I was very surprised to see this restaurant was not a 4 1/2 star at least. I have eaten at all restaurants in the area that are similar style where the hibachi style preparation is done and this one is by far the best in Birmingham. Atmosphere is great, the food is very tasty. But the quality of the food just seems better then the others in this area. I do think if your going there to eat try to do the hibachi side as that side just has more of a flare. Also a key point... you can make a reservation for parties of seven or more but not for less and this gets you seated pretty quick. I ordered steak and shrimp, and the steak was way to salty. I like salt but this was ridiculous. Service was pretty slow took 10 mins to get my soup and salad that come with the hibachi dinners. Other similar places 2-3 mins. They were not busy either so I'd hate to think how long had they had a large crowd. Very over priced as well. Very, very good! Stix has the best fried rice in Alabama. It has no corn! So many Asian restaurants around B'ham are putting corn in their fried rice now and it drives me crazy. We ordered the spring roll appetizer, which was really delicious. It was hot and fresh, and I nearly burned my tongue trying to eat it, but it was so good I couldn't stop! Shrimp fried rice for our entree, which is the best, as I already said. Whitley, our waitress, was very nice and attentive. She made sure that we were well taken care of and left happy. Normal run of the mill tappan grill with little to none of the normal theatrics you get when you would eat at this type of restaurant. In my opinion they use far to much margarine in their dishes and everything is much to sweet. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again but if it's what the family wanted and I was in this area again with a craving for some mediocre tappan, this is where I would come. I feel like if they cut out the use of so much margarine and used fresh ingredients and not something that just came out of a jug or jar the over all quality would increase. The sad thing is that will never happen here. This is the south and the "food critics" are few and fair in between and by 12:30 on a Tuesday this place was packed with people waiting for tables. Came here for dinner with family. It was a Friday night but we were able to get in without a reservation. This is a Japanese restaurant with hibachi style dining. They also have a regular restaurant with booths. We sat on the hibachi side. This is the typical hibachi where they cook in front of you. I ordered the chicken teriyaki. To start, you are given an onion soup. The onion soup was good but I ate around the mushrooms. Next, you are given a ginger salad. It was delicious. I always love these types of salads at Japanese restaurants. My chicken teriyaki came with rice and vegetables. But, I like that they let you substitute vegetables for double rice here. I did that and was able to get two meals out of it. Overall, the food was great. I am biased because I have yet to find a hibachi as good as the one near my house (in PA), but overall I really enjoyed it. Our chef did a great job, did all the cool tricks. We used to love this place. This last time we went will be the last time. First off we go to the left side where they have booths (like we always have). There were only 3 other tables that had people sitting in them on a Saturday at 1. I thought it odd but oh well. We waited 10 min before we ever saw our server. She took both our drink and food orders at that time. Note: all the staff were dressed inappropriately, wearing sweatpants, athleasure wear, and/or house slippers. We saw our server again when she brought our salad and soup. Then our food came and was delivered by a different server (which is ok). We get the exact same thing every time and love it but this time the hibachi chicken was chewy and the fried rice did not taste good. So after we finished we waited for our server to come back for another 10 min or so, mind you we haven't seen her since she brought our salad and soup. I decided I would stand up to see if I could spot her on the other side of the booth and she is in another booth talking with co-worker. The food is great whether you're picking it up or dining in! I used to always say the Stix in Fultondale is good but Hoover has them BEAT. You get large portions and the hibachi chefs make sure you have a good time while in there. I'm pretty sure sitting at a regular table is just as good as at the hibachi table. The only take away I can give them is COVID guidelines. The hibachi area is not that big so that has everyone crowded and not safely "socially distancing". What's not to love about stixs!!!! My finance and I always go for the hibachi nothin like getting a show and some shrimp thrown at your face. The service sizes as stix are always very generous and the chef usually cooks more than required so volunteer for some extra grub when you have an appetite. I usually go with the chicken and shrimp whilst my lady goes for shrimp and scallops. Both are always cooked well and to satisfaction. The drink selection is fantastic, they have ice cold Sapporo, one of my favourite beers which is a big plus. They also have a fantastic cucumber saki which I vouch for. Service is usually good except the drinks can come out a bit slow. Also remember you can get double rice or double vegetables and/or double soup or double salad. We were seated fairly quickly for a Friday night and the drinks came soon after. The show was as entertaining as any I've seen. The meats were very good. The shortfall started with the rice being a bit bland. The cook forgot our sons rice and vegetables all together. When we were finished, the waitress was rushing us out (which I understand to an extent because there were a lot of people waiting) but it was made obvious. The worst part is that even though we were made to feel rushed, it took forever to get our check. This was my first time eating here. The food was good. But here is where it went totally wrong for me. The cook was stereotyping all the people at the table. One incident was that he assumed my boyfriend has marijuana because he has locs and he is African American. Other comments were said as well to other people at the table. This place was an utter disappointment. Although the restaurant had space and seating available we waited on a table longer than 20 minutes when told it would take 5. The service was poor. It took another 10+ minutes for our server to bring water. She also failed to clear the table when we were done with the soup and salad. When the cook finally showed up he seemed grumpy, the entire experience was anticlimactic compared to what was going on at the next table. The standard spicy tuna roll was very tiny and not as spicy as I would have liked, but it may have just been a onetime mistake. The other roll I had was a spider roll which was delicious. I went here for a business meeting and the person I met chose the place so I just went with it. If I could have chosen somewhere else I would have. We were seated immediately on the "Asian" side and our waitress came to the table and took our drink/appetizer order quickly. She was attentive without being overbearing. No complaints with the service. It was happy hour, so we decided to try the chicken lettuce wraps and the bang bang chicken. Both were very tasty. I ordered the chicken lo mein and my husband ordered the honey shrimp. We both enjoyed our entrees. The taste of the food reminded me a lot of PF Chang's. So it's nice to know that I have an alternative that doesn't require going into the Summit. The cost was typical of a higher end Asian restaurant. I really enjoyed the mongolian combo and the spring rolls. The only thing I thought was absurd was an hour before closing we had staff cleaning up around us! If your restaurant hours are until 9:30pm you should wait! I managed to block the servers stacking chairs out of my peripheral but still was disappointed by this.
