I…read morestarted Pilates to help rehab a lower back and sciatica issue since I didn't find much relief from physical therapy. The studio itself is lovely--the front desk staff is friendly and attentive, and the waiting area is cozy, clean, quiet, and peaceful. I also really appreciate that they keep doors and windows open for fresh air, especially during cold and flu season. A friend recommended private lessons with Carlo, and I've been extremely happy with him. He's an excellent instructor who took the time to understand my medical condition and tailor sessions that avoid aggravating my injury. Instead, he focuses on strengthening my hips, back, and glutes, and improving my posture. I'm learning so much and highly recommend his instruction and the studio.

Hello, my name is Uli and I'm a Spondy!…read more Jokes aside, my doctor recently told me that my leg and back problems result from a condition called Spondylolisthesis - a slipped vertebrae. He mentioned that strengthening my core would be my best bet to control for further damage and he also said that Pilates had shown some promising results in recent studies. Well, I'm not someone who distrusts the opinion of an expert and so I set out to find the best Pilates instructor in my area. I used the messaging feature here on Yelp to connect with 4 or 5 different Pilates studios in Marin: FitWise in Mill Valley was one of the studios and I swear that within a few hours of me sending the message, Ronda - the owner of the studio - gave me a call. I was immediately impressed by Ronda's knowledge about my condition and that comforted me immensely. Since then, I've seen Ronda for regular 1:1 Pilates sessions and I also attend group classes about twice a week. (One of my favorite classes is the matt pilates class as that one gives me a lot of inspiration for home exercises, which I have since integrated into my life as well.) Technical excellency aside, I would also like to give a shoutout to all the instructors and staff: they're all super nice and even though I may have had only a very small interaction with them, they all know me by name. Honestly, that makes such a difference and it makes me look forward to going to class. PS: I would like to encourage the men of Mill Valley to also join this studio. I sometimes feel a bit lonely among the largely female clientele ;-)

What makes it stand out immediately is that they teach classic Pilates, which is surprisingly hard to find these days. So many studios have moved toward trendier, watered down versions of Pilates, but Internal Fire stays true to the original method and you can absolutely feel the difference in the quality of the workout. Another thing that really impressed me is the equipment. They have top of the line apparatus that you just don't see in many of the other Pilates studios around Marin. Everything is beautifully maintained, professional grade, and clearly chosen with serious Pilates practice in mind. It makes the entire experience feel elevated and authentic. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, attentive to form, and clearly deeply trained in the classical method. The studio itself is welcoming, calm, and thoughtfully designed. You leave feeling stronger, aligned, and energized. If you care about true classical Pilates and excellent equipment, this is absolutely the place to go. I'm genuinely thrilled it will be my new neighborhood studio when I move to San Rafael.

I had a chronic hip infection when I started, which had secondary ramifications for how I walked and moved. Sharon is very intuitive and identified and corrected issues I hadn't even been conscious of. I since had surgery and treatment that eradicated the infection, but required reeducation in how to walk and move. I've had good physical therapists, but my work with Sharon restored my body in ways I hadn't thought possible. I can't recommend Internal Fire highly enough.

Though I've settled on an overall 4-star rating, there have been several visits where I'd not have rated it above 3-stars and once a single-star experience. But overall, if what you seek is a group exercise class, Club Pilates, with its clean, well-organized space and abundance of class offerings will suffice. A friend of mine owned a Club Pilates franchise and she described to me the most difficult part of the experience was hiring and keeping good staff. I imagine that remains a challenge, possibly because many of the best Pilates instructors might opt to work with a smaller class size, where they could more easily oversee correct movement and body-part placements. When a friend heard that I was going here she questioned how instructors manage these important Pilates concepts and I had to admit: Often, not at all. The key to a great experience here is twofold: find the class description you like then find an instructor you also like, who leads that class. This can be a challenge. The sign-up system is via the Club Pilates app and it's easy, but those who've already figured out the above tend to fill those classes quickly. Club Pilates is far from my idea of an ideal Pilates experience but sometimes good enough is okay too. That's exactly what I've found this Club Pilates to be and if I can ever get the classes and instructors I desire on a regular basis that opinion will certainly improve.
