Some of the worst customer service i've experienced in a long time. Not sure if it's a HYVEE thing or if it's just the state of the workforce nowadays. I clipped a digital coupon on their app and it didn't take so I had to go through the customer service line and the lady at the desk was the most unhappy looking unfriendly person I've ever encountered. We're visiting from Tennessee and needed some wine so we stopped at this location. The exterior is nondescript and not very welcoming, but when I went inside I was totally surprised. The store is big and airy. Floors are buffed shiny, all shelf products are neatly blocked (cans brought to the front of the shelves and turned so the product can be seen). The produce department was beautiful, a more than adequate wine selection was in the store and the seafood counter was impressive; it didn't smelly fishy which is a hallmark of freshness. And the prices were reasonable. This will definitely be our first choice in shopping while vacationing in Portage. read more

Self checkout is by far the most annoying system with have to get assistance on almost every item scanned. Making a quick in and out, turn into the longest waiting game. Simply moving an item into another bag triggers the system to Freeze everything your doing, and force to wait for assistance. Now your in line waiting for assistance. For something that would normally take 5/10mins, turns into an annoying experience after about 20mins. read more

I do most of my grocery shopping here cuz the prices are good and they have a nice meat selection. They usually have a great deal of sales too. The bakery has definitely gotten a lot better as well as the deli selection. As long as they keep their prices lower than Wiseways I'll be coming back. read more

At 2pm the Deli (hot food side) was pretty disgusting. I stopped after work to pick up a quick dinner & it looked like it had been neglected the entire day. There wasn't any thing behind that glass that looked fresh. read more

never been a fan, and by the lack of reviews, probably not too popular. dirty, overpriced, takes too long to shop checking for expired products, no self check out. nearby meijer, aldi, costco get my business. the biggest detractor is the gun range adjacent to the store. hobart police and 911 claim to not answer shots fired calls in the area. when ,not if a shooting happens here , and it is inevitable , it is only a tradgedy waiting to happen. read more

To start, the Stracks in this area are plain expensive places to shop. I will avoid going here when I can. Usually, though, I get stuck coming here in the late evening or if I am in a hurry. My biggest issue is not the pricing, though. It is the atmosphere when I go to checkout. Some of the older women working the register here really grind my gears. They gossip about each other, hey curse, and they talk over/ignore customers. They make you feel like your are interrupting their conversation if you try to address them. This never ceases to amaze me, as these are grown women behaving this way. I worked at a grocery store for a few years. If I behaved like that, I would no longer have had a job. A couple times, I have found myself verbally correcting the rudeness of employees. I am a non-confrontational person, but the lack of respect some of these people have shown has gotten me to that point. This wasn't one occasion either. It has happened dozens of times. read more

Not a fan of reviewing grocery stores but I would give this strack and van till for the area. It's clean, employees are friendly, and the prices are decent. Deli/Seafood is nice they have a lot of selections in the deli department and the salads that they make are above average. Nice selection of lunch meat and cheese too. Seafood department is a little smaller but do have a nice selection. Bakery is small but they do have good cakes and doughnuts and there stuff is fresh. Big produce department normally priced higher. Good selection of frozen fruit though. Meat department is large a lot of good items and decent sales. But is still overpriced in some areas. Dairy and Frozen are above average. They have a lot of items I don't find at other stores and prices are good. Beer and wine is really above average. It has the best selection out of any grocery store in the area and rivals some liquor stores that's why it got a extra star from me. In general I shop here because it's convenient and the prices are decent. They have a great selection of items that I can't find at other stores in the area and the store is very clean. The only thing I wish this store had that some of the other stores in the a area had would be sushi other than that the store is great! read more

I've shopped at this location several times and it used to be the better if the 2 stores in Hobart. Used to be. The last 3 times I've purchased milk at this store, it has went bad before its sell by date. I chocked it up to maybe a temperature change in my fridge. This list time, however, I bought the same brand of milk from two different locations - this one and the store on old ridge. Lo and behold, the gallon from this store is rancid today, 2 days before its expiration. I've never had issues like this before, so it has to be how they're storing it in that store itself. The store has other issues as well: never enough lines open, produce that goes bad much too quickly, and they have a smaller variety of bargain brands since their remodel. The milk issue is really just the straw that broke the camel's back for me, quite honestly. I'm envisioning all of the money I've wasted on produce, dairy, and other perishables simply because they spoil more quickly than they should. I literally could have thrown that money in the garbage and gotten the same result. I'll be traveling to Meijer down the road from now on, or at least until Stracks commits to actual change instead of just saying they've changed. read more

Stracks has a good bakery and decent chicken for catering if you're having a party.The tuna steaks from the seafood dept. are good too. However if you're needing to do your grocery shopping stick with Meijer in Portage or County Market in Gary(if you want to travel there). Stracks prices have really skyrocketed over the years. And I used to be a regular shopper there. Case and point; I recently had a craving for strawberry Newton cookies and since I was in the store anyway doing my banking, I decided to see if by chance they had them on sale. They were on sale alright, 2 for $7.00! Meijer frequently has the same cookies on sale 2 for $4.00. They must need to pay for all the remodeling they've been doing! read more

I normally shop here as they are clean, always have what I need in stock, and are fairly priced. Today I experienced a very poor customer service situation in which I was very unimpressed and honestly quite offended. There was a machine malfunction during checkout and the cashier was very rude about it, we figured she was new so we didn't let it bother us much. She was very snappy telling us to swipe the card again over and over while she still needed to press cash/ debit on the screen. The total was 126.60 but the charge screen for the card said 170$. She kept running it about 4 times (got declined every time) until we told her that we thought something was not right because it was overcharging us. She said it was our card and not her fault. We had her put in the correct amount and the card finally went through. We called after we left to alert the management that we believed there was a machine malfunction and they immediately got defensive saying we were trying to blame the cashier and that it was our fault somehow( we didn't even mention how she was being rude because we didn't want her to be reprimanded) After a long argument about how we were not trying to blame the cashier and instead trying to tell them the machine was charging us incorrectly, the woman said she needed to go very rudely and hung up. Would 10/10 not recommend. Very poor customer service. Will not be returning. read more

The store has greatly improved since the remodel. I shop here often since Key Market/Central went to hell. My only complaint is that you definitely need to pay attention at the register. I have issues with sale prices not reflecting properly at the check out often. The store is clean. There is always staff present in nearly every department making sure everything is fresh. All employees are friendly and willing to assist with anything you might need. read more

Now that stack and Van til have bought out all the local competition their prices reflect it. Meat selection is small and way too high priced. National brand items are much higher than they should be but since they are their own competition, they also own ultra, they can charge anything they want. I suggest shopping at meijer instead who's prices are much lower. Or do what I do...hit stracks only for sale items and get the rest at meijer. read more
