The food is quite good. But they advertised Mushroom Tartine on their socials and by the time we got there, around 5:30 on a Saturday they were already out. So on a busy weekend night, they ran out of their featured dish in less than an hour after opening. Friendly vegetarian restaurant, mostly but not entirely vegan. Some of their events can be very popular, but otherwise there's a comfortable amount of room for what is a cozy corner location. What I like most about this place are the non-alcohol cocktails, interesting complicated tastes without the drunken idiots. I hope it's an idea that catches on. Parking can be a challenge, you might want to take public transportation or bicycle. But, since you don't have to drink cocktails with alcohol, you can easily and legally drive home from an evening of drinking here. read more

Strange Town pairs amazing mixology with delicious (and usually pretty visually appealing!) eats. I've come here on a few occasions and have enjoyed my experience. They have outdoor (sidewalk) seating and all the times I've been here the weather has been pleasant so I sat outdoors. Their cocktails are lovely and inventive twists on classics. The food is impeccable. I have ordered and loved their nachos (with a flower perched atop no less) and their tomato tartine with cashew ricotta is live changing. I think their menu changes to accommodate what is seasonally fresh and fabulous but truly anything you order here is remarkable. I'm not strictly vegan and have completely changed my at home eating habits based on dishes here (ie: I try to only ever buy cashew ricotta because it's better to me than the dairy variety). Editing this review to include the insanely immature Instagram post made by this restaurant to "call us out" because of our dissatisfaction. If you just had good food and service, one-star reviews wouldn't exist. "Calling out" unhappy guests as "trolls" is definitely not a good look. Walked in excited to celebrate my mother in law's birthday and immediately noticed the pretty interior, but had to cut our visit short because of the abhorrent state of the dishes and treatment we received. We ordered the kimchi noodles, mushroom pate, nachos, and a bottle of wine. Our server initially brought us the wrong bottle of wine and began pouring until my partner pointed out it was the wrong bottle. She then took it away making a remark about taking it home for herself. Next, the kimchi noodles were utterly flavorless and oily. We sent the dish back after just a few bites. Hopeful for the mushroom pate, it was placed in front of us with fuzz hanging off each slice of bread. We didn't even take a nibble and returned the dish pointing out the issue. No words were exchanged from the waitress. Just left with the dish. No apology or anything. We decided we didn't want to wait for the condition of the nachos and asked to close the check with just the wine and noodles. Our server told us we have to pay for all the dishes, and the best she can do is "give 25% off the plates or her boss would have her throat." Even after arguing we didn't touch one of the dishes, she said this has happened before and her boss won't allow her to take the plate off. This experience was extremely upsetting and we absolutely will not return. Completely ruined the birthday celebration. Not to mention, my partner was seated with a cactus hanging into his hair. read more

I've been to Strange Town a number of times at this point and have yet to be disappointed. The first time I took myself out for a date (wine and reading). Such a unique, funky, and interesting space. Being a veg myself, I was delighted to try out a number of dishes on the menu. All so tasty! their wine list is amazing. I know very little about wine, but they seem to have crafted a remarkable wine list for a small restaurant. The waitress who helped me was very kind and let me take my time with the menu. I had to narrow it down to a few options since it was just me. She was super attentive, but let me have my space as well. It's in a great location on the East Side, walkable to a number of breweries, bars, and shopping. I enjoyed my time at Strange Town, reading my book and drinking wine. Highly recommend especially if you live on the East Side and/or are vegetarian or vegan. read more

My friend and I decided to try Strange Town recently for dinner. We went early and were able to be seated immediately. The space is quite small, but quaint. Outdoor seating is on the sidewalk. Our server was extremely enthusiastic and bubbly. We started with the Swan & Mercy cocktail, which they customized to be slightly less intensely alcohol forward for my friend. The menu did not mention that it was smoked, however, which can be a negative surprise. I liked it. We tried the tapenade, which was good, but the dates pushed it a little too much to the sweet side for our palates. There was also not nearly enough bread served with it and when we requested more, we were not informed that they were going to charge us $4. That's a lot for some bread slices. We split the Asparagus Panise and the special - a Lions Mane Congee with sea beans.We enjoyed the Panise, but the Congee was the star of the night - subtle and elegant flavors. We were not impressed by our bill. $95 and change for two drinks, an app and two small "mains" is a lot. I felt overcharged and annoyed at the end, despite the interesting food. Stopped in for dinner with my husband on a warm summer Thursday and had a lovely experience. Our server Maggie was such a delight. Fun, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Whenever we visit, we like to "play" with ordering whatever catches our curiosity. I ordered from Strange Town for the first time last night, and was pleasantly surprised. I am a meat eater. I only go to vegetarian/vegan restaurants when I dine with a friend that prefers vegetarian/vegan food. The list of food options on the menu was small, butbif you like wine, the wine list went on for days. I ordered the Forbidden Rice Balls and the Mushroom Tartine. The rice balls are made with bkack rice and served with a spicy and delicious kimchi puree, sesame marinated mushrooms that were chopped to tiny bits, but also delicious, and scallions. The Mushroom Tartine presentation was not what I expected, but the flavors exceeded my expectations. I expected flaky pastry with mushrooms in or over it, but it was more of a mushroom bruschetta, and since it was for carry-out, it was served as build-your-own, which I was fine with. Four slices of french baquette from local Amaranth Bakery were served with local mushroom amd shallot confit, a cashew cream cheese, and alfalfa sprouts for garnish. My order was ready just a few minutes past the time provided to me, and the dishes traveled well, so I was pleased with my first Strange Town experience, and I highly recommend both if the dishes I ordered! read more

Got a chance to try some yummy Rosé at Rosefest today from Syrange Town, and man was it so yummy and high quality. Strange Town organized the Roséfest with absolute finesse with so many great vendors in one single spot. The drinks greatly complemented the pizza from flour girl and flame. I can't wait to go back for an indoor dinning experience soon. Update : went back for drink and dessert and it was absolutely out of this world. I love this place! So cute and intimate. It's one of the few vegan options that provides no disappointing dish. The olive & fig tapenade was a nice way to start the meal. And they have a great variety of wines, including orange ones which are fun to try. We weren't hungry enough to order entrees, but can't wait to go back to try some and more of the vino. Stopped by for dinner on a Friday evening. We were seated and our waitress came and took our order. She was extremely nice and helpful, making the experience great. I really loved the aesthetic of the restaurant with all the plants. They were on their winter menu and we ended up getting 5 plates including the bread, crispy smashed potatoes, mushroom polenta, the cassoulet, and the daikon cakes. The potatoes were just okay but the daikon cake was amazing. We also got two desserts, the chocolate cake which was very delicious, not too overpowering, and baklava which was just okay. YES Strange Town ily! I've been wanting to check this place out for so long, and finally the hubby took me for date night! They are a plant-based bistro, but you certainly don't have to be a vegetarian or vegan to enjoy their food! We had a 6:45pm rez on a Wednesday night, which was worked out perfectly, as the place was otherwise full when we arrived. It's only small inside, maybe 6-8 tables as well as a bar you're able to sit at. I love the smaller and quaint size, it gives the place such a homey-feel. As does the decor and overall atmosphere. We were sat at a two-top and taken care of by a lovely server. She answered all of our questions (being the newbies we were) and gave us plenty of recommendations. She was also sure to tell us that it was 1/2 off women-owned bottles of wine (love that!), so we went with a bottle of white called Dandelion. Delicious. The menu is all made to be small-plates and shareables, so she'd explained anywhere from 3-4 sides would suit two people. Our picks: Olives to start that included tastes of orange peel, shaved fennel and garlic. The tacu tacu which was heirloom mayocoba bean + basmati cake, poblano coulis, avocado salad, sunflower sprouts, aji chili, and tortilla chip dust. And lastly, the sweet potato & kale chaat: curried chickpeas, herb chutney, tamarind date chutney, pickled mango coconut yogurt, and crunchy sev. I went here on business and this place is vegan so you know I was gonna try. The thing I liked about this place is that it's menu had a huge variety of cuisines. It had Asian inspired stuff as well as American and just a bunch of things, very random. I guess that's why they call it strange town. Anyway, the food that I ended up getting tasted sooo good! I stopped in to Strange Town before an event nearby and was impressed with the warm service and great food. I sat at the bar and tried their special drink - mulled wine. It was good and strong. I ordered the olives with orange peel, shaved fennel, and garlic. This was an assortment of olives and the flavors were nice and mild. I also got the butternut squash with poblano coulis, coconut yogurt, and pepitas, which was fantastic. The two small dishes together were perfect complements, too. Cool hipster new place that we discovered after finding out Allium was no longer. They've got LP records playing that night. Very similar look and feel with the succulents sitting by the windows and hanging plants. Staff were nice and professional. We ordered the eggplant involtini, pretty tasty with the olives and pesto. I am not obsessed over olives so the dish was pretty good for a non-olive lover. I loved the eggplant part and the backsmell of this dish made it tastier. I recommend ordering this dish. Also tried aloo gobi chaat, which was my favorite. Best way I could describe this is a mild version of an Indian dish. Less spicy but still flavorful. I liked the texture from the cauliflower try this! Third dish, the butternut squash was chewy. The flavor was decent, and I was not fond of the amount of chewing effort. It was challenging to cut the squash pieces with a bread knife and my teeth. Maybe it was a defective dish out of the many butternut squash that have been ordered, so depending on which one you get it could be good. There is potential in this dish and could definitely be improved, in my opinion. Also, I would recommend eating it if you want to save your money, as no refund is given. Or skip ordering this altogether. Rebounded by ordering a fourth dish, the mushroom tartine, I loved this. If you like mushrooms and bread get this right now. And it's gluten free. Milwakee is a great town for hidden gems. My wife found this vegan bar on LaFayette Place. This low key part of town is where Strange Town is. A quirky terra cotta building, the small space has a bar and about six tables. We ordered a cocktail with the mushroom egg rolls and the potato croquettes. All was yummy. This place is good. They add a mandatory 20% tip. For two with drinks, small plates and tip is around $80. read more

I just went with my friends and was super excited to go to an all vegan restaurant. I was very disappointed with what I ended up with. We got there a half hour after they opened and they were already out of over half the menu. The waitress was rude and didn't remember to put in half the order. This is such a cute place with really great vegan food! Strange Town definitely does not disappoint, especially for non-vegans! We started with the carrot queso. I loved this! It was a great dip, and the salsa it came with was also delicious. I also had the eggplant caponata as a torta, and it was this delicious sandwich with a spicy eggplant mixture and cashew cheese. I wish there was a little more filling, since the bread was so big, but it was still really tasty and came with a nice little salad. My friend had a beet salad which was also a great lunch option! Ok, this may be my new favorite place. The vibe here is fantastic. Funky hygge is what we decided was the best description. Cool and moody blue and red lighting, tons of plants, historic building, big windows...there's no bad seat in the house. It's a tiny restaurant, so make sure to make a reservation. We had a 7:30 PM on a Friday and it was packed. We got the hummus plate and the mushroom matar- SO YUMMY. Great flavors, textures, spices- yum. We also got the elderberry creme brûlée for dessert and it was a perfect way to end the meal. I wish they served decaf coffee but I understand that for a small places that's normal to not offer coffee drinks. You don't have to be vegan/vegetarian to enjoy this place. We will be back- well done, Strange Town. P.S. Only one small complaint- servers were nice and informative but they need to be better at pre-bussing tables. A beer glass could have been cleared 3 times when our server(s) came by and chatted with us and they never grabbed it. We also had to ask for something to be boxed up vs. them offering when they saw our plate off to the side. They also had numerous opportunities to up-sell and didn't. There were four of us and we went to eat, not drink. (HOWEVER, their drink menu is fantastic--lots of variety and creative items. So: they deserve five stars if you'd like to imbibe. Go for it.) If you want to eat though, wait until you've had a few and the food might be okay. After all you've got to eat something, right? A good example of underwhelming and odd cuisine: we had a beet dish. The beets were roasted, dehydrated, then rehydrated...(Or were they dehydrated, rehydrated then roasted?) Whatever the order, they were murdered. I did not know you could kill a beet. We had a salad of tomatoes, zucchini and greens. The tomatoes were exquisitely fresh and real, like they haven't tasted since my childhood, in the 1960s. Unlike the other salad ingredients, their fulsome flavor was not ruined by the dressing, which was indistinct, kind of bland, not interesting. I would have preferred the other ingredients plain. I apologize, but I can't remember the ingredients. All I know is that I don't ever want to have that taste in my mouth again. (Please note that I have eaten delicacies and gourmet foods in numerous countries, on four continents, and I'm neither a philistine, nor a snob.) Six dishes, a dessert and one canned drink came out to $140 (including a mandatory 20% gratuity.) Ouch. Way too much for the smallest of not-enough-to-share dishes. Never have so few, paid so much, for so little. Again, go for the drinks and the atmosphere. But eat beforehand. You will leave hungry, and probably without an appetite. read more

I recently visited strange town in Milwaukee and was super thrilled to come here as I am exploring vegan restive lately. Came here with couple friends and we ordered a few drinks to start off. They were out of a few ciders but we ended up getting one of the ones that was in the menu from Spain. It had a unique taste and quite different from the ciders you have in US. Give it a go. The wines I thought were very expensive given the amounts they served. My friends got some and they seemed to enjoy it. Since it's a shared plates place we got a few items to start with and see how it went from there.. the hummus was really good, I got the mushroom polenta which sounded really amazing but tasted a bit underwhelming.. I think it could be improved by adding perhaps truffle oil to it. I think their CBD Kombucha is famous here which my friends tried too. Strange town had very different kind of music.. at one point we felt like we were sitting in some Warner Brothers studio hahaha! I am gonna come here again and recommend trying this out! read more

I am so excited to see the former-Allium space filled with such a neat restaurant! Since they opened, I have been there twice for dinner (once on their opening night.) The space still has the basic comforting feel of Allium, but with a fresh and clean spin. The new floors and bar detail add a lot of simple charm that gives the new restaurant its own vibe. Things beyond the remodel that I love so far include the food, the drinks and the service. So pretty much everything! Right away on opening night, I was amazed at how quick and friendly the service was. Both times, everything we ordered came out timely and were delicious. As the menu is almost all gluten free and vegan, I was excited to welcome them no matter what. But they went above and beyond with creative and yummy dishes. Some things I recommend (as of now) include their olives, their kombucha aperitif, and the arincini. The waitress told us that the menu would be changing regularly, so I'm excited to see what else they cook up! Can't recommend Strange Town enough! LOVED everything about Strange Town. Incredible service (even more outstanding since at the beginning we had a crabby baby with us). Great drink selection. And in spite of me enjoying meat, I didn't miss it because the quality of their food and variety of flavors made me feel like absolutely nothing was missing. I love the decor, very warm and inviting; just a cute spot I could see myself even coming alone for a glass of wine and a little appetizer. I will definitely be back.
