Stix has been a family favorite for almost 20 years now! My oldest daughter wanted to come here each year for her birthday, and then my son took up the tradition on his birthdays as well. The hibachi is always delicious. I've tried the steak, shrimp, salmon, and scallops and everything is fresh and tasty and cooked to perfection in front of you. I also enjoy the fried rice and vegetables. The sushi is also delicious. My son always gets the California roll, but my favorite is either the red Dragon roll or the New Orleans roll, which comes covered in tempura flakes and pieces of crawfish... Scrumptious! Reopened under new management. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived and were seated at 6:15. I was surprised by how unprepared they seemed to be for dinner. We were short a plate and asked for one but it just didn't seem to happen so we grabbed one from the other table. There weren't any napkins or silverware on the table yet so we asked for those. The server asked if it was ok if we just used plastic. If I'm spending 30 some dollars for hibachi, I want to eat it with a real fork, not a tiny plastic one. She also handed out paper napkins instead of the cloth ones and the paper napkins were bar napkins not even full size ones. The wait for a chef to cook our food was very long. I was thankful I ordered the spring roll appetizers. Those who ordered sushi, got their rolls quick. I was sorry I didn't order that as I mine didn't arrive till the chef finally did. The soup and salads didn't even seem to be ready and we had to wait a long time for those a well. Needless to say I was getting hangry after over an hour wait for food. Our chef was very nice and kept apologizing for our grill as it didn't seem to be working properly. Once we started getting food, I was happy. My spring rolls were very good. The fried rice was excellent. My chicken and veggies were good as well. My shrimp was another story. Some of the pieces were very fishy and tasted old. I absolutely love this place. The wait can be kind of tedious, but it's with it. We came here on a Sunday for my nephews birthday. The wait was about 45 minutes for the hibachi side. Let's talk about portion size. OMG you with plenty of leftovers. I ordered a kids shrimp meal for my daughter and as you can see in the picture it looks like an adult plate! I ordered both along with Udon noodles with chicken. The lunch options and prices could be more competitive. I wish they offered bento boxes during lunch. This is my all time favorite hibachi restaurant. I've been eating here for around 13 years and the service has always been top notch. They have a Chinese and a Japanese (hibachi) side to the restaurant. A pro tip: if you love hibachi but have seen the show too many times, if you don't like eating with strangers or if you're tired of the chefs throwing shrimp at your face. I'd suggest going to the Chinese side where it's normal booth seating and ordering hibachi from there. They prepare it in the kitchen and bring it out to you as a finished product. I've tried everything on the hibachi menu. Everything is delicious but when I want to splurge, my go to is fillet and scallops. Don't forget to ask for yum yum sauce (orange). Stopped here in on Sunday to have dinner with the family and I wasn't sure of what to expect. Other restaurants like this around here have disappointed me in the past but I was willing to give them a try. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the server seated us and asked for our drink order. The menu was your standard hibachi menu. We started out with the soup and salad. The soup was really good and had just a little kick to it. The salad was your average salad. We had the steak, chicken, scallops, shrimp and your vegetables and fried rice. Our cook was very entertaining and made sure we had enough food. Our portions were a nice size. He did a great job in preparing our food and made sure there was no cross contamination. We used to like coming here.... After last nights experience.... Not sure we will ever be back. We had reservations for 6pm but part of our party had not shown up. They finally got there at 6:15. We were seated by 6:20 that's when it all started to go wrong. The hostess was getting plates for our table, which I thought was very odd. Once we were sat down I noticed I was the only one with out a plate... I asked the waitress for a plate when she came for our drink order. She came back with the drinks but no plate. We also asked her for utensils since there was only 1 person at our table with them... she stated she would have to go back and roll them to bring them out.. she asked if we could use plastic utensils... most of us had to us plastic to eat with... and for napkins she brought out some napkins and the rest were drink napkins..... I am sorry but the amount of money these folks charge.... This is very poor service. The chef came out at around 7:20.. also they did not bring the soup and salad until the chef came out... the chef was at the table... now onto the rest of the fiasco. Our grill was not operating properly so the grill did not get as hot as usual... we finally got served at 7:40... I ordered the filet and shrimp double rice no vegetables... he served the rice first, then steak.... A pause while he cooked the chicken and scallops.... All the while the vegetables were pushed off to the side.. he finally got to the shrimp.. this is where it dropped below 3 stars.... The shrimp was mixed with fresh and OLD.... So we basically paid for fresh but got something we could not eat.... Needless to say the new owners need to get their act together if they want to stay open... read more

Not only was service bad, the food was really expensive and to top it off it was disgusting! The service was forgetful and unfriendly. The menu had no nutritional info (none online either). The ginger salad was so gross, it tasted like mayonnaise with a hint of ginger. My brother's food came out a solid 10 mins before my APPETIZER! The rice was absolutely awful and the sushi appetizer that I ordered was definitely NOT fresh. I've been ordering sushi for 20+ years and I have never been served raw fish that had been frozen! This place is amazingly good! It has hibachi style dining, so the food is fresh and hot of course. They season everything so well and you get a very nice helping! First timers here. We've sat through yawner Hibachi Shows over the years so we just asked for a booth. Good thing. We were seated immediately and walked past dozens of famished patrons waiting to see shrimp fly through the air onto their plates. I had a nice tall carafe of hot sake. I haven't eaten here in awhile and I missed it. Stix is one of the oldest Japanese teppanyaki restaurants in Birmingham. I have eaten here many times but this is my first opportunity to write a Yelp review. They are located in the popular Hoover Galleria on the "outer ring" between Sears Auto Center and Fed Ex Kinkos. Upon entering you can go Left for traditional sit down meals or go Right to the Teppanyaki side and have your food prepared in front of your eyes. To me that's one of the appeals of eating this way. You get to see your food cooked from scratched right in front of you. We went early on a Friday and were seated in few minutes at one of their many U shaped tables. Before our cook arrived, Tammy ordered a glass of plum wine and I ordered their lettuce wraps. I thoroughly enjoy their lettuce wraps. The lettuce was so fresh it was still "wet". Biting into it wrapped around the warm chicken concoction was delicious. Our cook soon arrived and he wasn't quite as entertaining, but he did a good job preparing our food. We enjoyed his show including the egg toss into his hat, the big opening flameout and the onion ring volcano turn choo choo train. Next came our miso soup with large slices of mushrooms and the delicious cucumber dressing salad. Everyone else ordered the steak except me. I got the salmon with a side of shrimp. The first thing they cook here is the rice. I absolutely love the way Stix makes their fried rice. It's quite simple... fresh cooked rice, sesame seeds, soy sauce mix, fried eggs, salt, pepper and butter... lots of butter. He then cooked all the steaks. The family all like their steaks medium rare and our cook delivered. Next was my shrimp. It was cooked perfectly. I would know. I watched him cook it. Finally my large filet of salmon was placed on my plate. Watching him cook it made me want it even more. The cook on it was perfect and then he gently sauteed it with teriyaki sauce. He then delivered the vegetable medley of onions, brocolli and zucchini. Ending the performance was the traditional "shrimp toss" into your mouth. I'm proud to report that only Sarah and I were successful in catching a shrimp in our mouths! The price can be a little pricey, but I've always walked out with leftovers... enough for another meal. If you've been to enough Japanese teppanyaki/habachi restaurants you will realize that they're all pretty similar. They differ in the experiences you have in each. Stix has changed owners, but they appear to have kept their standards high. They would have to with a competitor Sumos right across the street at Patton Creek Shopping center. I'm glad I chose Stix for my birthday dinner. I hope I get to come back again sooner. read more

I have been eating at Stix for over 10 years and I ate there today and it was the worst meal I ever had there! I had the Hibachi Filet and I ordered it medium well and it came back raw and they did recook it for me but after paying extra for the Filet upgrade the Steak was like eating tough rubber and couldn't chew it, I spit out 80% of it as I couldn't eat it. There produce Quality is way down not like before! I loved eating here but now I am scared to go back! I hope they will buy better quality steak and train there cooks better read more

You can never go wrong with stix! Just don't sit at the hibachi table if you don't have time to wait it takes more time. the only down side to sitting in the regular dinning area is you don't get as much food as you do on the other side. read more

I was very surprised to see this restaurant was not a 4 1/2 star at least. I have eaten at all restaurants in the area that are similar style where the hibachi style preparation is done and this one is by far the best in Birmingham. Atmosphere is great, the food is very tasty. But the quality of the food just seems better then the others in this area. I do think if your going there to eat try to do the hibachi side as that side just has more of a flare. Also a key point... you can make a reservation for parties of seven or more but not for less and this gets you seated pretty quick.
