What keeps me coming back to my neighborhood Strack's instead of driving to Whole Foods for better produce is their level of customer service and friendliness; which is exemplified by one of their employees Nathan. I'm not kidding when I say the guy is literally everywhere and does everything at this place; and for the first month I thought they had twins working at the store. Every time I go shopping at Strack's I see this man welcoming customers with a smile and making them feel like they're apart of a community; greeting people by name and asking how a recipe turned out that they were shopping for. I'll be going down the aisle and see him stocking shelves and helping people reach things they can't get to; then turn a corner to see him opening up another check out aisle so people don't have to wait in line. And this guy isn't even a manager; so that speaks volumes to me in the level of commitment and pride this store takes in training and treating their customers right. And this is everywhere: From the butcher who took the time to go cut soup bones for me after I couldn't find them in the display to one of the ladies in the deli department giving suggestions on new cheeses they just got in that would pair great with the meat I bought. All in all, I have nothing but positive things to say about this store. read more

Please note that the deli meat sandwiches are made with NO GLOVES ON. Please see the picture posted of the staff assembling these sandwiches with bare hands. This staff member also has jewelry on her hands- jewelry that probably has never been washed and is also touching the meat, bread, everything on the sandwich. The health code for food preparation does not require gloves to be worn ONLY IF the food will later be cooked, thus killing bacteria. Stracks was absolutely crazy today. Spent 30 minutes in line waiting for my turn at the cashier. It was like a walmart at the atore, too many people not enough cashiers. God forbid a manager jumps on the register or loads some bags to make the line go faster. It was ridiculous and really thinking of going to another store for groceries. read more

Very clean store and well staffed. Open decent hours for a small town. One MAJOR problem I've noticed shopping here for the past year is the shocking amount of items that were either expired or VERY soon to expire, like the next day. Items that I've never needed to check before, like canned goods, all need checking. Every single item I buy here is date checked. Today while shopping I found the following expired items today: March 13, 2016 Tropicana OJ - expired Feb 21, 2016 BreakStone sour cream - March 14, 2016 Frozen Beafsteak sandwich - Feb 16,2016 OM bacon - March 12, 2016 Packaged sliced ham - March 07, 2016 There were a few other items so close to expire, I had to dig deep back and check every package for a later expire date. Shopping here takes longer than it should due to the need to check close to everything purchased. In the past, I've bought expired or close enough to expire dates, I've had to throw out the unopened item. It was OM Bacon which usually has a 2-3 month shelf life if unopened. Another disappointing thing I've come across many times is sale items are out of stock. Simple items like Heinz Ketchup. This is not a widespread problem, but is a bummer when it happens. Save your receipt, because you can return food items should you ever find something expired, and the staff there is very nice when returning food. Dec 8, 2016 UPDATE: Had to drop off one star because of the continued expired food being sold. I do my best at checking expiry dates on each item put into my grocery cart. The few items I didn't think I needed to check or forgot to check, we're all EXPIRED! Will need to return 3 items today: Jar of pickles expired Nov 16, 206 Kraft cheese expired Dec 1, 2016 Daisy sour cream expired Nov 28, 2016 Being visual impaired, sometimes it's hard to find OR read the expiry dates on all the food, makes shopping way less enjoyable and sometimes a chore. This is one of the nicest grocery stores I've ever been to. It's never crowded unlike other Strack's I've been to and the music is at a nice ambient level, again unlike other ones. The organic food is reasonably priced and they have a big variety of it. The produce, deli and bakery section is great along with the salad bar. Very clean! My husband are RV'ing for 2 weeks in Cedar Lake, IN, & looked for the local grocery store. Strack & Van Til was the closest to us, so off I went. Wow! It is a grocery super store! The offerings in every dept are many, & the people that work there are helpful & gracious. For instance, they have an amazing bakery dept, & offer huge trays and one pound packages of butter cookies with colored sprinkles. I was interested in them, but only if they were chewy, not crispy. I asked a woman behind the counter about that, & she immediately reached into the display case & gave me one to try. I took a small bite, & wanted my husband to try one, so I began to wrap it up to take home to him. She wouldn't have it! She gave me another cookie to take home to him. Above & beyond service! Their fresh seafood & meat departments are full of choices, & the produce dept was huge & alive with vibrantly colored fruits & veggies. I look forward to shopping here again! read more

I've had no issues going there. Has been clean and friendly. Good ole Wilco spot. Decent prices for a grocery store. Can't really complain.

As a lifelong NW Indiana resident, I've been to my fair share of Stracks locations my whole life. When the Cedar Lake store opened I was so happy, and they certainly did not disappoint me! The store is exactly one mile from my house, but even if it were further away I'd still shop there over any other grocery store any day. The staff is absolutely excellent, from the deli to the shelf-stockers, cashiers, and baggers. Even the employees who get the carts from the parking lot are really friendly! The store is well stocked and always clean with no clutter, making it really easy to maneuver my usually very full shopping cart wherever I need to go. It has a small town feel but a big-chain store product selection. The hours are great too, but the reason I keep going back is the stellar customer service! Keep up the good work! read more

The Strack and VanTil's in Cedar lake is a nice store, BUT what were you thinking when it comes to the check out lanes? The need for your cashiers to also bag and to have no easy place to set things causes wait times to be twice what they are at most SVT's. I watched today as the cashier whose line I was in struggled to bag a very large order. It took WAY more time than it would have at any other SVT's and I almost walked out. There is NO place for them to easily sort things through so that bagging becomes and easier task and this is not the first time I've watched the cashiers struggle. This seems to be a time waster for your patrons and not the typical service one has come to expect from a SVT store. The change area( below the belt) are confusing for seniors and very off putting. I hope you change the whole check out system to those you have in other stores. Even Walmarts Ciircular bagging system makes more sense tan the lanes that have been installed at the Cedar Lake SVT read more
