This garage had everything! It had a place for cars to come in, a place for cars to go out, and…read morelines on the ground to show you where to park! It even had a counter that showed you how many spots were available before you pulled in! When I pulled in, I received a piece of paper. When I left, I scanned the piece of paper, and scanned my credit card, and it charged me the exact correct amount! It was all automatic, and I did not have to speak to or deal with an attendant! Isn't the 21st-century great? We were there on a Thursday afternoon, and the downtown area was definitely hopping. We had no trouble getting in or out. The garage was conveniently located near to the downtown area. Coincidence? I think not. This is such a great garage I'm sure that when the age of George Jetson comes, this parking garage will be perfect for flying cars. Except the entry and exit will be at the top.

Yes, I'm reviewing a parking garage. Why? 'Cause it's great. The first hour is free (with a…read morecaveat, later). That is *PERFECT* for someone passing through for lunch. It's large enough that I've never found it full (same caveat). It's incredibly convenient to reach coming from the north or south. There are street-level exits onto Rankin and Walnut, and apparently a bridge over to the Civic Center on Haywood. The Rankin exit is a block and a half from plenty of good food and coffee on Lexington. The Walnut exit's half a block from Malaprop's & Chocolate Fetish, a block and a half from the Woolworth Walk, and roughly two blocks from Grove Arcade, College St., and Wall St. with all sorts of great food. It's conveniently a little farther from the Thirsty Monk, Jack of the Wood, etc. The chill in the winter might help if you're visiting those. The location is great for a quick lunch & coffee stop. Ok, the caveat. This is the Civic Center's garage. If there's an event going on, event rules apply. The price is higher, and the garage will run out of spots. But that's understandable. I've only encountered that once, and it was later in the evening than I'd like to admit.

I had no idea this place was going to be as cool as it was, on the inside. The usual irony with…read moreFreemasonry is that these devotees of sacred architecture and geometry meet so often in shabby anonymous buildings with plate glass windows and acoustic ceiling tiles. No such irony here, friends. This particular Masonic Temple is a glorious celebration of detail and craftsmanship. Even the fuse box is beautiful, sitting in plain sight in a glass box in the stairwell, like a lost Joseph Cornell piece. Each doorknob is emblazoned with symbolism in bas relief. The ceiling is expansive, with groined arches recalling classic cathedrals. The original elevator is working, although I think most Americans don't know how to use old-style elevators anymore. The staircase is wide, and recalls the "I don't give a damn" set from Gone With the Wind. The real treasure is the 3rd floor theater. A round, domed room with a curving balcony, painted in dusky pink, chalk blue, and gilt. The acoustics are great, considering the age of the building. The star of the theater is the gorgeous backdrops. So ridiculously gorgeous, they risk upstaging whomever's performing. I've heard folklore (unsubstantiated, but believable) that these backdrops, themselves, are worth millions of dollars on today's market. Layer upon layer of hand-cut, hand-painted detail, that catches the light in amazing, dramatic ways. If you've ever been to the cyclorama in Atlanta, you might recognize a similar style, although the subject matter here isn't military stuff--it's romantic, pastoral, mystical. If you ever get a chance to go to anything at the Masonic Temple, go. Just go. Drop everything and go. Find a babysitter. Cancel your appointments. Go. Especially if you know the event will take place on the 3rd floor. You will be mindblown with awesomeness.

We were headed to that church on the other side of the convention center, so surely they wouldn't ticket the lone car in the parking lot. Guess we were right. Didn't pay for parking, and didn't get a ticket. Mwahaha! This parking lot isn't all that. It's not even properly paved. It was a gravel surface. There was gum in the parking lot, and litter too. Ew. There was no lighting, so how safe was this car? What, exactly were they hoping we were going to be paying for? There was no valet parking option here. McLaurin? More like McLosers.

The last I checked the math, that's 4 hours and 11 minutes of parking when they tell ou on the screen it'll be one day of parking. In my first incident with McLaurin parking I tried to pay with the only card I usually carry: my amex. The machine says it takes amex but the machine refused to processes it "denied" it said. My card was not declined by amex, there is no record that McLaurin's machine even attempted to authorize payment. My two experiences are that these people are liars, nothing they say or show you is the truth and they are doing anything they can to find a reason to issue citations and collect $20 on top of the parking fee you pay.
