Do not come here for the sushi. It's below average : thick cuts, not buttery texture, didn't seem super fresh. However, the Ramen is what they know! I had the chicken Ramen and it definitely was the best I've had anywhere. The broth was delicious as were all the fresh ingredients, scallion, onion, potato's , white meat chicken, and the noodles. As someone who lived in Tokyo for almost a year this find made me so happy. From the discernment I gained from my time in Tokyo, at first glance I could tell it would be a good Japanese restaurant lol. Definitely authentic delicious Japanese food. We had some tasteful appetizers which I recommend to just get what you like getting. Then we had the duck ramen and that was actually one of the most memorable dishes in my life. Very Umami and savory but how the duck was cooked was unreal. The duck had a perfect smoky taste along with the savory broth it was bathing in. Lastly we had the matcha ice cream with red bean paste. There's a joke that asian parents say "Not too sweet!" when they love a desert and I couldn't help but think of that when tasting lol. That's to my liking too probably because i got more used to less sweet food outside United States. I thought the flavor was balanced really well. Also aduki is one of my favorite sweet things lol. We did not have sushi so can't speak to that, but sometimes sushi is not a Japanese restaurant focus or star dishes but often foreigners are most familiar with it when thinking of Japanese food. I recommend to explore outside of sushi in general at Japanese restaurants. All in all definitely coming back when in the area and can't wait to take the rest of my family. Was really happily surprised that this was an authentic Ramen restaurant, "legit" as you kids say. Having spent a lot of time in Japan I can say that. The large collection of Sake choices backs that up. The owner is Japanese and he runs a tight ship. My Tonkatsu Ramen was just like from a Ramen-Ya in Shibuya Station. Although I was a fan of Stirling Sake for quite a while, the last three or four visits have been consistently disappointing enough that I would now call this place average at best. The sake selection continues to be good, and the seasonal tempura is always excellent, but all else has been just "meh," and the price point here is too high for "meh." I picked up a salmon and salmon roe rice bowl with avocado the other day ($28); it was missing the avocado and the salmon had pieces of bone in it. The service and atmosphere always feel disorganized, and the menu has not really been refreshed in any way in at least a few years. read more

Excellent sushi, but we won't be returning. This was our third visit. One the first we left after 45 minutes because no one took our order despite multiple requests. The second visit was perfect. On our most recent visit dishes were brought out incomplete and at 10-15 intervals for the same course in the same party. We felt that no one was managing the restaurant and / or expediting service. What a find in Greenport! We've been wanting to try Stirling Sake out for the last few years and finally had the opportunity! We were the first to arrive for lunch on a quiet weekday. A beautiful establishment and we were well-taken-care-of by the server who might have also been the owner? Spouse tried the sake tasting and enjoyed very much, including all the detailed information the server imparted about each drink! I had their hot green tea which was beautiful and so flavorful. Best hot green tea I've had! We tried a number of items from the menu since this was our first time here and wanted to explore. We started with the crispy vegetable gyoza and the sweet chili shrimp with local greens. Both were amazing! I tried the Temari Shiitake Sushi roll, which essentially was two delicious balls of rice infused with strips of mushrooms, then wrapped in a soy paper speckled with sesame seeds. An amazing culinary and textural experience! Spouse enjoyed the tuna sashimi! We shared the Tonkotsu Pork Ramen bowl which was delicious and rich. I appreciated that they used pork broth from the local 8 Hands Farm. To finish off, we shared the green tea ice cream with azuki bean. Wonderful! Thanks to Yelp we were happy to find a sakecentric (new word?) authentic Japanese restaurant in Greenport. We were quickly seated at a spacious outdoor table by Connor who took care of us beautifully throughout the meal. I would have liked to meet the owner Mori-san to talk about sake but he never came out, maybe he was busy in the kitchen. We each got a flight of junmai sake to start, served in 3 cute lil cups placed on laminated mats with written explanations of each sake, a nice touch. I had never seen rose sake (made with red yeast) before, can't say I was a fan of the taste but glad I got the opportunity to try it. Spring rolls were lightly fried and very good. The fresh seaweed salad was made with unique ingredients including white seaweed, came with a tangy homemade dressing on the side. However the sushi was just OK and overpriced even by NYC standards. Half of the yellowtail in my rolls had noticeable bright red blotches (see pic) that had not been trimmed away; not an appetizing look. In fact I've never seen that before in all my years of eating sushi in Japan and elsewhere. Also the fish was cut in jagged irregular pieces, not a biggie but aesthetically unpleasing and not the Japanese norm either. Hubbie's sashimi rice (chirashi) bowl was good but very small at $38.00 with an upcharge for avocado. Good experience overall but would order the ramen or other cooked dishes next time. read more

I recently have become interested in Japanese cuisine and love Ramen noodles. So while in Greenport I found this restaurant right down the street from my hotel and was eager to try it. The atmosphere was welcoming and zen. The table setting was perfect. I ordered the special Sweet Potato Tempura as an appetizer and the beef ramen for dinner with a saketini. The staff was so charming and the best part was that they had computer tablets to show you what the food looks like. The food was amazing and the portions were large. I tried Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream for the first time and loved it! It was a highlight in my trip and am looking forward to going back soon! read more

Really delicious! Ramen and sushi were very fresh and flavorful. Great drink recommendations as well! Parking was convenient on the street. The service was excellent although did feel a bit slow considering there was only one other party when we arrived. (Maybe short staffed that day? Either way was not a big deal.) Variety seaweed salad was different and I loved the various textures of seaweed mixed in with greens. Sashimi platter was fresh and delicious. Even had local caught fluke sashimi that is caught by former chef/fisherman Japanese native Akio Kon. Spider roll was delicious and huge portion of crab. Yes this place is expensive compared to other Japanese restaurants, but there isn't anything else like it. What makes Stirling unique is their vast sake menu that welcomes both amateur and professional sake drinkers. You can find a really good sake for all price ranges. Or of course beer or wine for those who don't want sake. The service here is great too. If you order multiple small dishes, they stagger the service just right, and in a smart order. And the quality of food is amazing!!! I like that they always have specials too. I'm a sucker for the yellowtail scallion roll--even though I can get it anywhere, it's REALLY good here. This was my second visit to the chef's Omakase night on August 22nd. I have eaten there several times before, I am a local who lives half the year in Greenport. I am not a flyby tourist. My first experience at the Omakase night was an adventure...a new experience. We opted for the sake dinner with sakes designed to enhance the food. The general comments of my companions was that both the food and the sake were sparse. We were disappointed that the Main course was porgy. Porgy runs abundantly here and is the cheapest fish that one can purchase...but hey it was about the experience. Last Monday I brought my grandson who is a true to the bone foodie. He too wanted the experience. I did the sake dinner again, he did not. I was shocked and disappointed that the main dish , once again, was porgy. They left some of the skin on the fish... not desirable.. they once again had CHEAP porgy. I clearly expressed my disappointment with the porgy and he offered some additional sake...the cheapest sake on the menu. I use that one to marinate fish, for some dishes, that I make at home. We had a great dinner at Sterling sake last night. Eda constructed an inventive drink involving a Japanese liquor. I had an incredible maki composed of squash salmon avocado, an exotic herb curb and no rice. We shared the marvelous house salad and a sterling bowl of noodles and a Dashi broth with shrimp tempura. went in tonight with my boyfriend for our anniversary. we walk in, unaware a reservation was needed. the woman with the accent acted like she was doing us a favor by letting us even step foot in the place. she asked if we had a reservation and we said no, so she told us we could sit at the bar. we looked at eachother for a second before deciding it was okay but she gave us the rude "make a decision" look. she sits us down and just throws the menus down onto our area. when we ordered she snatched the menus from our hands, we told another staff member her actions who proceeded to tell her what had happened. she confronts us in a rude manner and says it "wasn't her fault". she gives us a half-ass apology and we left, couldn't even stand her enough to continue our meal. read more

Really good "find". We drive by it on the way to another restaurant. We love Japanese - ramen, sushi and sake - though wondered how good or different it could be from the others. The staff is friendly and both times (Saturday and Friday, respectively) were not crowded. We probably scared the waitress as we devoured the salad, gyoza, edamame, yellowtail tartare, three duck ramens, and three maki rolls - spicy salmon, eel, and rainbow. We tried some sake the second time and forgot the name. Both times we enjoyed the friendly service and consistency of the food and time intervals between dishes. Big recommendation. It is over-priced and I feel like I have had better sushi from a supermarket. If you know good sushi, you will not be happy here. I tried this place tonight for the first time. Got 7 pieces of sushi, plus a tuna roll for $48 plus tip. Had a tea with my meal and dropped $60 and wasn't even full when I left! The decor is nice and they played cool music. But seriously, even if Nobu himself made that sushi for me personally, it isn't worth what they charge there. I brought it up to the waitress and she defended the quality of the fish and all that, but I eat a few blocks away all the time Sakura and they only charge $20 for 10 pieces of sushi, and a California roll, plus they include soup and salad free! Seriously, Stirling Sake is not worth the money they charge. I know top sushi when I eat it. I did food PR in NYC for almost 20 years. read more

Went to this restaurant with some co-workers for dinner. One coworker requested a recommendation on a Sake (it was her first time trying it and the list of Sake on the menu was extensive). The waitress asked what style she was looking for ( full bodied versus fruity) and then said "ok ill think about it". She never shared with us what she picked out and served my colleague. Service was very slow. From getting our food to getting the check. The food was good and the menu is somewhat limited. Prices were average to a little high considering the limited menu. Haikei sushi fans, amazing place for authentic sushi. I was definitely more than surprised when I walked though the traditional noren fabric door curtains into this beautifully decorated restaurant with the cool vibes of Japanese anime projected on the wall. The quality and presentation far surpassed my expectations. I had the best seaweed salad that I've ever had. It consisted of about four different types of seaweed and was served with a very fresh, definitely house made, ginger dressing. The big eye spicy tuna was amazing as was the ceviche. I will definitely be returning to this location after one of the most pleasant dining experiences I've ever had in town. High quality Japanese restaurant using fresh local ingredients. According to Yuki Mori, the owner, the fish is from Braun's in Cutchogue. He is the Sake expert but did not give us any information on the Sake and just took our order. Since it was a Monday night and we were the only customers he could have elaborated on the Sake drink list. The sakes we tried were very good. We had the Sugei junmai 6 ounce $11 and another Sake that I can't remember the name for 6 ounces at $12. Be careful some of the Sakes are very expensive. If you are not familiar with sake start with the lower priced sakes and asked about flavor. Some have Chili or citrus flavor added to the sake. I have no complaints about the food. The fish was fresh. I tried the ceviche appetizer which was very good with a nice presentation. I love the attention to detail regarding the pottery they use to serve various dishes. No plastic cups here. All of the noodle soups were very good. There are only 4. One is a shrimp tempura, another is a tofu noodle soup which is light on the tofu but very good. Another is beef flavored which has a beefy, fatty flavor. The fourth one that we did not try was Tonkatsu ramen which is pork based with braised pork belly and a soft boiled egg. I think I'll try that during the cold days of winter. They did a fantastic job renovating the space. It has a modern Japanese restaurant feel. They also show old Japanese movies on the wall without sound. Great addition to Greenport. read more
