Oh boy, do I love visiting Strack and Van Til when I'm cruising back to my hometown! Sign me up for goodness, because nothing beats grocery shopping while waiting for my seafood to be cooked. Talk about multi-tasking! I mean, who needs a personal chef when you have fried catfish sizzling away right before your eyes? After I've made my seafood sacrifices to the food gods, I waddle over to the prepared foods section, where those buttery mashed potatoes and green beans await. I swear, those mashed potatoes came from someones grandma versus the store kitchen. Oh, and the prices? They're so good I almost feel guilty! It's like finding money in my winter coat pockets (compared to Indy). I leave feeling like I've hit the grocery jackpot! I can't help but visit them over and over when I'm on the road. It's practically a ritual at this point! And don't even get me started on the stuff I couldn't find in Indy (Marsh closed). There isn't anything fancy about this place. It's old, but kept clean. I'm having a ladies day today and just went to fill my cannoli shelves from the two boxes that I bought at Strack and Van Hill on Broadway last week because Jewel was out of them and Stracks is my store of last resort because I have gotten several items from them that is Still rotten open. I don't know how they stay in business. As soon as I open both boxes of the shelves a rancid oil smell hit me. Both boxes were expired from February of last year. How does a store get away with putting out expired merchandise? I will never shop there again. read more

Although I love the store, I am afraid that I will not be visiting this store in particular. Twice I have gone back to the bakery and have seen the manager speaking very discreetly towards the staff. One middle aged woman who seems to have developmental disabilities (maybe autism) was being spoke to in a manner that you do not even speak to your dog that was. She was also cursing at her. I feel bad for the other workers and would not blame them if they quit... at least give them the option to transfer to a different area of the store. How can management allow people to be verbally abused?? I will drive a little further to go to a different store and advise any other frequent shoppers to do the same... at least until changes are made. This Strack & Van-Til has some of the most kind, hardworking, and helpful staff I've ever had the pleasure of encountering! They have a vast selection of groceries, great prices, discounts, and are always trying to help the community out by doing little things like taking food donations to help those in need, and offer a community billboard for customers to freely advertise appropriate material on. I love this Strack and Van Til. The employees are always very friendly, they have an awesome bakery section, and it's always a very clean store to visit. What I really like too is that the bathrooms were very clean and to exit the bathroom there's a little foot wedge for you to get the door open so you don't have to touch the door handle with your freshly washed hands. I'm pretty sure every public bathroom needs one of these, and I'm pleased to see Strack's using it. The selections of food items are very vast, and I always like having different options and choices. :) read more

I've been going to Stracks for about 5 years and have never had a bad experience. Recently went to the one in Winfield and found it necessary to ask for assistance. A woman , who I believe was named Anita, was very pleasant and made sure that my needs were taken care of. Stracks should be proud to have her as an employee. read more

I stopped in yesterday to purchase a few items. I bought a small container of the Castelventrano olives from the "olive bar". I love these olives and buy them whenever I see them so I know how they taste. These olives are so salty (straight up table salt!) I can't eat them! And I like salty food but these have been ruined! I won't be taking a chance on any more "olive bar" items. read more

My daughter is getting married today. They're getting married at the JP, and I wanted to make it special for her. When I found out she didn't have flowers for today, I went to Strack and VanTil on Broadway in Crown Point. There, the floral manager took a simple bunch of flowers, trimmed them, arranged them and made a beautiful boutique for my daughter. I really appreciate that she did that on a moments notice. The bouquet is beautiful and will help my daughter look even more beautiful on her special day. read more

The old lady cashier Gabby was very rude to me for no reason. Literally did not say a word to me the whole transaction. She didn't even tell me my total, I had to look at the pin pad to see for myself. OH excuse me, she did finally say something to me at the end. After snaching my receipt from the machine, she barely extended her arm to give it to me, and as I reached to grab it, she rudely says "I CANT REACH YOU!" Other than that horrid experience, I love shopping at stracks here. They have good sales every once in a while, and for the most part stays stocked up on sale items to prevent from running out... The first thing I want to comment about is the staff, they are so polite and attentive, from the greeter to the bagger. I especially appreciate the deli staff. They are all so accommodating and helpful. The woman who seems to run the kitchen in the back, is always helpful to the customers and often comes out back from the kitchen to inform her coworkers of what will be available. She seems to make the whole hot side of the deli counter run smoothly. The cashiers and baggers are also great , whenever there is a price discrepancy they are quick to check and fix. I'll preface this review by saying, I avoid this store unless dragged along by my daughter. After her visit here last week, I don't think she's going back either. Prices considerably higher than Jewel. Store is just unorganized and weirdly so. Produce is dismal especially when I compare it to Jewel. I will say, the cashier we had this time was pleasant and usually the ones we get are rather curt. I think a lot could be improved especially for a long established company. read more

Nicest employees ever!!!!!! Today I stopped at this location to pick up a few things. I love their fire engine kids cart because my son doesn't refuse to sit in it, and I can keep him contained for a little while. I drove around the parking lot to see if I could find one of these treasured carts in one of the cart corrals, but I didn't see one. When we entered the store, not one kid cart was availableAs I looked around to see if maybe someone was returning one, an employee (I think maybe the front end manager) asked if I was looking for a kid cart. I said that we were, and she told me she would get us one. A couple of minutes later, she returned from the parking lot with one of the coveted carts!!!! Apparently, I had not seen it when I drove through!! After we found everything we needed, the cashier and bagger were very friendly. The bagger even went to the customer service desk and got a couple pieces of tape to make sure our box of donuts stayed closed!! I didn't even ask!! Love it!! I will say that I am disappointed that I can not do all of my shopping at stracks. It used to be the only store I shopped at, but then something changed and the prices went up. Although I love this store, I simply can not afford to shop there on a regular basis. I can only afford to go there for specialty items on rare occasions. read more

This is seriously the most poorly laid out grocery store I've ever been to. I keep trying to figure it out but after a year and a half its still a frustrating experience every time I go in there. I would much rather drive farther and go to any store that doesn't seem like it was organized by my 2 year old. School supplies in the middle of breakfast foods, bread on the cards aisle, eggs in a center aisle refrigerator where meats should be located! Just to name a few ridiculous ideas they have. It takes a hour to shop there vs the 20 minutes it should take, on the bright side Fitbit users you can get your steps in while shopping because you'll have to go back and forth 15 times through the store to find the scotch tape! read more

I love my Strack's! Angie and Chris in the deli, Erin in produce, and then getting walked out by Ashley just makes my week. There are a quite a few more awesome people, but the names are escaping me at the moment. The staff are very friendly, the prices are good, selection is great. read more

This is where I do most of my shopping for about 6 years now. I work 3-11 shift and occasionally need to stop after work. I get there by 11:25pm. Tonight I had a unusually rude checkout woman. When I got into her line at about 11:40, with about 10-15 items, she was wiping down the conveyor belt. I waited until she was done, which was a bit awkward since she never looked up or acknowledged me. Then I said, "I hate to put anything on the belt" (now that you just cleaned it). She scoffed and didn't speak, just put out her hand as if to say- "just hand things to me". So I did. She was so very clearly mad or annoyed or both that I was actually taken aback. The only words she spoke to me AT ALL were "any coupons?" Even when she handed me the receipt it was with hostility. Older lady, very long brown hair & glasses.
