First several times we went here the food was awesome. The owner is great, his family is super nice. But, The last time we went it was under cooked. Cheese wasn't melted in Chile Rellano, Cheese was still kind of hard and shaped still, he put sliced onions on top of Chile rellano. We love this place in the past. They were one of the reason's we moved to Cedar Lake. But like i said our last visit was very disappointing. I think it was a different cook there. I wan t to go back so bad, but I'm afraid of it being that cook. Got to look inside before entering i guess. I know it was probably a one time thing. But don't let me discourage you all. They are great people there. We still shop in the store. We always see the kids with their 2 wheel carts getting items from their storage when i pass in morning. I work in the area so I stop at least once a week for take out so I can eat in my car. Well today I stopped and ordered 2 tacos along with a can of soda. As I was waiting for my food, I checked my receipt as I was scanning it I had noticed a .75 take out charge. I was shocked to see this and especially during Covid. Bare in my mind that I wasn't dinning in. I've been too other restaurants during the pandemic for take out and I've never been charged. This leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. We had Enchiladas, Beef Burrito, Steak Chimichanga, and Tamales. Each was excellent! Went with my family for a nice authentic Mexican meal My husband had a carnitas burrito and he loved it! My son and I both had asada tacos and they were spot on! The service is great here, our waitress is a sweet gal with attention to detail. We shopped at their attached grocery store for some meat prior to heading out takes us a while to get there, about 35 minute drive, but worth it :) The prices are reasonable as well. I've been looking for a Mexican store since I moved to the area. I was extremely excited when I saw their advertisement in a local calendar. Stopped by this weekend and wasn't disappointing. They store is small, clean, and inviting. It's no packed to the ceiling like other small stores, which I hate. The owner overheard my wife and I talking about how nice everything was and she talked to us for a little while and explain about the fresh food, tamales, carnitas, etc. Extremely pleasing. Once the holidays are over I'll be back to try all of that stuff that looked delicious. Also, I'm a fan of Goya products. I was surprised on how this smaller store had more Goya products than Mexican places 3 times their size. read more

Some staple ingredients are not made by hand, like the tortillas, and some staple dishes are Americanized, like the rice, which is the reason for the three stars but it's the best Mexican restaurant in cedar lake/st. John/schererville area. They recently started serving alcohol so that's a plus! Smaller parking lot but there is also street parking. You can enter through the grocery store in the front or the separate entrance on the side. There is only seating for about 8 parties of four so be ready to wait a little. The decor is worn and needs updating and there is a lot of foot traffic in and out for pick up orders. No hostess, seat yourself. There are waitresses though. They serve to go but don't deliver. Started as any meal with homemade chips and 3 different salsas. Full drink menu. After I ordered, I watched the cooks through the window opening. It was all made fresh no microwaving. Second time we went for lunch, first time was good food and great service.. As soon as we were seated we got drinks and chips and I hit the men's room to wash up. As I washed up one of the kitchen staff exited the water closet, by passing the sink to properly wash up and headed for the kitchen. As I sat back down I watched him place his apron back on and handling large stainless Steele trays of food around. We decided this was not worth the possibility of a good born illness and left. We use to love this place. It was the best food in town. Since their move to the larger location quality and customer service have dropped tremensously. And prices have skyrocketed. We recently ordered food to go and half our order was missing when we got home. I called hoping to rectify the situation but I was met with snarky attitudes and lame excuses. To make the matter worse the food we did receive was burnt and the servings were so skimpy we had to get a second meal from a different restaurant. I've lived in Cedar Lake for 12 years, and have sadly seen several Mexican restaurants come and go, but La Gaviota has stood the test of time because of authenticity, excellent food and awesome customer service! When they moved to the bigger place next door to expand, it got even better! They have a full restaurant in the back and kept the grocery store in the front, and I have never ordered anything that was less than excellent! They always get my take-out orders perfect (even the huge orders when my family visits) and that's a big deal to me.
