An Incredible Experience and a Piece of Living History!…read more What an amazing experience riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad! We booked First Class and rode in car 630, a beautiful historic passenger car built in 1912. At 114 years old, this car is still going strong, although you definitely feel every bump and sway along the tracks! That's part of the experience and charm of riding a historic railroad. The First-Class accommodations were excellent. We had comfortable seating, complimentary pastries and beverages, and access to observation platforms. Being in the last car on the way out was especially memorable. Standing on the rear deck, watching the tracks disappear behind us while surrounded by the beautiful Colorado mountains, was easily one of the highlights of the entire trip. Our car conductor was wonderful! Friendly, helpful, and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. The staff clearly care about the railroad and the passengers. Unfortunately, the recent flooding damaged portions of the railroad, so our trip had to be shortened. The railroad was upfront about the situation and offered a partial refund. Despite the change, the experience was absolutely worth it. On the return trip, they moved the steam locomotive to our end of the train, giving us an incredible opportunity to watch this historic machine working up close. Seeing a steam locomotive in action, especially one that has been converted to burn recycled oil, was fascinating. I have a deep appreciation for both old and new technology, and this railroad represents the best of both worlds. It's amazing to see equipment more than a century old still operating and bringing enjoyment to people today. If we receive the partial refund, we intend to donate it back to help with the flood cleanup and restoration. Preserving this piece of American history is important, and we want to support the people working hard to keep it alive. A huge thank-you to the conductor, crew, and everyone involved in maintaining this incredible railroad. Even with the shortened route, this was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Highly recommended! We would absolutely ride again!

There was also a docent who was talking to people about the museum and the different things that were there. It was a cute little place and a great way to get out of the hot sun for a bit. It is also free to visit which was great! My only gripe is how warm it was inside. They don't have air conditioning so I wouldn't recommend visiting on a super hot day. They do seem to have heaters, though, so visiting in the winter would probably be fine. The museum itself is easy to miss. It's tucked behind the railyard and you have to go through the ticketing office for the railroad to find it. There are tracks you have to cross to get there so it is not entirely accessible for those with mobility issues. This is a great place to stop in and learn about the area. Definitely worth a visit if you have family in town.
