My car died on the NY Thruway today near Kingston. Lost all electrical power. Had to have the car towed and the tow driver suggested bringing the car to STS, who I thought just did tires. I was surprised STS was open on Sunday, on a holiday weekend no less. The STS folks were completely sympathetic to my plight and agreed to do what they could for my car immediately. They couldn't get it started and had 4 guys push it into the garage to start taking a look. They ran all their diagnostics and found out it needed a new battery as well as alternator. After awhile, the head tech came out and sadly told me that he would not be able to fix the car because of the awkward placement of the alternator behind the coolant lines, and he was afraid he'd cause more problems than he would solve, and recommended other local places better equipped to perform the work. I was very impressed with his honesty and asked what I owed him for his trouble. He said not a penny, and had his 4 guys push the car back out for the next tow. While we waited, they offered my wife and I refreshments, and gave us the remotes to watch tv in the lobby while we waited. I know it's unusual to write a good review for work that wasn't successfully completed, but I really appreciated the welcoming attitude, honesty, and effort that the folks at STS made to help us through a difficult day. read more

I made an appointment yesterday to have my all season tires (purchased from you last year) mounted on my car. I got there and was told I would have a 1.5 to 2 hr wait. You were right 2 hrs exactly. Then I was charged 9.99 a tire for TPMS labor ( my car does not have this) the final strike was $34.99 a tire to mount and balance? TIRES I PURCHASED FROM YOU!! They inflate prices and then claim you are getting a discount. They convinced my wife that she needed tires because there were cracks on the side wall so it would not pass inspection. They also advised she needed back breaks on a vehicle with a total 20,000 miles on it. When I saw the bill as was a but furious. After talking to a car dealer friend he advised me that the brakes probably didn't need to happen but he could say for sure, but the tires were a rip off. Do not get an inspection here. It is impossible to get out without a hefty bill. After going there I found out that they up charged claiming they were giving a discount and old tires I didn't need. I had my brakes serviced at STS, was up-sold on suspension work. When I got home it was apparent my emergency brake has been been reassembled correctly and was not catching consistently. I brought it back to be fixed and was told the ebrake needed to be replaced. Why was this not communicated upon original inspection? I did not have any issue with my ebrake prior to coming in. I do not trust this shop, either they aren't competent mechanics or they are up selling unnecessarily. read more

Wow, good prices but there's a reason -- you get what you pay for. Services that are supposed to take "an hour" end up taking an entire workday. I made a 9:30 am appt for my brakes and spent the entire day, losing all my work for that day, before they finished. They really don't have a sense of schedule or prioritization, and it shows. If you value your time, go elsewhere. You'll end up saving money by paying a few bucks more just about anywhere else. Won't get going back. read more

As with all of the other positive reviews, I received excellent service when I purchased a new set of tires at STS this week. I originally found the tires I wanted online but then discovered they'd been spec'd at the wrong size when I showed up for my appointment. They initially offered some alternatives but once I said I had my heart set on the brand + model I'd originally ordered, they tracked down the correct size and had them delivered in time to install the next day. Fair price, great service, and prompt installation right when I arrived for my scheduled appointment. AND they went above and beyond to ensure I got the tires I wanted. I went in for what became an involved total exhaust system repair. A specific part needed to be ordered directly from the dealer since my car was manufactured overseas (which was unknown at the outset). Matt and Dustin were very polite and kept me informed every step of the way and honored the originally quoted price for the job even though they had to jump through hoops and wait for parts to arrive. I've strongly recommend STS auto I have an infinity Q 45 2005 I had to get suspension work done inner and outer tie rods and front new struts there is some miscommunication and they charged me $997 for everything after tax when I went to pick up my vehicle they told me it would be $4600 something around there I was shocked and I told them that was not right they owned up to their mistake and they let me keep the parts and they lowered the price to 940 and apologized about the mistake I almost had a heart attack thank you so much guys and I strongly recommend this place again they do amazing work I will definitely be back in the future read more

After putting the car up on to begin, they discovered some major issues with the car underneath. He called me and said he could put the tires on the car if I Insisted, but he wouldn't recommend it. I'm done with the bait and switch. First I want to state that I have never has work done at this STS location. I have been using Mavis for the last 15ish years on 4 different cars throughout the years. I was tired of getting the feeling of being ripped off and up selling. So I wanted to tre STS down the road eventhough it is still a Mavis company. I found that it was the same scam. I was once again baited and switched. This was the 3rd time in 2 years. Twice at Mavis and yesterday at STS. I called the day before seeing what was in stock and if I could bring my car in the next day. Talked to Brian who was very professional and helpful. Long story short. The tires I ordered were not in stock and they can give me a deal on some other ones. Guy at the counter talked down the tires I had ordered eventhough he said he has the same on his car. We did ended up on better tires but also $60 more. I wasnt happy, after turning over my keys... I canceled it. Its It's not the price, it is about trust and I do not trust the Mavis companies any more. This was the 3rd time this exact same thing happened in 2 years. Last time was just last month at the Mavis... I went along 2 times, Couldn't do it again. Really thought that the STS would be different. The phone conversation with Brian was so easy and pleasant. When I asked the counter guy about the call, he said oh that's our call center and had no idea what happened. Note I do want to say that I have not had a problem using Mavis online order and scheduling appointments. When you order online the tires you ordered are the ones you get. All 3 times were order on the phone. Seems like their inventory management system is not accurate. The call center does not have up to date information. Never again. I'm done with Mavis. I'll pay more at local shops but its better than getting the feeling of being ripped off. read more

I had the misfortune to be sent back to STS when I tried to get a discount on an alignment from MAVIS. The counter person had an arrogant and insensitive communcation style. The mechanic who looked at my car told me that I needed new front suspension parts on both sides and that the driver side axle was leaking. I told him the axles were new and he changed his story. I had the axles installed recently with no mention of anything wrong with the tie rods or sway bar links. Furthermore, the car was looked at by an STS tech. a month earlier with no mention of these issues. I would not have chosen to go back there except for an online promotional discount. Caveat emptpr. Had 4 new tires put on. Took twice as long as they said it would and they balanced my tires incorrectly. I called the next day and they said come in and when I got there they said it was a three hour wait! They sent me to the Mavis across town to do the rebalance and I waited two hours! Sorry, I used to like this place. My only criteria for a mechanic/shop is: Do they rip me off or not? From about 2010 to 2016, I used STS tire and they did not rip me off. They were overpriced, but I never felt that they were insisting on work that didn't need to be done. Their tires are a little more expensive than others, but it's worth it to be dealing with a shop that doesn't rip you off. Maybe they got a new manager in 2017, but I had two experiences with them this past year that has completely changed my mind on STS/Bonesteel. Once, they insisted on doing the back brakes on a car that really didn't need it (my wife brought the car in and didn't know enough to argue with them). Below is detail on the 2nd issue: Unfortunately, my most recent experience with them will be my last. I brough my car in for an inspection. I realize that New York State fixes the price of an inspection at $26 and it's hard for a shop to make money at a flat rate of $26 unless they "discover" other issues with your car that you "need to fix". This time, they told me that I had two belts that were worn and need replacement before they could pass my car for inspection. Now, I know the NYS inspection does not cover the belts (unless the belt is a serpentine belt which would include the power steering pump: https://dmv.ny.gov/inspection/general-information-inspection-stations ) but as I said, I always expect an 'add-on' when I get an inspection, because NYS mandates that an inspection be $26 and it's hard for a shop to make money unless they come up with additional work your car needs. I argued that the belt running the A/C compressor didn't matter and I could replace it later. So I talked them down to replacing one belt. But, it turns out, both belts were fine (if anyone wants to see a picture, I asked STS to save the old belt, which they did). So I paid an extra $100 to replace a belt that was totally fine. How do I know this? Read on... To add insult to injury, it turns out they USED THE WRONG SIZE BELT! My car has been squealing and shuddering. I brought the car to the dealer and they told me the aftermarket belt that STS put in was the wrong size and was causing the squealing and stuttering problem (and the A/C compressor belt was, of course, fine). Turns out bringing your car to STS for a safety inspection results in getting ripped off for $100+ AND a car that is unsafe. Thanks STS! Never again. I now use Jiffy Lube for my inspections- the most they hit you up for during an inspection is a wiper blade. I don't mind paying the extra $15 for a wiper blade- it's a small price to pay to get the peace of mind of not having to worry about what unnecessary work STS has done to my car that makes it DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. Shame on you, STS. I recommend everyone avoid STS and get their inspections elsewhere. Tires are cheaper on tirerack.com too, so check that out. Especially if you are female or don't know much about cars- avoid this place at all costs, they seem like they are only out to rip you off now. If we all stand up against shops that rip us off, we'll all be better off as a society. read more

Medicore. Staff is nice, price is decent, work is eh. I had 4 tires put on 4 rims and a 4 wheel alignment, about 200 bucks. Had uote higher quotes, had lower (Mavis isn't ever happening again) so tried STS. Staff was kind, pretty professional. Price was decent. Took a little longer than expected but no big deal. Was about 3 hours total... which whatever, if the job is done right and clean, worth it. I think the wheels were properly balanced, alignment properly done, but as soon as I get to my car I see dirt all over the door handle, then when I get inside I see dirt all over the top of the steering wheel and shifter. Which... eh it is what it is. These guys are mechanics, I can clean up a little bit. I get home, clean it up, look at the new tires, they left all of the sticky residue from the previous balancers on each rim.. which is kind of weak. When the wheel is off its only a few seconds with goo gone, but with it on its kind of a pain so I had to fish between spokes. Upon further inspection they scratched up in the inside of one of my rims pretty good... Granted the car isn't a show car, but when you see it or get in it, it's pretty obvious that it gets well taken care of. It's super clean, always washed, etc. Just kind of weak that they'd not take an extra second to not clean up, or just tell me "hey we scratched the inside of this rim man sorry". Sucks that I need to discover it. Overall... eh. It's better than Mavis but that isn't saying much. You go to mechanics enough that you learn who the good ones are, and typically you get what you pay for. I haven't bought tires enough to figure out where the good spots are, or it seems that there's a pretty wide open market waiting to be capitalized on. read more

Just purchased 4 tires, had a wheel alignment and oil change here. Chip was just a gem to deal with. It's amazing to me how rude and ugly some people can be in this Covid world we are now living in. Chip just smiles and is so very polite to these rude customers apologizing for STS's shortage of employees just as we are going into the winter months. We were away for a long weekend when we heard a clicking sound from one of our tires. It turns out we had run over a nail and needed to get our tire fixed. We drove our car to STS without an appointment, and the amazing staff took our car immediately and were able to patch the tire while we waited. After I made an appointment on a friday for a sunday , dropped the car at 9:00 AM for a wheel alignment only service . The Service desk confirmend that it will be done by 12:00 . Untill 12:45 I didn't get a call . I decided to go back to see what is delaying . Found the car on the lift and after another 15 min they brought it down and they said that my tie rods are seized and the couldn't do anything( 4 hours to wait ). I would recommend going to another service center where customer time and quality of customer support is better. Have being going to the same STS service center for over 15 years. But seems things are going to the downside. read more
