I love this place! The hot and sour soup is some of the best I've ever had! The sushi is so wonderful and I love to order ginger dressing to dip it in. The grill is expensive. My husband and I went there on our wedding night and spent $60 for the two of us. It was expected though. (Trust me, that was the most we've ever paid for dinner!) Normal run of the mill tappan grill with little to none of the normal theatrics you get when you would eat at this type of restaurant. In my opinion they use far to much margarine in their dishes and everything is much to sweet. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again but if it's what the family wanted and I was in this area again with a craving for some mediocre tappan, this is where I would come. I feel like if they cut out the use of so much margarine and used fresh ingredients and not something that just came out of a jug or jar the over all quality would increase. The sad thing is that will never happen here. This is the south and the "food critics" are few and fair in between and by 12:30 on a Tuesday this place was packed with people waiting for tables. My friends ordered Habachi and I tasted their rice; it was ok Mizu in Alabaster is better. It's really a taste preference I believe. I have eaten at Mizu with the same girl I ate with this day. NEVER received a table. Upon arrival, we were told there was a 25 minute wait for the Japanese side of the restaurant - with 2 families in front of us. But if we wanted Chinese, there was no wait. So we agreed to wait for Japenese. After 45 minutes, I checked in again. The prediction now was an additional hour's wait. And by the way, the hostess now informed me the Japenese side had shut down in favor of a birthday party on the Chinese side. The Japanese side had ZERO customers when I peeked behind the curtain. Chinese-Japanese fusion. Sort of. Stix is an unfortunate amalgamation of Chinese and Japanese restaurants -- not food, but restaurants. This one establishment exists as both a Chinese restaurant on one side and a Japanese teppanyaki style restaurant on the other. Bridging the divide is a bar and a makeshift sushi bar. The Chinese food is typical bastardized fanfare with the all the staples thrown in -- sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, mongolian beef, etc. Here the food would be quickly forgettable if not for the price. It's way too expensive for what you're getting. The Japanese side fares a little better and only by comparison. Stix offers the usual assortment of sushi and sashimi. The teppanyaki items are tasty but nothing you couldn't find anywhere else. Ultimately, you're paying for pretty average food in a lackluster environment. You do have to applaud the owners for their sheer brilliance of putting two mediocre dining experiences together and pandering to the "fusion" cuisine crowd. Horrible experience! I took my daughter to this restaurant last week on her birthday. We did not have a pleasant experience. I begin to order my daughter food from the kids menu at the hibachi. The kids meal clearly states age 10 and under. As I begin to order her food the waiter states this is for kids 10 and under. I said she is 10 today is her 10th birthday. She begins to say in front of my child well she doesn't look 10. I immediately corrected her by saying you can't judge a book by it's cover and neither can you tell me what she is not. She brought her manager and he basically agreed with the waiter saying my daughter doesn't look 10 but he will let her have the kids meal. I'm like sir that's not the point you judging my child and telling me what she is not and hurting her feelings on her birthday. The waiter and manager was very nonchalant about the ENTIRE situation. The manager said well if you are not happy then you can leave. Which really upset me and my family especially daughter because she was looking forward to eating sushi and hibachi for her bday. We left and went to another restaurant and not one time did the waiter question my daughter age but instead he wished her a happy birthday and brought her dessert and really turned her tears into a smile. I would really rate Stix two stars, but I have to nudge it up based upon its surroundings. It is what it is: a sushi restaurant in Birmingham. All of the fish has been trucked or flown-in, and it shows. It's decent, and the chef does what he can with what he has, but it isn't *GOOD* sushi, as anyone who lives on the coast will tell you. I had the yellowtail sashimi and the red dragon roll and they were absolute perfection! It was so good I forgot to snap a picture of my food or check in lol. I have been coming to this location for ten years now. I always order the same thing. Two Godzilla rolls and a yummy roll. The last two times I have come in or picked it up they didn't include the ponzo sauce to dip the yummy roll in. When you ask for "the sauce that used to come with it" they give you eel sauce instead. Then when you complain to the manager they lie and say you requested it and don't even offer anything to make it up to you. The Fultondale location still includes the correct sauce in the order (without having to be asked) so I will be going there from now on. read more

Horrible customer service. BEWARE!!! While visiting the city for business purposes and wanted to treat family to dinner we decided to go to STIX. Our last visit there was uneventful. We had worked up an appetite but had to wait too long for enough of other people to join our party of 5 to be assigned a chef. Of course we figured this process out on our own because no one explained when we arrived. Dinner was ok. Our chef did a great job. When it was time to pay no longer is our waitress assisting us but some Asia woman and man. Both said nothing. She returns and says my dc declined. Of course I knew this was not possible. Amber funds were available. Checked bank acct via app on iPhone to ensure nothing was going on with bank. Two of our guests presented their cards they also declined. What the heck is going on? She then comes and wants to write down our card numbers. Hell no. My husband accompanied her to the cash register to see that the machine is not even connecting to the internet. Immediately a decline paper spit out at the time the cards were swiped. Someone stated they were having internet problems all day. Surely she knew. So why didnt someone say so while we were waiting or at the beginning of our meal....we had plenty of time to run to the ATM to get cash before were were seated. Smh! I've been to a few Japanese restaurants, and this place is pretty decent. The biggest stress is probably hoping you're not seated at the same table as some obnoxious idiot talking about how he's an expert on sushi and Asian cuisine. That's the guy you want to stab with your chopsticks. We lucked out -- no obnoxious people. The Hibachi show was good, with our Chef "Choy?" or whatever his name was. Our server Douglas was great and got a decent tip from us. The food was decent. I've had better, but it wasn't bad. If you have leftovers, don't do what we did. I think I'm tearing up writing this review lol! I'm such a foodie and my gosh every single time I visit Birmingham, Stix is a must. I went for lunch on Saturday and honestly I cannot remember what I ordered; heck it was good too! I try something different from the menu each time. Anyhow, my review is based on the damn sushi!!! Ummm ummm!! Oh my....DEVINE!! We ordered some type of New Orleans sushi from the menu. I cannot find it on the website but all I know is it had crab and crawfish and sweet baby Jesus it was good! I just wish I would've paid attention to what I ordered. If you go and see New Orleans sushi on the menu and it includes crawfish & crab, order it, you will not be disappointed! Oh and the cream cheese wontons were really pleasant (fried to perfection and not to flaky)! Just go!!! Lol read more

What is it that makes us want to watch people prepare our food? Do we feel more of a connection with our food if we see the journey from start to finish? Does it make us feel better to think this makes it fresher? Or do we feel better knowing it wasn't spit in. Whatever the reason, the concept has blossomed in the past decade. From open kitchens to hibachi grills, people love to watch their food being made before their eyes. It calls to us. The call came one evening recently. Being seated right away on a week night is not entirely unexpected, but the laws of a place like this states that if you are the first ones to be seated at a table, you must wait. To pass the time we ordered the steamed dumplings as an appetizer. They came out hot with a side of soy sauce and tasted good. They were not as full as some other dumplings I have had but they were good nonetheless. After the other group was seated and taken care of, we ordered our entrees to prepare for the main event. When you go to a hibachi grill you expect certain things, and Stix meets those expectations. You expect a hot soup with the lonely mushroom floating in the center and you expect a small bowl of salad with a blanket of ginger dressing. The soup was hot and the salad properly dressed. Let me stop here for a moment for a PSA. In case you are unfamiliar with a hibachi grill I feel that I need to warn you. If you cannot eat or if you care about your sodium intake, I would stick to something else. Soy and teriyaki sauce is used on everything. I have yet to run across someone request no sodium but feel free to try. Going back to my expectations from earlier, the grill is where you have another set of them. From the disappearing egg act to the onion ring volcano that moonlights as a choo choo train, they had them all. Somewhere between getting slapped in the face with a flying piece of grilled chicken and the talking shrimp, I decided I should eat. The fried rice is so simple with just egg, rice and soy but it is the key to the dinner. The weight of the portion would cost you an extra fee on an airline. This is America. If it doesn't fill the plate, it's not enough. The teriyaki salmon was my choice of entree. It had just the right amount of sauce and was cooked perfectly. The vegetable trio of zucchini, broccoli and mushroom was cooked well. it still maintained a slight resistance while still being tender. And yes, plenty of soy sauce. I see you purists cringing over there. Overall, it was a pleasant meal. Even the fortune cookie which is usually stale was good. No I will not tell you what my fortune was. Here is the thing. You expect certain things when you go to a place like this, and Stix delivers. The food is good and and the atmosphere is fun and the place is clean. Traveling from out of state, staying at the hotel next door, this restaurant seemed to be a good idea. Male Host at front door was rude. Waiter was extremely helpful, but rushed us the entire time. Delicious! My handsome man and I went here for a romantic dinner. We were sat at a table facing the grill and started off with a sun money cocktail which was refreshing and crisp. My dear choose two sushi rolls, a New Orlean's and a Shrimp tempura. The New Orlean's roll was scrumptious, filled with shrimp, cream cheese and yamagobo, topped with crispy crawfish. The onion soup was a clear broth with scallions and a button mushroom. The ginger salad was spicy and tangy. We chose steak and shrimp hibachi with an updated filet for our steak. A few moments later our own private chef approached with a cart full of yummy ingredients. He started off with dancing an egg on the grill and then the spatula, eventually tossing the egg into his chef hat. He sauté the steak and shrimp, fried rice and mixed vegetables using the flames to cook the egg that was rolled out of his had onto the hot grill. Our chef was a true showman. Our service was awesome. We were catered to like VIP guest, and had a wonderful experience. This will now become "our" special place to celebrate important moments in life. Quaint, cozy and romantic. Hey since I been here an HOUR waiting on a table that was promised in 30 minutes I may as well write a review. Its Friday night and busy of course. We used to eat here all the time and I never remember a wait this long. We have checked in 3 times which doesnt seem excessive enough to get black balled on getting a table. I checked online for reservations and the website said nothing about taking reservations. They didnt show up on open table either. Maybe its my fault but a perfect meal at this point will not convince me to ever come back. Total time to get the table was hour an 15 minutes. Word of warning IF THEY TELL YOU 30 minutes it actually means 75 minutes. read more
