Normally I'm not one to write bad reviews but with my last attempted in booking with Gavin Kivenin , I figured other people should be aware as well. He has done my hair a couple times in the past, which was great and I was very happy with the results; however last year after booking my appointment and showing up to the hair salon on time , he never showed up. Not only this, but I had already paid for my service ahead of time. To not be communicated or updated until some time afterwords (after I had sent multiple texts/calls to see if he was still arriving for our scheduled appointment), was so extremely unprofessional and something I had never had to go through prior. Also, while he reimbursed some of the cost he still has failed to reimburse the full amount . Book at your own risk! read more

Go see Taylor Tesch at Studio 411 for all your skincare needs! I've seen her for multiple services and have always left feeling clean, beautiful and confident. My skin has improved so much from visiting Taylor. From dermaplaning to facials to lash lifts, she does it all and does a great job. Taylor will make you feel incredibly comfortable during your service, she makes fantastic recommendations for products to use at home and all of her services are priced very reasonably. I can't recommend Taylor enough and will be going to Studio 411 long into the future! read more

About 2yrs ago I won a free facial! I was so nervous about getting it due to never putting anything on my face. I finally went & Kelly Hegna Ekdahl was the one who preformed my facial. Let's say if I could have this done once a week I would. She was so amazing the atmosphere was so comfortable its unexplainable the energy in her room was Zen. Blown away. I went to Gavin Kivinen for color today. (1st time seeing him). I'm Black, so I was fully expecting to have to flat iron my own hair when I got home. To my surprise, after giving me gorgeous chocolate highlights, he whipped out a flat iron--and gave me one of the top two flatirons I've ever had on my life. Any stylist. I had an absolutely fabulous experience here, from the free parking to my hairstylist (Gavin) to growing out my cut up until now. First, this place is situated in a classy residential neighborhood, which means free street parking and a cute coffee shop next door. :) When I walked into the salon, it was lively but not loud, in addition to being very clean (bonus points!). Onto my stylist, Gavin - he worked absolute magic on my hair. I had a terrible haircut from before, which resulted in an awful shelf. Gavin had an excellent consultation and guided me step by step what he would do with my hair. Additionally, when he dyed my hair, I did not have a single mark on my face or head (aka he was super neat about applying dye). He also recommended I dye my hair a different color and dye it less so as to cause less damage. This may sound kind of "duh" to some, but in my experience, a lot of hair stylists try to get you to dye your hair as often as possible because it tends to be a more $$$ service. As my hair has been growing out, I could not have been more pleased. The layers really add volume and have grown out evenly at the length I wanted. I am already excited for my next appointment! :) P.S. - The salon carries Davines, a high quality hair product line. Gavin used to be an educator of the product, so he actually knows how to take care of hair well. Ask him questions about it and pick up a bottle. You won't regret it! read more

Joann makes her money, apparently, by running the circuit between Groupon, LivingSocial and Crowd Cut. I tried to book- it's all automated on line and she has precious little availability and not far enough out. When I called her to address an appointment time by phone, she couldn't keep her deals straight. I just bought mine and she was chiding me for waiting til the last minute with a little laugh. Then she offered sweetly that I should go back to LivingSocial to get a refund. Apparently, she's already been paid by LivingSocial so customer service is out the window now that her money is made. I felt we had a miscommunication as to which deal we were talking about and left another message (for a total of 3 attempts on my part) and she never bothered to return my call. I did get a credit from L.S., albeit a RELUCTANT one. LivingSocial should take it up with their merchants and not the purchaser. I am now wary of using LivingSocial again- the girl on the phone sounded like she really hated her job, and by connection, the caller as well. This is the first bad experience I have had with ANY Groupon-type service. Too bad. read more

Absolutely awesome haircuts by the very talented Olivia. She is confident, modern, artistic, and will listen to you. I've had 2 haircuts and have been pleased every time. The quality of service and talent is like a salon experience on the coasts. I've been looking for the perfect haircut for a long time, and I now have it. Love this place! I went randomly but now I can't stop going. My hair stylist is Zachary and he is so legit. Often I go in with a vague idea of what I want and a bad case of the "boring hair blahs" and he get's busy. I go about every 6 months because I am a terrible human, but he is such a rockstar, that he is amazing at giving me cuts or color that can handle 6 months of growth. I recently went to Studio411 for my first time after purchasing a $30 Groupon for Joanne for a Shellac mani and basic pedi (normally $75). I will say that this is a smaller, albeit upscale, salon and thus they do not have a receptionist. That being said, don't hesitate to let any of the salon staff know you are there to be "checked in". The salon staff, and Joanne, were great. It is clear that they are amazing at what they do because Joanne (being the only manicurist on staff) is booked out consistently at 2-3 month intervals. In fact, when I went to my appointment on 09/17/14, there were no openings for another visit until November. So if you know you want to return, be sure to book your next visit BEFORE leaving the salon. The level of service and the ambiance of the salon make it well worth the price. Joanne never pushed product on me and answered all of my questions. I would highly recommend returning. read more

I have seen Joanne now 3 or 4 times and each time I leave with gorgeous Shellac'd nails! I discovered this salon via Groupon and am so glad I did. My mom is a manicurist and this is the first salon I've been to that really gives her a run for the money! (Sorry, Mom). If you live in and around the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, or if you just want a great mani/pedi, I highly recommend visiting this salon. I see Allison for cuts and color and she does a terrific job. I have problematic hair that is fine and frizzy (the worst of both worlds!) but since seeing Allison on a regular basis for the past several months my hair looks better than ever. And she has taught me how to style it myself easily at home so it doesn't just look good when I leave the salon! My color looks natural and makes my hair actually look shiny and healthy rather than that dull opaque shoe polish look some people end up with after years of gray touch ups. I couldn't be happier with Allison she is great. read more

I bought a Groupon for Studio 411 for a $25 pedicure and paraffin hand treatment. The appointment was supposed to be 1 hour and the retail value was $60. I arrived about 10 minutes early and was greeting by no one. They seem to have foregone a central system of appointment making or tracking. I waited for a few minutes and my nail technician found me. To be clear, I have gotten many pedicures, both at high end spas and at strip mall places. I have also worked in a salon/spa. My expectation is that a 1 hour appointment will include a scrub, foot filing, a foot and leg massage, and nail trimming and polishing. I bought the Groupon as a treat to myself, thinking it would be a nice relaxing break in my day. It was not. The salon is "under construction" which apparently means they have a guy fixing chairs in the middle of the room, a pedicure room that feels like a storage closet, no disposable flip flops, and are low on paraffin. I ended up not getting polish on my toes because they had no flip flops and I didn't want to wait around the salon barefooted for my toes to dry, especially since they had no designated area to do this. My expectation after I decided against polish would be an extended massage, or some other type of service to take up the time in my hour-long appointment, but instead I got a half hour pedicure with limited improvement to my feet or mood. The person that did my pedicure was only sort of nice. First, she argued with me about the temperature of the water, but not before plunging her hand (which had a bandaid over an open cut) into the tub several times. Gross. After that she wasn't sure she wanted to wear gloves to do my pedicure, which is not a great sign. In general, the place did not seem clean or well maintained. Overall, the pedicure was not very good, the salon was a mess, and the general level of customer service was disappointing for a pedicure with a normal value of $60. If I had paid that much I would have asked for my money back. read more

I also bought the $25 Groupon. My experience was just ok. If it wasn't for the woman that actually serviced me, this place would rank far worse. I must have been fortunate enough to go prior to the construction. I went in mid-May. I was not greeted when I walked in and stood around for a bit before interrupting one of the hair stylists to say I had an appointment. I hate interrupting people... The woman who did my pedicure and hands was very sweet. She was an older woman with blonde hair. Very friendly and talkative. Overall her service was great, however, it was unfortunate she had to be so apologetic about the hair stylists who decided to retreat to the back of the salon to gossip about life, which consisted of quite a bit of profanity. When the woman reached a point where she could leave my feet, she finally went and said something and the girls giggled away. Also, the nail area IS like a basement closet. It's sad this place can't get it together, it's in a great neighborhood. read more

I just had a haircut by Gavin and he is very talented! He washes your hair, puts you under a blower, hair blowdries your hair, straightens it and then cuts it dry while you sometimes are standing up. I don't think my hair has ever looked this good. It looked good before he even started cutting just because of his mad skills with the straightening tools. I only knock off a star because of the salon itself. I used to go to a different stylist here who was also good, but they don't make it easy to book an appointment. There's no receptionist, no set hours, I can't find their website and most of the stylists don't have online booking. The salon itself is just a few doors down from me and now that I have Gavin's number, I can text him. Thanks Gavin! read more

Gavin is Fantastic! I am VERY picky when it comes to my hair (I almost always have to go back and get something fixed) so I took a HUGE chance on going to Gavin, right before a much anticipated vacation and I was so happy I did! First off, for anyone who has not used the Davines product line, it is one of the best out there and I can honestly say I have tried just about every hair care product line available. Gavin is a Davines trainer and expert. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about what he does. Second, Gavin was more concerned with restoring my hair back to health and I learned more about maintaining healthy hair in the 2 hrs we spent together than I have in the 17 years I have been going to salons. Third, Gavin listened to what I wanted, how much time I am willing to put into it and he totally delivered (and for less than I have paid in the past). We didn't know if they would work with children, but they were glad to work with my daughter and even had a cute little monster cape! I've lived in Bryn Mawr for nearly 5 years and never visited Salon 411. My loss! I recently spent an evening getting my hair brought back to life by Gavin. Color, cut and brows - all of them amazing. He made my hair a gorgeous shade of honey blonde, shaped my burly brows and cut my lion's mane into sleek layers. I was beyond impressed with his extreme attention to detail, skill, talent, experience, and fantastic personality - I had a blast getting to know him. He has 10 plus years of styling experience in Atlanta GA but is new to the area and I've found my stylist soulmate! I've visited and been faithful to several high end salons in the Minneapolis St Paul area through the years and have never had a better experience - products, staff, atmosphere, this place has it all. Although the atmosphere is a little strange, being in the back of the shop, it was definitely clean and quiet. We had the area to ourselves. I've given this salon so many chances to wow me; especially since we live in the neighborhood but, now that our hairdresser has left, we are very happy to be rid of this place! At any other salon, we'd be a 'dream' customer; as we spend a TON of money on ALL services, buy product, treat employees with respect AND tip 20%; but, not here. This salon has a way of making you feel like you don't belong from the moment you cross the threshold (and we are a family who's outward appearance has every other store in town, greeting us immediately, in hopes we 'spend as good as we look' (lol). I truly have left there just baffled at how pretentious the owner and staff are and, honestly, don't understand how his doors stay open?? But, thankfully, our stylist has moved; and, even though his new salon isn't nearly as convenient, my daughters and I are finally back to leaving a salon feeling as good on the inside, as we look on the outside. read more
