I normally go to Stop Shop Belchertown, good people less choices than SS Hadley but Larger Store now and then, sales if you go either can save 20-30%, make it a game but 20-30% can be 1-2K/yr. Miss real butchers but plent at Whole foods (sales) or Atkins? Local farms are good. I have been a S&S customer for 30 years. This store (not my regular store) is the worst I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. The layout was very confusing and made it hard to find anything. For example, there was a small sized freezer opposite the bread section with frozen vegetables. They didn't have well known organic brands like Ezekiel bread, which is weird for a high end location. Worse, they marked dust free cat litter as on sale for @ $13.00, then charged $16.00 and took one dollar off, for $15.00. My local Belchertown store is soooo much better. Honestly, I don't see what the carping Shopzillas below are hot and bothered about. This is a large Stop & Shop, with the usual wares large supermarkets have, and very broad hours. Granted, I prefer Big Y, but I come here because I buy lots of generic DC, and Big Y's generic DC tastes like soap, and Stop & Shop's doesn't. (Another bonus is that Amherst has a plastic bag ban and Hadley doesn't.) Yes, the prices are horribly expensive, but that's the fact of life living here: they jack the prices to soak the students, like every other business in Amherst, Hadley and Northampton. read more

It has been a while since we have shopped at this Stop & Shop, but our experience hasn't changed much since our undergrad. The store itself is a decent size and it is typically well stocked. This store has a great variety of merchandise and even though I don't celebrate passover, I was amazed to see their selection of kosher items. The issues that I have with this particular store aren't unique to this one location, but sometimes they feel heightened here. The first is that the cost of items here is a bit high. A can of Progresso Soup was almost $4 while it cost $2 at Walmart. The second issue is with customers. They are always in the way and I don't know if it is entitlement, but they walk the store like they own it. Finally, many of the staff here are rude and not helpful. It seems like they don't have a plan for the COVID situation-- no hand sanitizers at the entrance, no (enough) stickers for 6 feet rule, no limitation on the amount of ppl in store. Today my husband and I was standing in the line for checkout and someone's trying to get through behind me. Okay, we stepped forward a little. And the man in front of me just started saying we're too standing close to him. He looked very angry. I roughly looked at the distance between me and him. That's definitely 6 feet. (And later the manager said that was 6-feet.) He kept staring at me unfriendly even if it's already his turn. I said- it's 6 feet now, stop staring at me. They are one of the largest grocery stores in town. It's complete with pharmacy, flower shop, butcher (depending on your definition) fish market (again, depending on your definition), deli etc. The cool stuff- If you have a stop and shop card, you can use their cool new scanner that lets you load all your groceries as you go. I take my re-usable bags and when i pull something off the shelf BAM scan it, put in the bag and press on with pride. Then at the end, you just scan the bar code at the self serve register, and pay. Done, outta here! And...if your going to the deli, go to the automatic deli computer and input your order and when it's ready, they announce it over the PA. No more waiting at the counter. The produce section is pretty big and has almost everything I ever need. Their produce prices are not the most expensive in the area, but they are certainly not the cheapest. Huge frozen food section. Almost scary how much Ice Cream they have. Okay. Not so cool stuff.- The store is almost, dare I say it, too big. They have isle after isle of stuff and sometimes you feel like your shopping in a huge warehouse. The scanning machine has it's bugs. Sometimes when you scan an item, it can be picky about whether it reads the bar code or not. They should have stationary bar codes for smaller items like scallions etc. And, at checkout the auto register does not take Stop and Shops own bottle return vouchers! Whats up with that? You have to wait until one of the staff comes by (because of the now blinking light over your register) who then refunds your money by way of a register...at the end of the register. I know sounds weird but you'll see what I mean. Doors are smaller than the older version of Stop and Shop before the re-model. Why? They need better music. If I'm about to spend $200 on groceries, I should be able to whistle while I do it. No beer and wine. Moldy brie... Disgusting. The overseer of the cheese section should know better... There is a visible white layer of mold over the sides of the wedge (when it's fresh cut it's a light beige). This is EXPIRED and tastes horrible, should be creamy & light. UPDATE: It's been an hour since I ate a bite of this and now my stomach hurts and I'm nauseous. My husband and I got our first grocery pick up from here this morning and all was well. However, I'm docking 2 stars because of Stop and Shop's policy of not allowing their employees to accept tips. When I tried to tip $20 to the (very sweet) employee who was loading our groceries into the car for us, she graciously declined and informed us that they weren't allowed to accept tips. This policy is absolutely ridiculous! These grocery workers are out here working extra hard and risking their health during a pandemic so that people have food, the least Stop and Shop can do is let them accept tips. If I want to tip the employees bringing me food to my car, that should be between me and them, Stop and Shop shouldn't be banning them from accepting the tips these people deserve! read more

Just saw James's review from November, and the manager's response. I've been to this store a number of times, and it is scary. People don't keep their distance. The staff are as bad as the customers. Management: you could be doing a lot more to enforce compliance with the rules. It's especially annoying when you have robots watching us. I go to Stop & Shop because I really enjoy looking for things: I enjoy looking for items that once were at one end of the store and now have been moved all the way to the other end of the store. I enjoy looking for things I'd like to buy that are not there on the shelves, which have been empty for months and months. I enjoy looking for things that I bought once, really enjoyed, and that I have never, EVER seen again. I enjoy looking for those little cards at the ends of the aisles that tell you where things have been moved to THIS week, especially when what I am looking for doesn't appear on the card, or appears under a listing that no sane person would ever use, or there's no card to be found. And recently, I've enjoyed looking for my cart that was full of the groceries that I had just purchased, which was left unattended as I turned my back to pick up a prescription, and which someone walked off with, inexplicably not realizing it wasn't their cart, and then failing to return it to where they took it from. I really enjoyed walking the whole length of the store yet again, looking for my lost cart, thinking I had lost my mind (which I could also have enjoyed looking for). Over the last year, I have had the pleasure of my cart disappearing two other times, and have just super enjoyed looking for the idiot who wandered along and just had to roll my cart away to some other part of the store so I could spend all this extra time enjoying looking for it after they abandoned it. Maybe its because I'm from back east, but Big Y is for townie assholes. Stop and Shop is better, cheaper, and anonymous. Maybe its because I'm an asshole, but when I go shopping I don't want to be part of this large community where the market feels the need to be a cornerstone of the town. Disappointed in this particular location. I've always been a devoted Stop and Shop patron, but I find that the employees here are incredibly lazy. Every time I go in there, the employees are standing around looking bored, or carrying on personal conversations with each other. When I stopped in last week there was not a single basket or cart in store, because they were all left out in the parking lot and nobody bothered to bring them in. Aren't there specific people hired for that job? Today was really mind blowing to me. I went through the self check out, and as usual there was an employee "supervising" that particular area. I had a decent amount of groceries, and she stood there watching me as I scanned them one by one. She didn't budge to come bag my groceries for me, but continued to stand there looking bored, because I was the only one in any of the self checkout lines. Now, I am not a lazy person, and I am happy and capable to bag my own groceries, but if an employee is being paid and is standing around doing nothing, shouldn't they offer to help their customers? As a manager of a business, I would be furious if any of my employees were ever caught standing around doing nothing, ESPECIALLY if there was a customer in need of service. Since the snow crab is always cooked, one would expect it to be safe under any circumstance. However, I discovered that the crab was rotten and smelled heavily of ammonia. This is not the first time I purchased rotten food from stop and shop but it is the last. It is obvious that quality control is not of high importance at this store. To the person below who does not see why so many complain, you obviously do not know much about the industry or visit enough to understand their gripes on the matter. That being said, this place has a serious passive aggressive, plotting, and "stab you in the back" problem when it comes to employees and management staff. I can tell you because I worked there over a year, and from the moment I began to the day I quit, the manager Mike Crowner, as well as many other management staff say for a few, are condescending, and very immature. They break policy all the time, and even go as far as to rig people's time punches behind the scenes were only an internal investigation could prove this t the public. when people show up on time, know this by making sure they are updated on policy, yet still get brought in the office and being told they are late majority of the time, what do you think that is about? CORRUPTION. It's very simple to understand it can be done with computers these days. Another issue was staff did not have enough tools to do their jobs most the time, as the company was too cheap to resupply when needed, and only after multiple complaints and people addressing the issue to the point of almost quitting, do they do their damn jobs as intended, and help their own staff. The box compactor for instance, constantly has boxes in front of it, not inside, and stacked up high and in the fire lanes to the door out back. Nobody had keys, they just stacked it for somebody else to do, and while those people did the job, they fell behind because others could care less. They also had departments lacking staff, some even forced to have one working two departments, which is beyond frustrating and near impossible to do with the time you are given. Expectations from employees it's insane, and the only thing the manager cares about is his own image, and retirement. The assistant managers, not all, but some, even acknowledged this and would talk behind the managers back all the time but somehow, would never get HR or Corporate to respond. Many people did an amazing job, and yet Crowner, would find ways to talk bad about them, put them down, or literally call them names, or call them stupid, to their faces. He would then do the corporate shill maneuver, and talk all professional on the intercom, thanking his staff, while he just downed them prior or right after. I was not the only person he did this to, nor was I the only person who witnessed this. Many did not like this guy and for good reason. If that was not bad enough, certain employees got favored all the time, and it got so bad they openly began to cause drama for the public to see and witness. The passive aggressive and rude attitudes from these people is sickening, and most of them are spoiled entitled college kids who want to be on their phones all day and roll their eyes when somebody has to ask them to do their jobs. Not all employees are this way, but the only way you would know, is if you worked for them. This company just had a massive strike, over 31,000 people all across New England, and it was not just over health benefits like the MSM would tell you. It was also about treatment, payroll mistakes constantly, cutting of hours, expectations rising, demands rising, cutting of overtime, paid leave, cutting of holiday pay and time and a half, as well as many other problems that keep occurring. This company, has a ton of scandals on it's record, all you got to do is research, i mean really research and you will find the truth. They have too many recalls, and they literally ship near rotting meat s well as meat dyed with red ink to make it look fresh, to each and every store. If they force 1 person to cover the meat department, outside of the meat cutters, and usually right after 3pm when it gets the most busy, how can one person spot all this, and report it, let alone get it to change? They can't. Customers constantly return rotting meat, and that is why they got the deal were if your not satisfied, you get double your money back. That is a big red flag as it shows they probably know this occurs, and tempt the customer to come back again because they will get double refunds. yes, this area is a big scam to college students, but this company does this EVERYWERE. Not just in Hadley. I have known many who worked for this company a long time, and they all agree, both who still work there looking for a new job, or those who left, that it is run by greedy uncaring people who care more about profit, then they do of peoples health, and employees being able to pay the bills, and stress levels. If you cannot see what the problem is, your out right blind, willfully ignorant, or just do not understand how this business works. They didn't just have the most devastating strike in this companies history, for no reason. Hell, if you don't believe the reviews here, just go try and work for this very store for more then a year. I dislike this store, especially the so-called service. I have only been shopping there recently because someone gave me a gift card. As soon as it is exhausted, I will return to Big Y. Today, I stood in front of a butcher for several minutes as he cut meat and ignored me, knowing very well I was there. Finally I requested a half pound of ground beef. He glared at me, waved an arm and said "The hamburger is over there." As I was checking out, the woman behind the counter asked me in a condescending and accusatory tone, if I had swiped a card to pay. I've been shopping at this store for decades, but am barely buying enough at this point to keep my gas points from expiring. Why? First, many food items, particularly USDA organic items in the health food section, are usually more expensive than at the Whole Foods just down the street. Second, the fresh seafood always looks not so fresh when compared to competitors. And third, worst of all, Stop and Shop seems clueless about the extent of GMO ingredients (corn, soy, canola, cottonseed, bovine growth hormone) throughout the store and continues to push "natural" foods that are anything but...these foods contain GMO ingredients and other questionable food ingredients. Recently, for example, after shopping at this store I found a booklet in my shopping bag that promoting their "Nature's Promise" line of supposedly healthier foods. Some Nature's Promise food items labeled as USDA organic seem fine, but the "natural" food items with this label are once again full of GMOs. I tried to dialog with Stop and Shop about this on their Facebook page, but there was no response and my post was quickly deleted. GMO labeling is likely to pass soon at the state or federal level and stores behind the curve like this one will surely suffer the consequences of declining market share... My advice to anyone shopping at Shop and Stop: learn about GMO foods and read the ingredient labels carefully...it's not just about GMO ingredients but the fact than many of them also have unacceptably high levels of Roundup herbicide residue... read more

I was shopping here the other day to pick up items I needed for post surgery care plus some groceries and I stood out by the meat for a long time until my friend was able to get their attention from the back. They seemed passive aggressive and rude and it was a very awkward experience. Literally never happened to me before. Checking out was really awkward too. I used the self check out and a few items failed to scan and allegedly someone was supposed to come to assist me. I eventually figured out how to enter items in manually, but I seriously could have just walked out without having to pay for anything and no one would have even noticed. read more

The lady who took my order for a floral arrangement was extremely nice and helpful. Delivery was as planned. The recipient noted how fresh the flowers looked and that the arrangement looked like a garden. Delivery fee was minimal. I will definitely use them again. read more

I'm not a huge fan of the Stop & Shop but that's just me personally I think. It's mainly because I don't think that the produces all that great and I really love good produce. I'm practically a vegetarian, but that's more than you really need to know about me are more than you really need to know that penguins as the saying goes. However, if you don't have a car and you have to take the bus this is really your only option and it's not all that bad to tell you the truth.
