Guests need to check in and have their picture taken. First floor reminds me of a nice hotel. The flower arrangements are real! They offer a theater, activity rooms (pool, ping pong , puzzles etc ). There is also a nice fitness center with a pool and a hot tub. I haven't seen the dining room or library but I am told they have an excellent burger and the library has a variety of different reads. There are different floors depending on the residents' needs. There is assisted living floor , a mental illness floor and retirement community floor. The units are large and customized. The view of the Elizabeth river from the "old" building is gorgeous. I do know they have medical and physical therapy on site too which is very convenient. I've only heard good things about the quality of care. So far I am very pleased with where my family is going to be living out the rest of their many years. I will be visiting often. Lastly, it is very convenient that Dumar's and Orapax are so close. Highly recommend dining there!

I was greatly impressed. We were impressed with Erika Cruz, who assisted us with a tour. I would say the individuals appeared to be very comfortable, active and pleased. I was pleasantly surprised that the Commonwealth was the type of place where you could live with dignity and respect while still maintaining a good quality of life, Commonwealth offers a variety of activities in the form of computer accommodations, library,movies, fine dining, a spacious community area where everyone can commune and enjoy football, etc. just a great place for anybody to reside. my first time meeting the Commonwealth staff; the professionalism is top tier. The Commonwealth offers and maintains optimal care and a high quality of life and will be very happy there. Staff always were helpful with anything that was needed they were very professional there is a few people I want to give a huge thank you to but I don't know their names. The maintenance man always had a smile on his face and knew about the residents he always talked about their day and knew what their interests were, a sweet woman from nursing staff always happy and upbeat always talking about football and baseball which were two of his favorite things one day I came in later in the evening she was in his room standing next to him watching the baseball game their teams were playing each other and they were cutting up and trash talking each other like two friends, that experience alone warmed my heart and will be one I can cherish forever, lastly was the gentleman from the kitchen always out during mealtimes asking if they enjoyed their meals, if they needed or wanted anything more, and just sitting at the tables with them just listening while they talked. I have never had a bad experience while visiting, it makes me happy knowing that staff really loves the residents.

It's not that diverse, but the people are nice for the most part. My grandmother just didn't like it. She didn't really give it a chance because at week 2, she was ready to leave. I was sad about it, but I couldn't force her to stay. Shawn understood and we moved her out. The only issue I had was after we moved her out, they took $3000+ out of her account that they weren't supposed to. That caused an issue with her bills & I brought that to Shawn's attention immediately. She apologized & said she'd send a paper check. It's costs A LOT to live here, but they have independent living and assisted living available. They are clean, they have activities, they have 1 meal daily included in the monthly rent, and it's a the staff is friendly for the most part. I wish she would've stayed.

After Dad's dementia got worse and he couldn't stay in Assisted Living with my Mom, we made the decision to shift him to the Bay Lake Inspiritas (Memory care unit). This was a hard decision, but we were assured that Bay Lake had the ability to provide proper dementia care for him and to maintain dignity and well-being until the very end. It quickly became apparent that there was trouble at Bay Lake. I'll let the Virginia Department Social Services report tell how the story ends. Read the report in the attached pictures, then go to the Virginia DSS website to look at the rest of the track record. In the end, there were red flags along the way that indicated my 83 year-old Marine veteran father with dementia was not being treated with dignity and his well-being was not the top priority of the Bay Lake. But I wanted to believe that for $9000+ per month (yes...over $108,000 per year) it was money well spent for the Father who spared nothing in caring for his own family. I'm sorry to have let him down and I regret allowing Bay Lake's glossy advertisements and management convince me that they were doing what they said they could do. Don't make the same mistake. In the end, with the help of an Elder Care Consultant, and no help from Bay Lake, we found a place for him and discovered what we thought we would be getting for my Dad at Bay Lake.

Very few staff to care for residents Overwhelming smell of feces and urine Bed bound patients are not protected from active residents Personal belongings are not protected. Items missing on a daily basis Loved one dressed in someone else's clothes often No toilet paper available Hygiene products disappear Room over 80 degrees often. Residents can unplug AC and TV in anyone's unit No assistance with feeding Fall risk ratings not evident. Refusal of incident reports after major fall requiring surgery. These residents are alone and not properly cared for. They are often short staffed and many visits, the State ratios were not followed. It's a massive revolving door of staff and it's rare to see the same person twice. On more than one occasion, I would ask a worker a question, and there response was, "I have no idea, this is my first time here." Some of the residents you walk by in passing look absolutely miserable, and uncared for. I wanted to just go in some of the rooms and just change these poor defenseless people. They have lost their dignity with a skeleton crew to hopefully give them 10 min every few hours. It is the saddest, most heart breaking experience of my life. These people are someone's loved one. After barely 3 months at this facility, our loved one declined so drastically, and after her hospital stay with her broken hip, she was put on hospice. I asked for an incident report and proof that 2 hour checks were completed. I was denied and told that these were internal documents only. Please please, just do your homework. Look into the reviews. Check licensing website to look at the history of serious violations. It's public information and its not pretty! A good facility starts at the top with management that shows care and concern for people's loved ones. You will not get that at this facility. My mother -in-law died as a direct lack of care, and complete non-compliance or following policy and procedures. She went in memory care walking, and months later we are planning her funeral. Take the time and go to Virginia Department of Social Service Assisted Living and look at the violations.

It was a lovely experience, except for the service. We ended up clearing our plates between servings and had to flag down a waiter for water. When we said something to staff as we left, we were told that there was a little confusion in our area. I would certainly go back!

She went above and beyond answering all of our questions, helping us get settled, providing additional toiletries and she even delivered two delicious meals from the Chef. Her efforts created a wonderful atmosphere and made the Chamberlin feel like a home away from home. We had a great time with our family and enjoyed all the interesting and historical sites.
