What a fun place to visit! The staff is super nice and they have so many drink options from beer to spiked seltzer and cider. If you're undecided, you can get up to 10-4oz glasses of any beverage to try. My friend and I got an assortment of beer, seltzer and cider. Some were better than others, but overall, we were happy with our selections. We sat inside, but there was also ample outdoor seating. The outdoor seating was by Smohk bbq, which unfortunately was closed today. There is no dedicated lot, but plenty of street parking. If you're looking for something different, I'd suggest giving Strangeways a try.

THE LUCKY CHARMS BEER!

Most creative brewery in all of Richmond - their flavors are all SO FUN and have such unique ingredients and inspirations. Don't leave without trying the infamous lucky charms beer - it's actually pretty solid! If you're a sour drinker like me, this place is going to hit on all cylinders - plus, the bartenders are all brilliantly friendly, and the place has plenty of seating and seems to always have some live music if you're feeling that or space to get away in the outdoor area. Will take literally anyone who visits me here if they are so amenable to it because it is worth showing off! Suitable for whatever you are looking for :)

RVA Burlesque Festival

I've been to this location twice. Once for a yoga class and another for the RVA Burlesque Festival. I think they have incredible events here. It's a really great space. It's located in what feels like an office park, but it has a nice outdoor space. The seating inside is also cool with the decor and the windows. The people who work here are incredibly nice. I love the back room with the big barrels. For the RVA Burlesque Festival, the barrels framed the stage very beautifully. I've only tried one drink here and it was the Sangria Sour. It was not for me. They seem to pour a huge amount of syrup/dye in it and it tasted a little too syrupy sweet for my liking. My friend got their cider (I think it's called something like Grandma's Apple Pie) and she really liked it. She said it tasted like Fall and was very comforting. I highly recommend visiting this spot for one of their great events.

Such a fun time at Strangeways Brewing! We got the 10 count beer flight to try many of their options! They have so many games to entertain your group as well. Cozy spot in Scott's Addition.

Old rail cars

Four of us had 30 minutes to spend here so we decided to stop and give this place a try. We all wished we had more time! This place is in a small strip mall type of building. There is parking on the side and the rear. There is also indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice this time of year. Most of the outdoor tables had umbrellas. We went in and were served quickly. They have different size pours so you don't have to commit to a large beer! We tried the pilsner and the Helles lager. The lady at the bar was really nice! The Helles beer was quite good! It is a very relaxed atmosphere and very cool place to spend some time. Plus there is an old railyard right behind it with some old cars there when we were there. Definitely will be back!

6 flight

Wanting to try a new brewery in Richmond, I found my way over to Strangeways on New Year's Day. I walked in at about 130 and the place was completely empty except for me and Scott, who was taking care of the bar. He helped me decide on a flight, which I appreciated, they had about 30 beers available. Most were sours and stouts, usually not my thing. I decided on six and he presented them to me in a round tray, it looked like a game of Wheel of Fortune. Probably the most memorable one I had was the Lucky Charms Weiss. Now I've had a Lucky Charms IPA before and it really tasted like marshmallows. This one was different, I could taste the milk and then the cereal separately in the beer. I liked the sour cherry cobbler. I've had a few cherry beers, and they're usually too tart or too sweet. This one had a nice balance of the too, it was a relaxing beer to drink. The Woodbooger, not my thing. It is classified as a Belgian brown ale, but to me it tasted like coffee. I'm sure it would be great for a lot of people, but not my style Also I like an IPA with some dank and the Furrowed Brow delivered. Really good beer. I was charged 3-5 bucks for each 3.5 ounce sample, not too bad. The vibe is a little psychedelic without being too off the wall. The place is a little off the beaten path, but it's worth going to.

Glitter Beer! I strongly dislike glitter but meh it was worth a shot lol really good beer!

Great beer,Great Service and very chill and quiet place to enjoy a beer. TONS of beer to choose from also. And yes that is glitter beer

Strangeways is aptly named. Their brewery originally popped onto my radar about a month ago when my beer friend traded me a box of Richmond-local beers. Their Uberlin Berliner Weiss was, by far, my favorite of the bunch. So light and lovely...and awesome label art! So when I decided on a whim to casually drive 3.5 hours down to Richmond, I knew a visit to Strangeways was a must. It ended up being our last stop of the weekend before heading home, but it was well worth going a little out of the way to see. Similar to many other breweries, their location is a little funky -- but it works for them. They're at the end of a strip mall away from downtown Richmond. If you're heading to The Answer from the city center, it's a good place to stop along the way. It's also not too far from the Scotts Addition neighborhood, which is brimming with breweries and delicious food options. The weather was gorgeous -- a warm and sunny early spring day -- so we walked inside, ordered flights, and chose a picnic table to imbibe. Keep in mind: You may not want to sit at the very end of the seat if no one else is sitting already...unless you want to induce a see-saw effect. I felt so hefty for a second. For the flights, you can choose any amount up to 10. I couldn't help myself with all their incredible options, so I picked six for my flight: - Smucker's Jelly Uberlin - Sour Cherry Cobbler - Red Sangria - Lücky Charms - Pink Lemonade - Razzle Dazzle Yep. Basically, you'll be in good company if you're not all about bitter brews and insane stouts. Although they do offer several stouts. My friend enjoyed them (and bought some bottles to go) but I stuck to my flight. Red Sangria, Razzle Dazzle, and Sour Cherry Cobbler were my standout favorites. I felt like the jelly fell a little short in potency, and the pink lemonade radler would have been better had I been sitting on a beach somewhere. I understand they also had fruit loop and jolly rancher beers in the past, and I'd LOVE to try those if they bring them back someday. It's worth taking a walk around the brewery before heading out. The operation is pretty large, and they have a diverse stock of beer merch in addition to their bottled to-go section. I only regret not purchasing that 6-pack of Uberlin. Oh well. I'm sure I'll be back one day soon anyway!

Great deal on a flight during Happy Hour. $3 per taster.

Despite the chill atmosphere, the sweet happy hour deals, friendly servers, and the large variety of beers, I just wasn't into Strangeways. While in RVA from out of town to explore the local breweries, Strangeways drew me in with the creative beer flavors and styles described online. The problem is the taste didn't really live up to the names and descriptions. My wife and I chose a flight of 10 beers. Styles ranged from IPA bitter to Lucky Charms sweet, and not one of the 10 stood out to me. Now, maybe I'm expecting too much, but with some of the local competition around the corner, visiting Strangeways might not be worth it.

If I lived in Richmond I would probably spend a LOT of time here. I enjoyed the feel of the brewery, the beer, and the people here. Oh, and they have awesome games in the back, plus lots of cool merch. I will say I felt a tad out of place later into the day when the backroom basically became a playground for the tiny humans that accompanied their parents for snacks and picnics. But I do appreciate them for being family friendly. They have some really interesting beers on tap; I will definitely come back and sample more... but I will probs skip the sours this time.

Started woth the loaded tots, typical bar/pub food but they knocked it out of the park. Then had the Biggy BBQ Mac Burger and lost my mind. This thing was so good, all the flavors from the pulled pork. BBQ sauce, patty, Mac n cheese bites, the bacon, fuse in your mouth then explode , freaking food orgasm in your mouth! Then had the Bourbon Maple Brown Butter cake to close it out and almost died. The bourbon cake is ridiculously good and intense, you WILL taste it. Overall, they deserve more than 3 stars, whoever rated less than 3 stars is insane.

Bartender was probably the busiest staff member, and he ran his bar efficiently, and with a smile. Overall the place just had a good, friendly vibe. If I have a critique, and I do, it's that the ranch served with the wings is pretty bad. I'm a bit of a ranch snob, and I didn't dip after the first wing. The brussel sprouts, however, were fantastic. Crispy without being burnt. Not too much Parmesan or balsamic glaze. The location isn't in my usual area, but I'll likely be back for a game, a beer from the absurd selection, but maybe I'll go blue cheese with my wings next time around...

My husband was pleased with the offerings of beer and enjoyed what he had. WE had Boat Cheese Curds with Marinara as an appetizer and they were quite good. We took desserts for later at the hotel: My husband's brownie was good and they packed the ice cream separately, so that made him happy. I had the peach cobbler, and while good -- I tend to like my peaches a bit more "peachy" ....they use lots and lots of cinnamon and allspice. The fruit was dark brown. They have a variety of glassware on hand in different sizes, so it's easy to create your own flight or to just pour a full pint. I had never visited a similar establishment in the past, so I had about 20 questions on how to operate everything. Here's the rundown: 1) Walk up to the cashier and give them your credit card. They will swipe it, give it back, and provide a card to access the taps. 2) Check the TV screen for the full digital listing of their available taps, or walk right up to the taps and read each individually. You can click on the beer name for a full description, including style, price per ounce, and abv. 3) Pick a glass, place the access card in the little slot, be sure you're on the main screen, and then pull the tap handle that corresponds to the beer. Each screen has two, with the taps beneath. Hold your glass at a 45-degree angle unless you're pouring cider, in which case it doesn't really matter. 4) Take your card, pick a seat or stand, and drink your beer. Repeat. 5) When you're ready to leave, walk back up to the cashier, choose your method of payment (I chose to just leave it on the same card...easy), select a tip, sign, and you're good to go. I tried six samples during my time there -- all about 3-4 ounces or less -- and paid $12 pre-tip. This is an excellent place to try a variety of beers. I imagine most names are recognizable...they carry stuff from Ardent and Isley, among other local and regional spots, but others aren't the easiest to find, such as Funky Buddha. RVA Draft Room is in the same open-format building as Zzaam, a tea place I forget the name of, and Sweet & Sassy BBQ. It's also centrally situated in Carytown. I didn't like the seating...I found it really uncomfortable. I think they need to invest in purse hooks and perhaps some stools with backs. I had to keep standing up to avoid hurting my back. Beyond the subpar seating, everything else was nice, and I think it's cool that they offer free tasting events as well. I'm sure I'll return at some point!

If you are looking for casual food options but also want a drink... this is probably your spot…read more There is Zzaam where you can get Korean food and then Sweet and Saucy if you want BBQ.... there is also a drink/dessert spot Kokee Tea where you can get bubble tea, or ice cream in a puffle cone. Basically you can sit at any of the spots each little restaurant gives you a number if you ordered anything and they deliver to your table. If you want beer you will need to see the attendant and get a card so you can self serve yourself beer, cider or wine. Supposedly they cap you at 64 oz but as long as you are not wasted of anything they say they can override it if you get to that point. As far as the spot goes.... it's very family friendly. Though I wish it was bigger than what it is. I also don't get why a lot of beer places are going for bar chairs and table tops instead of regular height tables and chairs. That would be my only complaint not the most comfortable. Though where the food options are there are normal tables and chairs but limited. Plus if you get there around noon half the tables are difficult to sit at due to the incredible sun that comes through... it would probably be better if they get some blinds. The draft room has games you can rent it seems like since the attendant oversees it. We brought our own since we weren't sure if they had anything to occupy our three and a half year old. As both my husband are beer, wine and cider drinkers you would think this would be heaven.... but we were both kind of disappointed with the selection. We drink just about all beer, wine and cider but we felt like the selection kind of lacked. Just to give you an idea of our favorite RVA breweries/cideries.... Strangeways, Hardywood, The Answer, Busky are probably our top places. I feel like if you are expecting something like any of the four I mentioned you may come out pretty disappointed. Though because of the food options and how it's casual, both my husband and I said we would be back since it's pretty family friendly. It's nice that it's not just one food truck option like most breweries or no options for food. So if you are hungry and are wanting to do some tastings definitely check it out. On another note... parking is kind of a pain since it's in Carytown... definitely stinks in the winter. My bet is when it gets nicer, traffic will really pick up since it looks like they have some nice outdoor seating!
