Not to be distracted by the name they mostly sell fruit and vegetables. One of the more traditional places these guys sell what's in stock at the right time of year. This may seem standard but in the age of the supermarket where, for instance, there are no seasons it feels good to be eating naturally. I've always been happy with the fruit here - not too ripe and squishy, never unripe. With many changing deals and a pleasant and chatty handful of staff, this makes a refreshing alternative to the much larger megaliths down the road.

Pawson's only deal in fruit and veg and their knowledge of the product is second to none. Apart from a few sundry items like the odd jar of local conserve, the shelves are stacked high with the vibrant colours of nature's best. I have never been in when there wasn't a queue, always a sure sign that they keep their customers happy, and keep them coming back. There's limited parking on the street, but most of the customers tend to arrive on foot. The staff are more efficient than they are friendly, but without a moment to draw breath, this is understandable.

With daily offers like five avocados for a quid or two punnets of blueberries for £2.50 there can surely be no reason not to come here. Over a century worth of knowledge and a shop that is always bursting with business - it really does sell itself.
