I like that the parking lot is really big and it's not crowded like the one on N Main. As soon as you walk in you can notice how well laid out and organized this store is...all the nice fresh produce on the right as soon as you walk in....then all the other departments as you progress inwards. I went in to get some Amazon Prime specials and a few grocery items. I like the 365 brand, it's a generic label but of very high quality. Whole Foods Market started in 1984 in Austin TX, and during those early years, it slowly opened stores in the South.....first in Houston and Dallas and then in New Orleans. The company made its initial public offering on January 23, 1992. While opening new stores, the company fueled rapid growth by acquiring other natural foods chains throughout the 1990s and the 2000s. In June 2017, Amazon purchased Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion. In January 2019, to facilitate expansion into previously unserved areas, Amazon announced plans to acquire some former Sears and Kmart locations from Sears Holdings, which filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection on October 15, 2018. These vacant locations would be demolished or remodeled to create new Whole Foods Market locations. This is definitely a well run organic grocery store that has many devoted followers.

The buffet and salad bar was full of options that looked fresh and it was pristine (staff was literally straightening it up and stocking it while I was there). The Waterman store should take note, their buffet and salad bar are pathetic! There are a lot of tables to sit at and eat if you wanna grab something to eat before shopping at Garden City. They also have a really good fresh flower selection. You can also get nice holiday wreaths, mums and Christmas trees for reasonable prices. Don't get me started on the pastry case because everything looks amazing! I love the tiny sizes because you can try different desserts.

The parking lot is quite spacious, but the plaza only offers paid parking, however you can get your parking validated with purchase at any store in the plaza with proof of parking ticket. The store itself was clean, rather spacious, and well organized with clearly labeled aisles and pricing. I found that you could get many of the staple items at nearby competitors for nearly half the price. I thought they offered unique products in the meals to go section for a reasonable price point. I would recommend the mini snackle boxes and raw pressed juices. Those could actually be useful for a nearby beach trip and I liked that they use glass jars. The woman running the cafe section of the store was very hospitable, but as other Yelpers have mentioned some of the other store associates were less than enthused. I kind of get it though, Newport's upper echelon isn't the easiest clientele to interact with so I would probably get a little stoic over time as well.

My husband loves being on base and grocery stores so this is a win-win for him. The base itself is on the small side, so the Commissary is not a 'super store'. As with all Commissary's, the person packing your groceries is working for tips. If you are not the tipping sort or have a very fixed budget, they have self check-out. During certain hours of the day, military personnel in uniform go to the top of the queue so don't be upset if you have to wait a bit to check-out - that sailor needs to get back to work! Carts/buggies/carriages are kept inside the entrance on the left. Here, and just inside the store you may find items on sale or sold in bulk. A small Sushi kitchen kiosk is located in front of the produce department, just inside the store. The selection of produce is pretty good with a small 'organic' section located at the back where you'll also find Tofu and refrigerated salad dressing. Meats run along the back wall and that selection is pretty good as well as the prices. Dairy and frozen items are in the far corner, opposite side from the entrance. Dry goods inventory here consists of the 'usual suspects'. They offer a limited selection of national brands and a few items from other countries you may have been stationed in. A deli featuring Boar's Head cold cuts, prepared items, cheeses and bakery items is just past the check-out lines. They will make you a sandwich 'to-go'. Price list is over the meat counter. We found some sweet treats from Italy in the bakery area last visit. Frozen foods sometimes include 'past sale date' meats at a reduced price. All the expected items: veg, pizza, bowls, fish, etc. are here. Milk, OJ, eggs, yogurt and so on are in the dairy corner. Sometimes you'll find whole turkeys in chest freezers here. Be sure to check the freezer cases throughout this area as the inventory changes. MRE's are for sale over by the registers aisle. They cost more than dehydrated hiking meals and I do wonder who is spending that much on MRE's. They offer a variety of canned goods including meats such as chicken, spam, corned beef and tuna, Shelf stable milk is available (school lunch) and plenty of snacks, sweet and savory. The parking lot is huge so no need to worry about finding a spot. Some spaces are reserved and the lanes are 'one way' so be sure you are headed in the right direction and don't park in the commodore's spot! Watch out for the elderly and small children in the parking area. Also, because the base is 'right on the water' this parking lot can get very windy! Hold on to your hat and umbrella! Years ago a DECA employee (DECA run the Commissary system) said prices are better when it's not payday. As a young family on a military budget, we usually had an empty larder come payday, so it's not easy to 'hold off' buying groceries for a few days. As retired military, we can stop by any time and I do find prices seem better between pay days versus near pay day. Just my personal observation. Take it as you will. Hope this info is useful! Bon appetito!

Aldi is the kind of grocery store that rewards the prepared shopper and I say that with admiration…read more You bring your own bags, you bring your quarter for the cart, and in return, Aldi brings you something rare in retail: consistency, clarity, and value without the fluff. Let's start with the layout. Whether I'm in Missouri or Maine, stepping into an Aldi feels like slipping into a familiar rhythm. The aisles are predictably arranged, the signage is direct, and the essentials--milk, eggs, produce, pantry staples--are right where I expect them. That uniformity isn't just convenient; it's comforting. I know where my stuff is, and I don't waste time wandering. Now, about the prices. Aldi is inexpensive, not cheap. That distinction matters. Cheap implies corner-cutting, i.e., flimsy packaging, questionable quality, or a race to the bottom. Inexpensive means smart sourcing, streamlined operations, and a no-frills approach that passes the savings on to you. Aldi's store-brand products often rival national brands in taste and quality, and the savings are real. You won't find loyalty programs or coupon gimmicks here. Just straightforward pricing that respects your budget. The quarter-for-a-cart system? Brilliant. It keeps the parking lot tidy and the overhead low. And the bag-your-own-groceries model? It's a small trade-off for the kind of prices that make you feel like you've outsmarted the system. I'm a huge fan. Aldi doesn't try to be everything. It just tries to be good at what it does. In a world of bloated supermarkets and performative retail, that kind of focus feels refreshingly honest. [Review 1081 of 2025 - 86 in Rhode Island - 24635 overall]

On a quiet weekend afternoon, we decided to swing through and give them a try, with limited expectations on what we were going to walk into. When we arrived, we were the only ones ordering at the deli counter. I ordered the falafel wrap and he ordered the Italian grinder. We also picked a carrot cake slice, a piece of tres leches cake and a peanut butter cup cookie for good measure. Once the meals were made, we took them home to eat. The guy who made our food asked me when he was putting the wrap together if I wanted "everything" on it. I asked what everything meant, and he went down the list of veggies and sauces. I told him that the only thing I didn't want was peppers of any kind. Despite this, the wrap had two different kinds of peppers. The falafel inside the wrap was cold, dry, and fell apart like sand. It was hands down one of the worst falafel I've ever eaten. Unfortunately that's not where it ended. Hubby's sando was terrible, he said the sauce on the grinder was so heavy handed, he couldn't taste anything inside it. The desserts were not much better, with the cookie being dry and crumbly, and the cakes being ok but not great. The wait time for these items to be made was pretty long, and even with that long wait time they were not well made, or even made according to our personal order. I don't know of the quality of the items, because they tasted so bad, we got maybe two or three bites in and chucked them directly in the garbage. Prices were ok if they had been worth eating, and service was slow and inaccurate. I'm not sure what the hype is here, but it's definitely not for the items we had at our visit. We will definitely not be returning, given how many other better options exist in this area.

Prices are similar to what you would see from gas station convenient stores (i.e. not cheap). Staff seem pretty friendly. If you live 5 miles east or west of here, though, you'll find a larger selection for cheaper cost at the big name grocery stores (other than the spices, that is).
