I had to cancel my membership due to produce being delivered soft, rotten or expired. Just disgusting!!!!! It happened at least 6 times. This grocery store is located in Middletown, which is the town just north of Newport. In the main city of Newport there are no large grocery stores, so you have to travel to Middletown or Portsmouth, to do some "local" shopping. This Shaw's had a large selection of ice cream cones, which is what I was in search for...they had national brands and private label options. Their self checkout lanes are the best option to pay swiftly. read more

Waste of time and money. Their delivery is on time but it's expensive. Shaws doesn't do a great job at inventory so you'll select things that are out of stock unknowingly and Shaws either substitutes them for other things you don't want or doesn't deliver them at all so you have to go out and go shopping anyways. Which defeats the purpose of paying for delivery... plus tipping the driver. $17 for delivery and tip folks. read more

Shaws is my go to store when I'm in Newport. I don't like what happened in the fruit and veg department last week. My complaint was that every bunch of bananas were green. I asked the grocer in that department "why?" He just shrugged and didn't want to engage in a conversation. I thought it was odd but I bought them anyway. Well one week later they are still green with a very tough skin. I tried the bag trick and that didn't work. 1) I still want to know why? and 2) I want my $2.00 back. I don't know if it was a fluke but I think customers deserve more than being ignored. read more

I should sign up. The last Shaw's I went too was in Portsmouth , ME. We had just finished lunch at Siam Square (which I know you read those two reviews) and decided ice cream was in order. We couldn't find a 31 so this was our stop. You know me, I gotta explore and I should have brought my hydro flask with me because this place is huge. It gives BJ a run for it money on floor space. Ok I'm slightly exaggerating again but it's big. The layout is different from what I'm use too from Safeway. We all know their under the same company with the signature brand logo. It seems that all or almost all of the refrigerated section goes along the walls of the store vice the middle. And yes the dairy section is strategically placed in the back. In the middle, is the medical section with the security monitors. Not very high def but hopefully it does it's job. And of course there is the deli section, a seafood section (sorry peeps no POKE), a bakery section that smells great, and an international section. Opps I forgot to look for spam and compare. I did the self checkout thing and tried to use my number for discounts and points. Of course, it didn't take so I have to register next time. And if you remember my Safeway review from 2017 you'll see my TIP on how to get the local discount. Overall four stars. You'll find what you need to plan your next meal. Why not five? Really it's a supermarket, if they passed out free samples like Costco that would be a different story. Now excuse me, I gotta get to the hotel before the ice cream melts. M read more

I need to give it a 5 star just for having Prime beef! For those that are unaware, beef is graded as USDA Prime, Choice, or Select. Prime is usually reserved for hotels and restaurants to used. It has great marbling and flavor but does come at a higher price point. Choice is generally what you see on the supermarket shelves and is great in its own right! Marbling is still good but compare them side by side and the difference is clear. Select is usually not sold in supermarkets but rather in processed foods. read more

I don't know why this particular Shawn's has the worst customer service & the most impolite staff! I can't tell if it's just because people in Middletown/Newport RI are just rude in general or if this store finds pride in hiring the least friendly people they can find! Maybe the hiring managers don't care about their customers or standards I don't know! From saying literally nothing to customers short of a few grunts, having AirPods in their ears so they can't communicate effectively they are just rude! Additionally, expecting the customer to bag their groceries or pushing pregnant women out of the way in the middle of their transaction to start another customers transaction this place is the worst place to come for any service, avoid if possible! Go to stop and shop or Market Basket if possible! read more

I had a terrible experience at the Shaws store at 71 E Main Rd, Middletown, Rhode Island, on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at 5:45 p.m. I waited in line with two shoppers behind me, and after 12 minutes, the cashier abruptly told us his station was closed. This left us to go back into long lines. I have shopped at this store for many years but will bring my business elsewhere because of this rude service. Shaw's has all the basic supermarket finds plus a few extras, would have to say it is up to par with the better markets in same class. The best part of store is the olive bar, great selection and well laid out. Store is kept clean and smells of fresh produce despite a small selection. I gave four stars due to the rural area, ease of access, plenty of parking, cleanliness, and central location of store in Middletown. read more

This is one of the most expensive grocery stores on the island with poor customer service and inconsistent inventory. In store this morning at 830 hardly anyone on the floor, no cashiers were open (only self serve), empty shelves in butcher department. Snarky butcher told me they didn't have any beef marrow bones in the back, he would've gotten them if they did. Later found me at the registers (already paid and on my way out) to say he "found" some. Well, it's a day late and a dollar short. For these prices ($5 cantaloupe for Pete's sake) I have expect a pristine store full of friendly, helpful employees. If you want a terrible shopping experience, this location never lets you down. I kept hoping it would get better, knew pandemic was contributing to staffing issues, but I am DONE with Shaws and suggest you STAY AWAY unless you are completely desperate (like a hurricane is coming and you urgently need supplies). read more

I recently moved to the area with the husband and this is one of the grocery stores nearby. They have a decent selection of items and even has a salad bar, soup station, even a small olive and wings station! The employees have been nice so far and haven't had a bad experience here *knock on wood* - the best one was actually earlier today (2/21/17). I was checking out and was pushing an empty cart out and left it by the exit doors and went on my way. As the husband and I were about to pull out of the parking lot, I realized I don't have my wallet nor my keys on me and must have left it in the shopping cart. Ran back towards the carts area, not there, now I'm panicking. I walk up to the gal who bagged our groceries and pointed me toward the service counter near the entrance. In my head, I'm already planning to call my bank to cancel my credit cards I had in my wallet. I asked the lady at the counter if anyone had turned in a black wallet with a set of keys...and to my surprise, she said yes! She just asked for my name to make sure the belongings in the wallet matched and lo and behold, nothing was missing! To the kind soul who turned it in: THANK YOU! Nice grocery store in the Middletown area. After checking a few of the others out, I was relieved when I found this one. The Shaw's offers a build your own Salad area, which is nice when you just want something light and you don't like the pre-packaged mess that normally is sold at other places. The other thing I really like is the large quantity of fresh vegetables and fruits that they chop up and put right onto the line. The meat counters have a lot of nice choices, and variety of selection is nice. The store itself is well lit and bright, seems newer than the others in the area, and they even offered samples on a few of our trips. The only complaint I have is that some of the sales require you to buy 3-5 of the item to get the sale price. I got snagged by a 1.99 for a 12 pack of soda I like. Problem, you have to buy 5 12 packs to get the price, otherwise its 4.99 a 12 pack. That blew my mind. Other than that, for a married guy without kids, this place works well. I can understand the complaint about the slightly higher prices, but sometimes nice and clean has a cost. read more

I tend to judge Grocery stores on how clean/shiny the floor is, how long the produce lasts after you buy it, how the meat department smells aaaaannnnd of course selection. I hate having to go to multiple stores. This is the best grocery store on the island hands down. read more

I have shopped at Shaw's since they opened, but lately I am not a happy customer, first off all never go there on Sundays they never have any thing on the shelves in produce and the meat dept, next ,every time something is on sale they are out or it rings in wrong on the register. And today I went to get some mushrooms no mushrooms on the shelf so I had to get a 2lb pack for 5.00 not happy but had no choice but to get them needed for recipe. Finally I go to the register and i had a bottle of cooking wine that they would not let me purchase without an id card, I am 59 years old and they never asked me for an id before, that was it for me, I am done with Shaw's. I went to Stop and Shop got my mushrooms and everything else I needed their shelves were full and no hassles from cashier. Be happy and stress free go else where. read more

We have been coming to Newport on weekends for 5 years. We have always been disappointed in Newport's Stop&Shop. We were looking for a loin and S&S butcher shop was empty. We found Shaw's and were amazed at the difference. The butcher shop had 5 people working and cut a loin to our specifications. The store was overwhelming and huge. The selection was amazing. As G&T fans, they even had Fever Tree tonic. Since discovering it, we have not found anything we couldn't get there. I am rarely impressed with grocery stores but I was with this one! It is worth the extra couple of minutes of driving to get there from Newport. read more

I used to shop here regularly, but found the service was going downhill and every time I went in the store for sale items (on the day the sale started!) they were always out of at least half the items on my list.. I went in here for the first time in over a year last month and it was okay, they had most of the sale stuff I wanted and the store was even clean.. I got up front to cash out and was surprised to see the self checkout's gone, but considering the neighborhood this store is in, I wasn't overly surprised. Just disappointed. I'm one of those customers that is very particular about how her items are bagged and prefer self checkouts. I've been in here a few times since and it was okay, until I went in Sunday night with a list that consisted of 9 items. They were out of 4. So I ended up buying a different brand of these items so there went the money I'd gone out of my way to save and having to deal with a cashier as well. But I was there so I got everything I needed, went to the bakery and sure enough the one bakery item I really needed was out, but it had a fruit topping on it. Whos bright idea was it to put a fruit topping on a chocolate tiger cake? So I asked the girl (after waiting 10 minutes for her to come back to the bakery) if they had any in the freezer. I knew for a fact that they came frozen and all they had to do is pipe a chocolate border around it (which I was going to just do myself if she was willing to get me one) and instead of taking the time to walk into the freezer and get me one, she lied to me and said that was the last one. Bull. I've worked in supermarket bakeries. and I could tell she was lying, I purposely called the store the next morning and asked if they had any frozen so I could buy it that way and keep it in my own freezer til I needed it and the person in the bakery said they had a bunch of them and just to come in and ask. busted. lying LAZY employee. So anyway I just ended up choosing another cake that night because I needed it for them, and didn't even bother to ask her to write Happy Birthday on it because 1- I'm particular about penmanship and I just went home and did it myself. So I'd pretty much decided this would be my last trip to the Middletown Shaws and I get to the cashier who is a complete and total B!TCH. I've never had worse customer service in my life. Maybe she was mad because I was bagging the groceries but I doubt it cause it was obvious she didn't even want to be there. She bagged 3 items for me. Mixing frozen food with a box of crackers. what the...? I fixed the bags, paid, she asked if I was doing the monopoly and I said yes just to make her do more work, she practically threw the game pieces at me and turned around to be rude to the person behind me. I recently moved to Newport and have had a hard time finding my go to grocery store. My mother has always gone to Shaw's and I had tried it previously. After a bad experience I decided to give it a second try. I was so disappointed. The produce is not great at all. They didn't have any cauliflower or sweet potatoes and the cilantro and basil I was looking for were old and brown. I asked two separate people (in different departments) for help and neither was able to help me, nor did they even try. I also think their prices are higher than other places. It cost me almost $40 more than I usually spend for my weekly shopping. In general I give it a "meh", not impressed. read more

When I arrived in the area I went shopping here as it popped up in my search for grocery stores. While it's a pretty large store with plenty of selection, I wasn't too satisfied with my purchase after. Their produce was lacking and disorganized. The meat seemed past its fresh date and I ultimately threw out the chicken I bought. Their non-perishable selection was great, so that was helpful. Overall the prices were reasonable, they just do a poor job with their meat and produce sections. read more
