Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it's yummy and local and they're the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There's something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! They also do little extra treats like jam and chutney!

Here you'll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground (or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you're trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I've by a weeks worth (2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and 'Text to Pay'

I like to saunter along, barter with the chirpy market folk and pick up various things for my tea - buffalo mozzarellla, honey, jam, crumbly bread and slabs of fresh meat. Don't go there when you're hungry - it's dangerous as you'll come away with twice as much. Head down to Corn Street, near St. Nick's market, every Wednesday 9.30 am -2.30pm.

The focus is on fresh food from local producers; its the farmers themselves that are selling you the goods. There's more or less everything you could imagine finding on a farm, with highlights including the various organic meat stalls (v. expensive) and the fruit stalls later in the summer, when you can get some of the recent strawberry crop People know about their goods and love to talk about it. This isn't a supermarket experience and people are keen to have a chat - it's a bit like being in the countryside, funnily enough. It runs on a Wednesday, so if you're working in the city centre (it's based by St. Nicholas Market on Corn Street) treat yourself in your coffee/lunch break and pick up some crusty bread and cheddar cheese. You'll feel much better than you would queueing up with the other suits, even if it does cost a little bit more.

This wonderful little shop on Fishponds Road is no exception to the mould, offering many healthy alternatives to the public: the breads for example, ranging from delicious homemade granary numbers to gluten-free and other allergy conscious brands, or the wide choice of non caffeine teas. Environmentally friendly cleaning products, bean and sprouting kits, free range eggs and so many more delicious, good-for-you items grace the well stocked shelves. In the corner there's a pin board - a vital place to find out about alternative healings and therapies nearby. This is a conscious store, aware of its footprint and encouraging you to follow suit. Very refreshing and highly recommended.

Raja food stores is another brilliant example of fresh foods, and variety of choice. The one thing that does put me off is that it's on a bit of a main road and there is alot of food on display outside which sort of puts you off wanting to buy it. Don't worry though because there is plenty of choice on the inside so make sure you don't just walk past ... get your but inside! Raja food is a little cheaper than the sweet mart I feel, not massivley though. I think it's always good too have a bit of competition and variety, as everyone gets bored eventually of going to the same shop! Another thing this shop has in it's favour is the colour scheme, I challenge you to walk by and not notice it, I mean after all who can resist seeing a yellow and green shop and not walking in, it takes a strong person I tell you!

Anyway, Raja Food Stores sells a great selection of fresh foods, much like the other stores in the area, so nothing really makes it stand apart from the rest (apart from the Yellow & Green). The guys working in here are very friendly, and the prices of their goods are pretty reasonable. A nice place to browse and pick up a few good deals!
