I came to Studio Six to have the batteries of my two watches replaced. My Paul Frank watch took a little while to put the backing back on, and I was a little worried with the tools he was using, but he did get it back in. My Skagen watch, though, was trickier because of the small watch face. He was honest with me and said that it would take him much longer to get the backing of of the watch because his hands are big for the job. He recommended me to go down the street a little to the sunglasses store (Berkeley Shades and Optical, which also sold watches). The owner there sells Skagens and has smaller hands to work in the watch. I thanked him.and paid for the one battery ($8). I went over to the other store, and golly boy, I regret that so much. Double check their hours before you go! The Yelp hours are not accurate at the moment, but they were open starting from 11am on Friday when I went. I needed to change the battery for a watch, and the store owner had it done (in addition to cleaning it and setting the time) in under five minutes. Waited several days to write this review, so that I wouldn't. y'know, be using all capitals and exclamation points and the like. My first (but not likely last) experience here, last Sunday left me with the knowledge that I'd just been dealing with someone (Russell, the owner) who'd shown honesty, integrity, competence, expertise, resourcefulness, and a few other complimentary nouns I can't remember at the moment. He saved me most of the money I'd expected to pay, by suggesting a cheaper option (quickly replacing one part of my watchband rather than selling me a new one), and in our conversation during the 8 to 10 minutes I spent there I got a sense of his knowledge of watches and also learned a couple of interesting things about Telegraph Ave, a street I already know quite a bit about. Russell is a sweetheart. My beloved Movado watch that I've had for over a decade burnt out its motor. Of course, he and I both thought it was a dead battery, so he tried replacing the battery twice before diagnosing the motor problem. He didn't charge me, I guess because I walked away without a watch that yet worked... but he'd still spent time changing the battery and diagnosing the problem, so I thought not charging was so generous and kind of him. Stopped in to get my old watch looked at and they were able to open it up and fix it on the spot. It didn't need much, but other places wanted to ship it out for at least 3 weeks and all it needed was someone to look and make some tweaks to the spring inside. I think this is hard to find these days (another jeweler said he didn't want to open it up in case he would make it worse and I would blame him. Odd). So my experience here was great and the guy working only charged me a couple of bucks for his time. read more

Do not pay attention to the "open" times. It is open only when they feel like it. The man was super rude when I came by at 2PM to get a new watch band and he wanted to go to lunch, though the sign said open. He told me I'd have to come back another time. Wandered into Berkeley for some ice cream sandwiches when we stumbled upon Lee's street side table in front of her store. You can tell that the quality of jewelry on her table was way above the other street vendors. All jewelry is made of sterling silver and is priced according to weight. While I was scoping out the rings, one of her previous customers walked up and unfortunately her necklace broke. Lee said she would fix it for free..no questions asked! I thought that was so nice! I ended up leaving with a gorgeous handmade sterling silver ring that I will be wearing daily! I've been looking for a ring like this for awhile and I'm glad I found it here! Very unprofessional service and terrible attitude. I went there for watch battery change last Sunday. I don't know in what way but the glass cover of my watch stucked in his tool. He wanted me to leave the watch and come on Monday. I insisted on taking the watch with me. He said he usually doesn't open on Monday but would open it for me. We made an appointment on 5:30. On Monday I went there, and the store was closed. I called, left message, he never called back. This Saturday I called and went there again. He sounded nice over the phone. He was friendly and pleasant and did a fantastic job of replacing my watch battery for a great price and told me that the watch needed a new gasket and replaced it for free.
