Our other criteria was a homey feel and a friendly staff. So far my sister and I have been happy with the Bickford. Our mom on the other hand...... but that is to be expected. It is a smaller facility and they allow pets. Food is good and it is warm and inviting. My mom has been there only a couple of days so I will update this later with more info. We definitely learned a lot about assisted livings and it is very overwhelming. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable. Leroy was a huge help on her 1st day.

Shawn (Director) put my grandmother at ease by telling her that she had 30 days to change her mind. After that, she went ahead and moved in. I loved this place for her. It's not that diverse, but the people are nice for the most part. My grandmother just didn't like it. She didn't really give it a chance because at week 2, she was ready to leave. I was sad about it, but I couldn't force her to stay. Shawn understood and we moved her out. The only issue I had was after we moved her out, they took $3000+ out of her account that they weren't supposed to. That caused an issue with her bills & I brought that to Shawn's attention immediately. She apologized & said she'd send a paper check. It's costs A LOT to live here, but they have independent living and assisted living available. They are clean, they have activities, they have 1 meal daily included in the monthly rent, and it's a the staff is friendly for the most part. I wish she would've stayed.

**WARNING-READ THIS BEFORE MOVING YOUR LOVED ONE TO BAY LAKE**…read more After a promising start, things did not end up going well for my Dad or our family at Bay Lake. After Dad's dementia got worse and he couldn't stay in Assisted Living with my Mom, we made the decision to shift him to the Bay Lake Inspiritas (Memory care unit). This was a hard decision, but we were assured that Bay Lake had the ability to provide proper dementia care for him and to maintain dignity and well-being until the very end. It quickly became apparent that there was trouble at Bay Lake. I'll let the Virginia Department Social Services report tell how the story ends. Read the report in the attached pictures, then go to the Virginia DSS website to look at the rest of the track record. In the end, there were red flags along the way that indicated my 83 year-old Marine veteran father with dementia was not being treated with dignity and his well-being was not the top priority of the Bay Lake. But I wanted to believe that for $9000+ per month (yes...over $108,000 per year) it was money well spent for the Father who spared nothing in caring for his own family. I'm sorry to have let him down and I regret allowing Bay Lake's glossy advertisements and management convince me that they were doing what they said they could do. Don't make the same mistake. In the end, with the help of an Elder Care Consultant, and no help from Bay Lake, we found a place for him and discovered what we thought we would be getting for my Dad at Bay Lake.

Unfortunately our lovely experience quickly changed when we arrived to pick up our loved one at a back door (that was required to be used for patient pick up) we were met with trash and a filthy door. This was very alarming. Knowing the precautions being taken by everyone because of COVID 19 I would expect that the mandatory entrance and exit for patients and their belongings would be kept clean and not shared with trash. This is unacceptable for a medical facility, especially knowing that nursing homes are seemingly more susceptible to the COVID 19 virus.

Since my grandma doesn't speak English, they are patient and try their best to make sure she understands, but she has a family member with her at all times, just incase. Most of the nurses here are very nice and I appreciate especially it with my grandma. She gets physical and occupational therapy to help rehabilitate her. The place does feel more like a hospital than an assisted living facility. It is outdated with most of its furniture and fixtures, but my major concern was making sure my grandma was getting the care and attention she needs. Thank you for ensuring that!
