The Studio Shop is a family-owned business that takes good care of its customers, gets to know your taste, and offers skilled advice for framing and art choices. Sisters Janet and Kristen Benson are two of the principals, and I've found they have a great eye and are a tremendous help when considering different framing options. They offer as many choices as you can handle and stay neutral, never influencing your decision. The selection of beautiful, often hand-made and hand-finished framing materials is incredible. There's also more simpler styles for those on a budget. I recently attended the Antiques Roadshow appraisal event in San Jose, and brought a 100-year old doeskin Stanford flag that was framed some years ago at The Studio Shop. The first thing the collectibles appraiser asked me was, "Did you frame this?" I said yes, and he said, "The framing is beautiful, really lovely, and more valuable than what you framed." I see this fellow on TV on the Roadshow all the time, and it's pretty clear he knows good stuff, so at least I walked away knowing my framing job was a treasure! We came here to find a frame for a landscape photo my husband took which he had blown up and put on canvas. We luckily had a Groupon and it was the perfect time to use it. The store is a nice size with a hefty selection of frames for custom framing. Julie was the lady that helped us and she was extremely helpful and gave us great ideas. I also felt she was really knowledgeable about the frames they carried and knew just what would compliment the photo based on the colors and content of the photo itself. I decided to try a new frame shop. Explanation of the widths of the matting and frame wasn't what I expected from what was described - very narrow for the special matting I selected so you can't see the texture. Plus I had to follow-up with the shop and it took several weeks instead of two weeks. Very expensive and not a quality matting. I was shocked and won't use them again. These guys did a tremendous job artistically framing and preserving a priceless old newspaper from 1845. The helped pick out the best frame for the piece (and for my budget), and the focus was always on helping, not selling. 2 weeks later I have a perfectly preserved piece that I no longer have to worry about degrading. The Real Deal! This place is awesome! My wife and I first went here to get our Ketubah framed from our wedding. We were promptly helped by one of the staff who was professional, knowledgeable and had a keen eye. With her help we picked a matting and frame in about 15 min. When we picked it up we were blown away. It looked fantastic! We couldn't have asked for more. The attention to detail was unquestionable. About a month later we purchased a modern print from Upper Playground that needed framing. I wasn't sure if it would be overkill to have it done at the Studio Shop but we went ahead anyway since our last experience worked out so well. This time I went on my own and worked with another of the staff. Again we picked out the frame and matting in about 15 min. It looked like it was going to come out well but when I picked it up yesterday I was totally blown away (again!)! I don't think this print has ever looked so good, anywhere. We picked the perfect frame and matting for it. It is now hanging above our bed and every time I look at it I can't get over how clean and just amazing it looks! 5 stars all the way! This place kicks major ass! I don't think it is possible to be disappointed with work done by The Studio Shop. P.S. I usually only Yelp when I don't like a place. I bought a pretty antique wood frame at a flea market and brought it to The Studio Shop to have a mirror put in. Julie and Janet gave me great advice to use a beveled mirror and have it lightly antiqued so that it looks like it belongs in the frame. It wasn't a cheap way to go, but it looks fabulous, and I'm sure I'll enjoy this mirror for many, many years to come. So, it was worth the investment. This was the first time I've used The Studio Shop and I could tell just by the phone conversation I had with Julie and walking into their beautiful space that they have passion for their work and excellent taste. When I was on my way to drop off the frame after work one evening, traffic was heavy and I knew I'd miss closing time. Janet was there and very kindly waited until I arrived! I had a very challenging framing project - I had hundreds of postcards from all over the world from my grandpa's Ham Radio hobby. I hoped to have them displayed in such a way that would be modern and gallery-quality. Janet came to my house and we discussed the options, deciding upon 4 large white shadowbox frames with white matting. Each card was mounted beautifully in perfectly symmetrical lines, which must have been extremely labor intensive to execute so well. The people behind The Studio Shop are what make this a place to return to again and again for any framing needs.
