To begin with, before I booked them, I had spoken with both Annie and Aron as I am very cautious about who I hire. I don't recall who I asked between them, but I asked to have the guide assigned to us to give us a call the day before our adventure so we could coordinate. I completely forgot about that request, but they remembered, and Alex (our guide) called me and then, when I didn't answer the phone (because I didn't recognize the number), he texted me and I called him back.
I booked a full day trip for some climbing and hiking with my son (16 years old) and me (though the trip was mostly for my son, who does indoor climbing and has always wanted to do some outdoor climbing). On the morning of the trip, I was a little worried that my son was not going to last through the full 8 hour day and told both him and Alex that we would cut it short if my son was pooped. However, the 8 hours flew by and although my son told me a few times "I'm tired, I think this will be the last," by the time he was halfway through whatever it was, he would forget how tired he was and would finish, saying "what's next?"
I am an overprotective mom, which is part of the reason my son has not previously done any outdoor climbing. He is not interested in top roping - he only wanted to boulder, which is much more unsettling because he is not tied in. I have to say that Alex made me feel really comfortable putting my son in his hands.
First, the company requires that all climbers wear a helmet. My son balked about it at first, but he did it and I think he felt comfortable. (If not, too bad. :) ). For those of you not familiar with climbing, outdoor bouldering is less popular, so there are no specific routes. However, Alex knew the good areas for the climbs, and was able to quickly spot the easy climbs to start my son off. Before my son did any climb, Alex would scope it out (usually even doing it himself) to make sure it was doable. Alex was not only constantly standing near my son, but was constantly spotting him and moving the crash pad as my son moved around the rock. He was also constantly coaching my son, not only by providing him with encouragement, but by giving him suggestions on which holds to use and letting him know when he was missing a hold or how to find the hold. It's kind of hard to explain, but he did absolutely everything I would expect a good guide to do. I tried uploading a video, but, unfortunately, the system would only allow me to upload photos.
He took us to a remote area, so we had the entire area to ourselves, which was fantastic. Because we had the area to ourselves, after my son did some climbing, he was interested in doing some rock scrambling. We wandered around the area going from one mountain of rocks to another with no one in our way. Because I have a bad hip, I would walk with them to the mountain and sometimes go up a little, but it was great that my son felt comfortable enough with Alex that they went off on their own. By the end of the first scramble, the two of them were more like old friends than guide and customer. We joked about the fact that they would intend to go into one spot and then, inevitably, one or both of them would say "oooh, look at that, let's see if we can do that." And they would be off somewhere else. We had a FANTASTIC time.
The one thing I knew about the park was Skull Rock. I asked Alex if we could go there. My son is a great kid and, because he was having so much fun, he wanted to do one thing I wanted to do. So, off we went. As expected, there were a lot of people hanging around Skull Rock, but we waited our turn and Alex took photos of my son and me at the rock. And then he made that trip worth it for my son as well by taking him scrambling. I was able to keep up to a point, but then the two of them went off and you could hear them laughing and talking like buds.
If you are going to book a trip with anyone, definitely give Stone Adventures a call. They are a class outfit and, while I can't speak about all of their guides, they definitely matched us well with Alex. Thanks guys!!!! read more
