none of this would have been an issue. Furthermore, I was in fact, bringing you a new client. We would have returned and continued our good word of mouth if not for your behaviour. You're right though, your policy to not be flexible and appease a client has cost you financially. For $79 (which you would have recouped in tips and further business from our recommendations and future patronage) you ruined a fun girls afternoon and lost 2 clients, one of whom was new. Clinging to the idea of never "letting one slide" is obviously your prerogative however, my experience is that successful businesses tend to listen and make value judgments based on the circumstances not purely policy. I have been following my esthetician for 3 yrs now and I go where ever she goes. Latonya is fa-bu-lous. My skin has never looked better. She's always honest when it come to my very dry and adult acne prone skin, and will never try to sell you a whole bunch of products I don't need (which I like cause I have wasted a lot of money on stuff that didn't work), but she will tell me exactly what I need to get my skin to look good long after my fabulous and relaxing facial. My skin looks dewey fresh for days after my facial. She is very welcoming and warm that you feel so at ease and relaxed. She does great eyebrow and lashes also. The new space she is in is very warm and inviting and the people I interacted with were pretty cool. Also I found a park a block away and didn't need to feed the meter which was great for that area, but there was lots of available meter parking. I got my hair cut here with Erin and it was fantastic!! She is very fun and personal and did an amazing job. Erin is the only person I trust to cut my hair because I have very thick hair and it can be difficult to cut. She has a knack for layering and thinning my hair so that it can air dry and lay perfectly every time! She is amazing!!! The salon itself is inviting and very friendly. The staff at the salon on the day I got my hair cut were friendly, talkative and very welcoming. It was my first time at their salon but I felt like I had been there a dozen times. Great experience and I will for sure be going back. Bonus points: I have gotten loads of compliments on my cut since I got it done!!!! Even one from an airport security guard! read more

I have been going to SWSS for years for one main reason- massage therapist Shannon Wolfe. I have many issues caused by scoliosis and she targets my most troubled areas without even needing to point them out. Don't let her sweet nature fool you ;) because she will give you a deep massage better than any man. I know the difference between intense and painful (which can lead to inner muscle bruising) and never once has she hurt me. I made my facial appointment the day before and was very pleased to know I could in. For my facial, there was a new technician who knew her stuff. Excellent tender hands and it included a relaxing hand & foot massage. The cost came from a GroupOn special which is no longing available, but I did book a follow up with the same discounted rate. I called to make the appointment and was told because I have the Groupon, I can't make an appointment for Friday's or saturdays, which of course is when I would like to come. She told me at the moment they have openings, I just would have to call that day and I can't be guaranteed. When I pointed out that this is not listed on the Groupon, she agreed and said it is an internal policy. When I asked how as a first time customer I am supposed to know about this, there was no answer. I just had one of the best massages I've ever gotten today with Fernando. After a very disappointing experience less than a month ago at a different spot, I left this salon feeling great. It was a Gilt City offer I had purchased, and so glad I did! I've been hesitant in the past getting a massage from a male massage therapist, but Fernando was absolutely fantastic!!! I definitely plan to book with him again in the future. The people at the front desk are also super nice, I wasn't exactly sure where the salon was at, so the girl from the desk came outside to meet me and even stood in a parking space so I could park my car as someone pulled away. Fast forward 4 years and I have been going back to Studio Within since moving back to Chicago. Now I see a new stylist -- Jacob -- and he's wonderful!
