Jim inspected two homes for me this year (2014) and I was amazed at what he discovered and the level of detail found in his written reports (30+ pages, including photographs, YMMV). Jim's style is very calm, but astute and methodical. He reminds me of a detective you might see in a movie. He carefully assesses each house and goes through it step by step. He will put issues in context, and offers insights on what it might cost to fix a particular item. He will gladly share his discoveries with his clients as he explores each home... I was also amazed at his knowledge of new home construction. Anyone thinking of building a new home or buying new construction, needs to call Jim Vaughn at HomeAuthority first. His knowledge of the construction techniques, business and "culture" is extremely valuable... Jim is one of the most senior ASHI-certified inspectors in this area and is a nationally-known home-inspection instructor. Chuck is thorough, professional, and honest with his clients about the quality of the home being purchased -- the positives and the negatives. When he found out it was our first home, throughout the inspection, he mentored us on various preventative maintenance tasks we should do over the years to keep our home in good condition. The day after the inspection, we received a comprehensive digital report. Weeks after the inspection, when we had questions about an item Chuck found, he was more than happy to spend the extra time over the phone helping us talk through our various options. Check has an extensive knowledge of building materials and construction techniques and how they have changed over time. His knowledge is so extensive that he was even able to explain to us, in simple terms, the science behind some of the discoloration of bricks in the basement of one of the houses he inspected for us. If you're looking for a top quality home inspector in the DC area, Chuck Itte is the way to go.

I have no doubt the thoroughly detailed inspection report he provided was crucial in getting the seller to fix some less obvious (and expensive) plumbing issues. Several days after the inspection, he even followed up with me and answered all of my questions (I had a lot). We probably talked on the phone for 30-45 minutes. Yes, he's more expensive than other inspectors in the area, but he takes his time and is extremely knowledgable!

This gentleman was left alone in a listing of mine by the buyers agent and buyer (silly move on…read moretheir part), when I went to check on the home after the inspection he had created quite the mess. Covers for AC vents needed to be replaced, hardwood flooring needed to be restained in certain areas ( to conceal scratches in the flooring), wires were pulled out of walls and left on the floor, and after inspecting shower fixtures he failed to screw them back on completely. He even went as far as to remove shower rods & other staging props, and failed to put them back in place once complete. When he came back for day 2 of the inspection and I asked him about various items he had damaged/ left in disarray -he really had nothing to say, just a shoulder shrug. I've worked with plenty of home inspectors without an issue but this one was a nightmare. Moving forward I will require all buyers agents inform us of their home inspector choice prior to contract ratification, if this company is noted we will inform the buyers/buyers agent he is not allowed on any property listed by us. As a buyer if you plan on using his services I would suggest you not leave him unattended at the property, ensure that he does not case damage to the property; you will be responsible for paying for any and all damages once the inspection is complete. If you're a listing agent reading this, I would suggest you attend the home inspection to ensure he follows guidelines set by his board ( or maybe not allow him on your clients property). I've attached a few photos of the damage but there was far more I have not detailed in this review.

As much as I know, Pete was outstanding at catching what I missed, and what my personal knowledge/experience didn't forecast. NoVa/DC has been a seller's market in 2016/17, with a lot of disappointing properties and/or irresponsible sellers. Pete executed our inspection like a seasoned professional. Moreover, he saved us the headache and heartache of having to jump back into the frey of home buying by either needlessly walking away, or being sunk with an unforseen fix/improvement. Before our home inspection, we'd actually scheduled, re-schedule and had to cancel inspections on two different homes that we walked away from before inspection. From the inspection to their office operations, Home Scope is a professional outfit, and the the sole inspection company I refer to clients, friends, family, and anyone who sounds like they desperately need knowledgeable, efficient help in this market. Do you yourself a favor and hire an inspector like Home Scope who knows what they're doing, to protect yourself and your future.
