For my introductory class, I signed up for their Core Pilates. It was really difficult to sign up. I had a hard time getting in contact with anyone (it took about 4 attempts). But when I finally did, the sign up process was easy. They had a lot of classes to pick from, including Pilates, Barre and cardio classes. I didn't realize when I signed up that this was a reformer class. I usually do mat Pilates, but there were a few other beginners in the class and the teacher was very patient and nice. The great thing about the reformer machine is that you can turn up or turn down the intensity of the workout according to where you're at. It does take more coordination than I'm used to being on the machine, but it was fun! The teacher helped make adjustments so I could get the maximum benefit, which I appreciated. The Hackensack facility was really nice and big. They had complimentary lockers and towels and the changing room and restroom were both clean. The membership is kind of steep at $279 per month, but they do have discounts for 26 years old and under an 65 years old and over at their other locations.

I had been looking for a place where I could learn yoga and also make some good use of my time. I consider myself blessed for coming across this amazing yoga studio. I have been coming here for the past two years and could not be more thankful to my beautiful instructor Carol Berlin. Her patients, love, help, passion and devotion to her students is incredible. I have found so much in this peaceful studio. Not only have I developed in yoga but I have become a stronger and better person. This place is truly a golden treasure and whoever is looking to learn yoga and help themselves, this is the place. I could not be more thankful to Carol and Freedom Within Yoga for everything it has done for me.

But after leaving a message to make an appointment and getting contacted immediately by the most pleasant person I decided I would go. I went on a monday afternoon when there were no classes in session and was greeted by a warm receptionist I believe was named Alexandria. I was glad that I went and will consider going again even though the facility is a way from my home. I hope to participate in some yoga classes before my next session. I wished I lived closer to this little gem.

To say it's been stressful mentally is an understatement. Along with corrective chiropractic therapy, I decided to take up Yoga to strengthen not only my body but my mind as well. It's now been two months or so and Shiva Shanti has changed my life. The peace, strength, and positive energy I find in each class is amazing. Each teacher is unique in their own way and I've yet to have a negative experience with any of them. I've had class (please note I've only taken beginner and restorative classes) with Niomi, Mary, Sarah, Jordan, Rob, Kristy and Theresa and they are all phenomenal! All of them are knowledgeable, and caring; paying close attention to their students to ensure they are flowing properly. Each ask about injuries to ensure they can assist you in modifying poses so you don't injure yourself further. The space is not big but its never been so overcrowded that I felt uncomfortable. Both, Mary and Felise have dogs - Pipa and Buddha. The dogs are very small and extremely friendly. I personally enjoy their company and haven't had any negative experiences with them. They are adorable and I feel they bring a healing vibe to the class. Finally, I would suggest you take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and come to Shiva Shanti and experience it for yourself. If you don't like it, then you don't have to come back, but if your experience is anything like mine, you won't ever want to leave! Namaste ‍

I haven't done yoga in over a year and Iwona gave me the best pointers. I was looking for a studio that would be physically challenging but a studio that left me feeling mentally clear was of the utmost importance. Shiva shanti is just that! Most NJ yoga studios I have visited tend to be very commercial but Shiva Shanti is authentic and has a community feel. The studio is small and quaint, I personally prefer more intimate classes. Tons of street parking outside the studio as well. I'm hoping to stick to my daily practice and hope all of the other instructors are as great as Iwona!

They often do special events like sound baths and belly dancing among others. Once or twice a year, they host a yoga retreat abroad. This year was to India. They also offer yoga teacher training here. Many of the people who train here actually go on to teach here too. They recently added some new staff from Bamboo Moves, which recently closed down, so they'll be expanding their schedule. My one issue with Pure Bliss is that, because they have so many teachers, there tends to be a lot of variability with the classes. Pure bliss taught by one teacher may be entirely differently than the same pure bliss class with someone else and the difficult level varies tremendously. In general, it's all levels class, but someone's it can be more challenging based on who's in the room and other times it can be very gentle. As I've developed in my practice, I intentionally try to take the classes that will challenge me more. Lateefah, Zeni, Brian and Andrea are good for this. Brian emphasizes more flow in his class. The others are a good mix of both flow and postures. Nancy is good too if you want a more athletic class, but not necessarily as postures focused. Edit: first review should say "gentle hatha yoga" not baths

It was also an extremely deep stretch which my body definitely needed. The class was full of people of all levels. They offer modifications for high level students. I also noticed they offered classes virtually which live streamed during scheduled class times. Their classes are very reasonably priced. They offer an intro 2 week unlimited for $25. They also have a location in Edgewater. Their classes are from as early at 6:30am to the latest being 7:30pm on during the week. They do offer weekend classes 9am to 1pm on Saturday and 8:30am to 1:15 and one 5pm class at the end of the day.

Before working with her, I had never strength-trained. She taught me the mind muscle connection. As a runner with a few imbalances, I really value how she builds in mobility, flexibility, and functional strength so I move and feel better overall. In five months, the progress has been amazing. Monica plans every session thoughtfully, challenging but never overwhelming, and always tailored to my needs. Her coaching style is the perfect blend of clear instruction, supportive energy, and just the right amount of push. What really sets her apart is her holistic approach. As a certified yoga teacher, she brings mindfulness and stress relief into each session, making every workout feel like a full reset. And as a chef with nutrition certification, her advice and meal plans are realistic, sustainable, and never restrictive. I couldn't ask for a better trainer. Monica is knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely dedicated. I highly recommend her.

You need to get the facts straight first before you jump the gun on how friendly Frank was to me because that's simply NOT the case... My ID is 100% valid. Im retired like I told him several times This is what I clearly told Frank a year ago and he said that it was" no issue at all" ..So I ended up coming back to the club a year later to finally join up. He asked me for ID which I showed him, then he started to say oh didn't you come in here a year ago etc, so I said yes I did. He then tells me "oh your ID says retired you can join at the full rate" and "I told you last time that im not giving you the discount we offer ...(that's not true at all ), What he said was that it was NO ISSUE".. He started to examine my ID, hold it up to the light literally about 5 different times ,,,Not sure what that was about...I said Frank, " WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY ID- YOURE EXAMINING IT LIKE ITS A FAKE $100 BILL OR SOMETHING, I said is there an issue?????..and he says " OH NOTHING I WAS JUST LOOKING AT IT. He then continues to say he's not giving me the discount and he told me this last year. I said NO PROBLEM...I was leaving, asked him for my ID back, and he started taking pictures of my ID with his phone... Maybe you can clear that up for me Andrew..what was that about after I said no problem and was clearly leaving the club with my coat on. Why did he start taking pictures of My ID? I mean I could care less that you or him think my ID is not valid, I could care less about any discount, or joining your club..Thats not the point at all.. I just didn't appreciate the way I was treated..PERIOD. Its really as Simple as that..I hope this clears it up for you. My experience was not good.

Neither of us have either had any experience at Yoga but Debra, the beginner class instructor is great. She is passionate, insightful and engaging which makes her classes very enjoyable and we certainly get a lot out of them. The style of Yoga is called Iyengar Yoga and in class we utilize a lot of different props which help you attain the proper poses even if you are not that flexible to begin with so don't be intimidated to try it out. On a side note, my wife wanted to try Yoga because she has heard about its many benefits and wanted a low impact exercise to stay active. I was mainly interested in developing more flexibility and learning to breath better which I have but have also been pleasantly surprised that I sleep better and also lingering back pain that I've had beforehand have disappeared. Debra was late a few times, just like someone else mentioned in another review. She usually went over time too, which is fine for me, but its something to consider if you gotta go somewhere afterwards. I also agree about the snide comments. She comes off as rude, like she is in a rush or something. I personally did not mind, but I could see other people getting thrown off by it. On the bright side, she puts a lot of emphasis on achieving the poses in the proper form, she does demonstrations for every single position, which is great for beginners. It was too slow paced for me. This coupled with her uneasy jumpy attitude did not work for me. But it could definitely work for others. Give it a try, I guess.
