Stop & Shop has become of our family's go-to grocery stores. Although I miss having the variety of produce we used to enjoy in our old neighborhood, there's a good basic selection of fruits and vegetables. The pre-sliced cold cuts are helpful to have when things get busy at the deli counter, and the seafood department is a nice touch for procuring fresh seafood. The store itself is brightly lit, and the aisles are broad and well marked, which makes it easy to navigate. The employees are mostly helpful and knowledgeable. read more

I like this store because of the good quality house brands; and the deli . I like that there are still cashiers and they will help bag. The employees are great.Last week I went shopping at a time when business was slower ; and a cashier named JuJu helped me , and showed me I had points on the receipt. I told her I didn't know how to use them, and I pointed to the machine for Go Points and said, I didn't understand it at all. Since there were no other customers, she very patiently explained how it worked and how to get the app on my phone. Such a kind young woman!! A real sweetheart That's not all .A couple of weeks ago I had a large order and at the checkout I was exhausted.(old lady, back problems) There was the young man, a Stop and Shop employee, in line behind me in line had just a few items and I asked him to go in front of me. t looked to me as though he was on his lunch break and was buying snacks. He smiled, but refused. The checker packed the bags for me ; and this young man kindly offered to put them in my car. I told him I didn't want him to spend his break working; and he said ; Oh no, I'm done today, I'm off the clock . Well then, no, I said. But he offered a third time, and I said ok, yes, thanks. I almost cried he was so kind. I wish I had gotten his name. Thank you, son. read more

Lines stack up. Typically only 2 cashiers and a couple of machines. Horribly long lines

Pretty good. :) I like the cake variety and the bagels available but its a sketchy parking lot at night

Picked up some snacks for the week. Staff was nice to me. I also got a puns of crab legs, steamed with old bay seasoning. Homie back there hooked it up. My Cashier Diana was cool too. Lines were well organized. Make sure you bring your own bags or pay for one of theirs. Store was well stocked!! read more

This Stop n shop replaced the dilapidated overpriced Pathmark that used to be the areas main supermarket. Its a pretty good fit, much better maintained than Pathmark. Everything really is largely the same - parking, check out, aisle layout and under some circumstances prices. Stop n shop isn't as cheap as Shoprite but is cheaper than Pathmark especially toward it's end. Stop n shop still has the hot food counter and manager special rack that I've not seen at other ones so that's cool. They implemented a portable self scan which is an interesting idea but not sure how well it works. Options are good though. Decent market and a nice go between with Trader Joes and Shoprite being a couple miles extra. read more

I've been shopping at this S&S for years. But lately the ground beef and the patties are tainted. When you look at pkg everything looks nice and pink. But it appears they've put brownish meat within and covered it with the fresh meat. The patties are also pink but when you open it, and turn them over the color is different and it has a terrible odor. I've been there 3x in the last two weeks and I've always had to bring the meat back. So now I'm going someplace else to a real butcher. Just be careful. read more

First time here, I was passing by on my home for just 2 items. What a dumpy, dirty store. Floors grungy, horrible lighting. Bad bread section. No Vintage seltzer. No hand sanitizer! I walked by the deli, case and behind counter was filthy. Parking was like a maze. I don't recommend this store and I will never be back! read more

Much better selection than the previous grocery stores in the area. I will say customer service is lacking in the stores. I am not a fan of the self-checkouts with a full basket of groceries. The robot that roams the store is creepy and unnerving. The self-checkouts and robot need to go before you lose your entire customer base. read more

Customer service and Star at Wyckoff is great. But the new bags for pickup orders are awful! They are too big and unwieldy. If fully packed they are too heavy to lift out of the car. If not fully packed items fall over and damage other items or fall out of the bag. this morning I had a yogurt ripped open by a bottle. The bags don't stand straight. The issue is not the size of the bag. The issue is how they are packed. There is no reason frozen and dairy can't be in the same bag. There is no reason to put one item in a bag. Train your staff and go back to the old bags. Other supermarkets don't have this ridiculous problem, which makes me consider switching to Shop Rite or Acme, and I actually love Stop and Shop. read more

Good neighborhood grocery store with mostly fair prices, good selection, fresh produce and meats and an in store bakery. Its not as great as the Union Shop Rite on rt 22, but even that store has its issues. I'm glad that Stop & Shop has filled the need for a comprehensive supermarket for such a great area to live. These guys would be better if they expanded, maybe consider building a whole new store, considering what an upscale area Maplewood and South Orange has become over the years, it would be a smart business move before some other chain sees the clear opportunity to serve the area even better. That being said, at first I was not in to this store, but its close to home and it grows on you. For a real sinful treat, check out the fried chicken near the deli section, its pretty great and clears out early: boneless "wings" tenders, nuggets and straight up KFC style fried chicken is so bad its good. read more

Run down of this stop n shop 1. Horrible parking lot 2. You have to bring or buy a bag thanks to local law 3. The deli looks filthy and employees aren't attentive Go elsewhere read more

I go to Stop & Shop because it's close to where I live to pick up a few quick items. In my opinion , they're a little on the expensive side and the layout of the store is a little odd . The one good thing they did when they changed over from Pathmark to Stop & Shop was they kept the fried chicken which is scrumptious. read more

Just got insulted by the manager. Hard to believe. The staff is rude and you wait forever. Expensive and second rate food. The lanes are impassable as they are always shelving. Take your business somewhere else. Aggressive manager needs a different job. And it's dirty. read more

To me, it kind of just feels like the old Pathmark honestly. The layout is practically the same. The big differences are that Bank of America is gone (now there's a Hallmark section), and the store brand is now Stop & Shop. Regardless, it's a solid grocery store and less expensive than Ashley's Marketplace on the avenue. If you live in South Orange, I recommend going here for your staple items and Ashley's for specialty items. read more

So much nicer than the Pathmark! They retained many of the former employees too. Cleaner, nicer, more modern selections: organic, gluten free, etc. The parking lot is still a clusterf*ck--they need a pedestrian overpass. But A+, much improved. Has a pharmacy too. read more

The cake was EXPIRED and MOLDED. I was purchasing a cake from the bakery for my friend's birthday party which was the same day (May 26, 2019). I was in a rush so I picked the cake that matched her color scheme and also had it decorated. The following day, my friend called me and told me that when she was cutting it to have a slice, there was a huge mold spot in the middle of the cake and when they checked the date, it was packaged on February 5, 2019 and the sell by date was May 6, 2019. I went back to the store and got my money back with no issue from the manager (which is the only reason this place is even receiving 2 stars). He stated that he would speak with his bakery department also. I would recommend that you check the expiration date of your foods (specifically baked goods) from this location! read more

Looks like it took 20 minutes to blow up 2 ballons. Unbelievably bad service. Now I remember why I avoid this store.

Terrible. We all got excited when it first replaced pathmark, but it just couldn't keep it up. I gave it a chance today and will not go back. 1. They don't carry Brussels sprouts. 2. The avocados are beyond overripe and straight into rotten. 3. Seafood department staff are nice but clueless. Asked for 3/4 lb salmon and the associate weighed a piece and told me all the prices she had were going to be more than a pound. So, I asked her if she could cut that piece. She whacked it in half and then held up both halves and asked me which one I wanted. Strange. Plus I could barely hear her or see through the filthy plexiglass. We haven't eaten it yet, but I won't be shocked if we wind up with food poisoning. 4. The store was poorly stocked, dimly lit and filthy overall. 5. To top it all off, it was no bargain. I would have been better off going to Whole Foods. At least my curiosity is satisfied. read more

I agree with the previous reviews. This is basically a re-branded Pathmark. Many of the former employees are still here, the layout is essentially the same, and the hot food section serves the same thing minus the fried whiting (the only thing I liked). Product selections are similar to the one in Union, so I'm sure you don't need to drive all the way to Stuyvesant. However, I advise you to look at the expiration dates. I bought a loaf of Italian bread and did not notice the expiration/use by date is actually in three days. The bakery selection is still limited, too. The store is much cleaner now, I'll give them that. Parking is actually busier than before. It does fill up, so you may end up parking further back (towards the CVS). read more

I only go here because it is close and I will NEVER buy fresh meats or fish because they need much improvement with customer service and cleanliness in food handling. The cashier never greeted me when I said hi or even bagged any items. He simply starred at me while I paid and as I was still bagging my items that he didn't help with, he started ringing up the next person. The employees in the deli and seafood are usually texting and do not want to help customers. Management needs to step in, especially in the deli because there is usually always only 1 person working with a line of customers and that isn't fair to them. It is also very unclean as they use the same slicer over and over and have no time to wipe it down. DO NOT buy the seafood unless you want to get sick because I witnessed the employee smoking something with her glove on and texting and never changed her gloves. The produce is overpriced and sometimes wilty. Only come here if you absolutely need to and do not buy the seafood or deli meat unless you want food poisoning. read more

Great supermarket. Get the app! 1) Many improvements in the fresh produce areas in the last six months. Strategic placement and promotions of products (incl. seasonal items) are well-planned and timely. 2) Products are fresh and competitively priced. 3) Mostly well-stocked and highly organized. Cleanliness has improved. Shelves are easy to navigate and frequently re-stocked. 4) Checkout lines are usually moving smoothly. Plenty of parking spaces. 5) Excellent and timely coupons (again, get the app!), sometimes coordinated with weekly promotions for even better deals. 6) Advertised items are easy to find. 7) Efforts are visible to minimize waste. Great inventory control. read more

I've been to this supermarket several times and have seen, each time, multiple employees inside the store with their masks either completely down and off mouths and noses or only covering the mouth, but leaving noses completely uncovered. I will no longer shop here. This morning, Saturday, January 15th, at 7:20 AM, I noted within a fifteen-minute period, five employees like this. I took pictures and sent them to senior corporate management. Two not covering their faces at all are managers at this store. Omicron is highly contagious. Covid cases are at an all-time high for the entire pandemic. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Plus, this is food we're talking about! I saw one maskless manager come within a foot of a customer. All of this is inexcusable. Personally, these employees are selfish and ignorant of facts. They could literally cause the death of someone. That is not a dramatic statement. The Delta variant is still with us along with Omicron. One manager who saw me taking his picture with him not covering his nose and mouth told me to get my camera out of his face. He said this twice. Stupid and arrogant. I'm 68. I have high blood pressure. I need to be very careful and certainly don't wish to land in the hospital because a manager named John decided to be a selfish, ignorant fool and mouth off to me to boot. I alerted senior management. Sent them the pictures I took. I talked with the store manager also. But this is not the first time. Shop at Shoprite, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Greenway Market. They get it. They're careful and respectful of their fellow citizens. Stay away from this Stop n Shop on Valley Street in South Orange. Unless, of course, you like ventilators. Atrocious attitudes from these workers and just plain stupid. After hearing from customer service. Here are now my added remarks...no one I saw working in the store this morning had a face shield or gloves. No one. There were no directional markings on the floor. Two managers had their entire faces exposed. I saw zero N95 masks. Zero. I saw loose-fitting cloth masks. Maybe corporate store protocol is as was mentioned to me here. But it's not being followed at the Valley Street South Orange, NJ store. read more

I shop the South Orange, NJ Stop & Shop. Today there was a recall on the PF Chang's Beef & Broccoli frozen item. I received an email in regards to the recall stating that I could return to my local store to be credited a refund. Also, that if I hadn't used the product or if there was any under portion of the product I could return it to the store as well. While shopping today I requested the refund for the recalled PF Chang's Beef & Broccoli that I purchased 3 weeks ago. The customer agent asked me if I had the receipt. I told her not on me but there is proof of purchase which can be found on my Stop & Shop account under "past purchases" if she take a moment to review it. She decided to call over the manager Bill to assist. Once Bill arrived and after hearing my situation he decided to not offer a refund because I didn't have the receipt. I expressed that I didn't have the receipt on my person and that this purchase was made 3 weeks ago. And that there is record of proof of purchase of this specific item on my Stop & Shop account. To which he still declined very sarcastically and with much attitude. This recall is for a potential allergen. I'd love to have some type of resolve even if it's just monetarily. I don't believe I should have to pay for something that is a risk at no fault to mine. His poor managerial decision customer service could put my family and others at risk. Although, this location is closest to me, I think it's worth it to solely do my shopping at ShopRite or WholeFoods going forward. read more

Stop & Shop on Valley in South Orange reminds me so much of Pathmark. Just a name change. Staff is courteous and willing to work with you at all times. They have a wide selection of international foods which is always fresh. Their hours of operation are convenient. I have one thing for everyone to remember and that is that we still have a supermarket close to home. As a community we were able to keep a needed part of the neighborhood, a place to run to close at night for necessities. read more

Contacted the store about a item I was told it was there went to pick it up and my item was no where to be found SMFH do better people

Great to have a Stop and Shop near the Maplewood and South Orange towns. Great selection of Organic foods and all other items that you would expect in a large supermarket. However on the downside, it still has the same layout as the old Pathmark store. The staff is very mixed as some are extremely nice and helpful and some really need to be trained better and come across as passive aggressive and somewhat confrontational. This would turn me away from any store no matter how good the selection is. Management should not dismiss feedback like this as people who traditionally shop at Wholefoods or Trader Joe's are used to excellent friendly staff. I hope that Stop and Shop can look at this. read more

Good layout, nice little selection of products. A little pricey but its location is convenient. The produce section is a hit or miss.

A job rarely rewarded with thanks, it is imperative that I publicly say, "Thank you" to Marj and Nicole in the bakery department of Stop and Shop in South Orange for greeting me with warmth and going above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you. A happy customer. read more

I am in the food business, so I shop all over the area. The prices here are more expensive across the board than Shoprite, so I still necessary for me to travel to one of their stores for the best prices. Shoprite Short Hills still has the best fish department around, and the biggest selection of produce. My biggest issue is with the staff, who, as Robert B reported, runs a wide gamut. Twice, when asked if I had my customer card, I said, "I'll dig it out later, but please start ringing me up." The cashier would not start ringing me up until I gave her the card! It really was just being lazy. (Anyway, I only go here for emergencies. It is an improvement over Pathmark but I still prefer to drive to Shoprite Short Hills or Livingston for a much better experience. It is not the Super Store that we were all hoping for. read more

Very good supermarket. The layout inside has been changed a little since Pathmark but it has made a huge difference. Nature's Promise has lots of organic stuff in the middle of the store and Stop & Shop has used the space better than Pathmark did. Additionally, the self checkout is bigger and better than when it was Pathmark. A PNC Bank ATM has replaced the Bank of America ATM, outside of that none of the other amenities have been changed. read more

From my extensive observation not only was the produce weltering and of poor quality, I found some of the employees very unprofessional, I saw men in white jackets working in the meat department with dreadlocks and no hair nets on or gloves. I'm in business school studying hospitality management so I was beyond appalled and disgusted. I live in West Orange and happen to be in the area when I went in there. I found that there was no security in the parking lot (unlike Shoprite in Livingston or WholeFoods) and customers where driving wildly in the parking lot. To make matters worse I bought a bag of Russell Stover sugar free peanut butter cup chocolates, only to go home and find that they were expired. I nearly threw up. I will never again shop at that establishment or refer anyone that I know to that place. The customer service there and produce was definitely of poor quality and not up to par. Never again!!! read more
