Daytime Hollow is all light through the big windows, happy grown humans, beasts, kids sometimes. Daytime is for morning beverages and baked deliciousness and sandwiches I think later. I haven't tried the food after noon, Just the morning fare. And it's splendid. So many pretty people. I favor the darker Hollow, it's like the woods with owls about. And. Appropriately, I believe, I favor the Black Manhattan, for all the same reasons. Cozy, maybe a half dozen ish tables and as many bar seats. Maybe seven bar seats. My mind's eye is fuzzy. Enough to populate the forest but in a campfire kind of way. Those seeing to your food and drink are attentive, friendly, know many of the folks inside but not me. As I am furtive. The menu changes often and each and every dish I've sampled has been delicious. Price point is very reasonable for what's presented. It's a date night, an evening w friends, by yourself with a book (what's a book), all are welcome, all are comfortable. A speakeasy without a secret word, woods with friendly owls, off a dark but inviting street in what's an ever evolving Delhi downtown. Go.

Let me cut to the chase and say this was the most amazing food at the evening happy hour. Potatoes, fried and duck fat with a great seasoning, a mushroom dish, just the most flavorful and intense delicious bites ever. Several dishes just became a dinner of appetizers. Ambience was very pleasant. Great example of a Gastro pub dining. Friendly locals and a diverse crowd as well as servers. I loved it.

While there, they did come by to check in and were available by phone (when the phone worked) and answered emails. I emailed to follow up about the issue, but have yet to hear back. I also have yet to see a discount for all of the trouble we went through. I am walking away from this rental very irritated and disappointed. I think the overall issue could have been avoided from the start. There has also been zero follow through to ensure I walked away feeling taken care of. They have made me feel like they have my money so they don't want to deal with me anymore. I regret not staying at the Roxbury Motel where other friends were staying. That place looked awesome and all of my friends had great things to say about it.

Information from their website: https://www.stricklandhollowfarm.com…read more "Strickland Hollow is a working cider apple farm, artisan distillery and event space built in the 1800's nestled in the heart of the great western Catskill Mountains. Our Tasting Room, located at 70 Main Street, Delhi, showcases not only our spirits but the best wine, beer, cider and spirits from New York State, along with cooking classes and the occasional special dinner." I am writing a review of a cooking class I attended, "The Art of Making Sushi". Jerry Pelligrino wears a lot of hats. He is a farmer, distiller, and chef. After 20+ years in the hospitality industry, Jerry, came up to the Catskills to create Strickland Hollow Farms. The Tasting Room is the storefront where distilled spirits, ciders, beers, and wines exclusively from New York State are offered for sale. Conservas (food preserved in cans) are also sold there but they're not from NY. Attached to the left of the main shop is a room which can be converted to an ad hoc kitchen. That's where the cooking classes are held. Mise en place (putting in place) is a culinary term which means ingredients and tools are prepared and organized before the cooking begins. The success of this sushi making course was dependent on the preparation of the ingredients ahead of time. Fish (salmon, scallops, tuna) was cut into strips, pre-cooked shrimp (deveined with tail on) was available...halved avocados...julienned cucumbers...soy sauce...cutting boards...knives...makisu (rolling mats)...plates...sushi rice...everything was ready. A lot of work went into the preparation to make it easier for the students to learn how to make different types of sushi. Jerry usually focuses on teaching maki and nigiri sushi. This time, he also prepared gunkan maki zushi because I asked about it ahead of time. A brief demonstration of how to create each type of sushi started the class and then we were left to our own devices. I really liked this style because I think most of us were experiential learners. We had to do the thing to learn it, get a feel for it. Jerry also cut some chu toro (medium fatty tuna) I managed to get before the course in order to add it to what was already available. Yeah, I'm a geek and, Jerry, well, he is beyond accommodating. Overall, it was a really enjoyable course. We learned a lot. Jerry is a knowledgeable and engaging person. It won't be the last time I'll be taking a class at Strickland Hollow.

But, to be frank, if you're coming from the Southern Tier, Central NY, or the Mohawk Valley, you have to drive through a whole lotta nuthin' to get here. And if you haven't figured it out by now, sometimes pictures (on social media) don't tell you the whole story. Weaver Hollow does a great job of self-promotion on social. Well, good on you, sez I. But here's the deets you don't really get from Instagrammy goodness: Everything is in a 750ML bottle. Period. Hmm. Did I accidentally time travel back to 1990? Well, OK, bottling lines cost money, so do canning lines, even using a "gypsy canner" (I didn't coin the term, don't hate on me) is an operational cost. So, I get it. But.... Can I get a glass pour? No, you must buy the bottle. Can I get a taster to decide if I want to buy your pricey, whimsically named beer du jour? No, you may not? Ah. Could I buy a bottle, drink a glass, and have it legally resealed for my road trip home? LOLOLOL. What state are you in, pal? Oh, and the hours of operation scream either trust fund baby or someone who works 3 real jobs, and this is just a side hustle. I just happened to have moon and stars align with the free time I had to make this road trip. If you have the time, and a drinking companion AND the two of you can knock of a 750ml and hit the road after in a safe and sober manner, then absolutely, give this place a try. If you're seeking a brewery experience that isn't locked in the bootstrap days of yore, then pass 'em by. You'll note I didn't rate the beer itself. Months later, at home, I decanted Tempo (a saison), and pronounced it good. Actually, a 4.0 on UnTappd, so yeah, very enjoyable. But the effort it took to experience their craft, on their terms, means I'm not repeating this trek anytime in the foreseeable future.

The U-pick experience was fabulous, with a great variety of apples available. We picked both Gala and Honeycrisp apples -- the Honeycrisp were a clear fan favorite: crisp, juicy, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. The Galas were equally delightful -- did you know they're a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange Red? Originally developed in New Zealand in 1934, they've definitely earned their reputation as the ideal lunchbox apple with their sweet and mild flavor. Pick-your-own runs from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily, and the weather couldn't have been better for it. Afterward, we stopped into the farm store (open until 6 PM daily) and were impressed by the variety of apples and other local goods available. To top it off, we grabbed a cider donut (delicious, of course!) and checked out the newly rebuilt cidery and brewery. The space is spacious, modern, and very welcoming -- clearly designed with comfort and community in mind. Staff were friendly and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend a visit -- whether you're there to pick apples, sip a cider, or just take in the fall vibes. A lovely outing all around!
