So far a 3 for cleanliness but not designed for romance by far. Parking is tough I waited for the guy with high end car to leave and then city side walk parking for you and your date! We opted to walk into town to eat. Shower is small by far but towels were clean and water ran hot. I can go to a two star for the TV not working or should I say the dirty remote was not doing what it should. Blinds are not functioning but managed to prop a side for ventilation. Stayed in Room 7 for one night on July 4 (4 days ago). I had called that morning to check room availability, I left a message and Frodo called me right back. He was awesome and accommodating. Frodo mentioned that the room was small, which we were okay with. We were going to Stinson for the beach and outdoors, not to be cooped up in a room. The room was super clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. I laid down at 7P (I was merely napping) and ended up waking up at 7A! The bed was so comfortable it sucked me in and didn't let me go till 12 hours later! The next morning Frodo asked us how we slept and if everything was okay with the room. Egads. Someone overhaul this place already. The manager is sweet but the place is very bad. We liked the simple accommodations 10 years ago but clearly this place is in disrepair. I slept poorly due the following: 1) the door to the room stuck so badly i worried about needing to escape in the event of an emergency. 2) the window screen popped off twice so I did have an emergency escape plan. 3) my small car was wedged in so tightly that I was worried about being blocked in. 4) there is no way to secure the room from the inside; there is a deadbolt but anyone with a key could enter. 5) the bedding was dispicable. Stained, not fresh smelling. I get simple accommodations in a beach town but this place needs to be inspected for safety and health code violations. read more

I was forced to stay in Stinson last-minute last weekend to visit some relatives from far away. As you may know there is virtually nowhere else to stay in the whole Stinson area other than ridiculous Air BNB's for hundreds per night, or all the way back in Mill Valley. Stinson Beach Motel used to be one of my favorite getaways 20 years ago; it was small but darling and convenient. I didn't even check there, assuming on a beautiful Indian summer weekend it would have been booked weeks ahead. Imagine my surprise to see they had multiple vacancies. Well, after I read the vicious reviews of this place, I understood why. After some soul searching I booked it with trepidation and was determined to write a full and honest review. Could it really be that bad? I didn't want to pay the cost ($175 for one Friday night) but had no choice. That's a lot of money for the smallest room there. Expecting a toxic dungeon, we packed a full box of cleaning supplies, towels and a sleeping bag. Well what we got was a room so tiny we had to walk around the queen sized bed one at a time. There was a TV on a cheap dresser and the bed, period. The floor was covered with a borderline grimy indoor outdoor carpeting, we kept our flip flops on at all times. Ready to cringe, we entered the bathroom to see the horror. The door to the bathroom is so small I had to turn sideways. I'm a 6'2" male but quite slim. Well, the bathroom was microscopic and cold but not toxic, moldy or smelly. The shower is just a pipe sticking out of the wall and took forever to get lukewarm but the bathroom was pretty clean. Towels and soap were provided but were small and cut-rate. After reading about dirty sheets I feared for the worst. I pulled back the covers and inspected the linens. The sheets were stained and thin, but were obviously clean and just changed. Bed was eh, brought my own pillows. We decided to forego the sleeping bag and sleep in the bed. As I said the room is a clapboard box, the folks in the room next to us were so clearly heard talking through the wall it could have been cardboard. There was a small space heater on broken wheels we used to stay warm. It was a typical $25-40 room you might see in a crappy motel on I-5 or something (for $175) Carl was nice when we cam and left, nobody died or caught Ebola, we slept, it sucked, it was a ripoff, but not a complete disaster. read more

I really wanted to like this place, because I love all the other hotels in Stinson, and I am an easy-going, open-minded person. I like the greek coloring scheme, and the flowers... It's cute. I wanted to to like it, i really did. Unfortunately, we had a sort of weird and extremely awkward first experience. The guy who was working name was Carl (maybe it would be different if we talked to Frodo, because how can you not like someone named after a hobbit?), and at first he (Carl) was pretty much as unwelcoming as a person can be. It was almost like he was discouraging from staying here. "A room? I guess. We have a couple open... What's the registration on your car? You know it's going to be 95 bucks right?" After we assured him we indeed want a room for two nights, he showed us Room 3. Room 3 had this cute little Hobbit-hole feel (hahar) with this circular flower entrance to it. Outside, cute as a freaking button. But inside, it's just this gross little room with literally, a bed, a tiny TV, stained blue carpet and a tiny bathroom. Really, 95 bucks? Okay, Stinson motels are overpriced in general, and we are going to be mostly not staying in the rooms anyway, and I'm really truly not picky... We are desperate at this point anyway, because Stinson is booked at all the other motels and our heart is set on staying for a few days, so we tell Carl we will take it. Afterwards Carl is totally preoccupied with the size of our car, and though we parked at the other end of town, insists we show it to him before renting us the room. Mind you, there were three parking spots open. My fiance goes to grab the car and I'm stuck with Carl. I try to make some small talk to pass the time, I ask "Soooo... Busy this time of year, huh?" to which he replies "Not really." I try a couple other unsuccessful attempts at small talk and after some awkward silence Carl says "WHERE did you park?" After what seems like an eternity my fiance comes back with the car, and the car apparently meets Carl's standards. Carl encourages to pay for one night at a time because we "might change your mind, I don't want to do any refunds or nothing like that." Carl reluctantly charges our card, and tells us it's non-smoking and no cats. My fiance jokingly says, "Wow, people actually bring cats?" and Carl yells back "NO CATS." He gives us back our card and says "you have the keys right?" Um, no... we don't. You have to give us keys first in order for us to have them. Apparently the maid has them and we have to track her down and ask for them. I know this motel has a few rooms that look better (I've looked at the website) but Room 3 as well as most of the other rooms are just not worth the money. And, though Carl eventually was somewhat civil, with a welcoming like that we did not want to stay another night. Really, Carl did us big favor having us only pay for one night, because after our night here we decided we were going to look for ANYWHERE else we can stay. We ended up discovering the Redwood Haus Bed and Breakfast next door, which (though the room was equally tiny) was almost half as cheap and infinitely more welcoming, AND has free breakfast and movies. I didn't even stay at this hotel...just called for reservations. It took me calling 6 times on a Tuesday afternoon in February to get someone on the phone. And when I did the guy was SUCH A JERK...I would never call this place back to stay here ever!! First off when he finally did answered the phone he picked it up and said "YA!"...not the name of the hotel just simply...ya...really?? Then I just asked if they had a room available for the weekend. The guy said back to me "NOPE" very very rudely and hung up on me. If their customer service is this bad over the phone I can't even begin to imagine how much it sucks when u get there! read more

God I love this Motel. It's just the place to unwind at. The rooms are small, but very cute & clean. I stayed here last summer with my two kids. When we were on are way to the beach,-that is a short walk away. The Manager Frodo was super nice to both my kids.You can tell he loves kids. He was sweeping up the courtyard and took the time to stop and say hello the my kids. Then he started doing these great voice sounds, just like the cartoons. Anyway that was cool for my kids. I would stay here anytime. I felt a good vibe. The Manager Frodo is a high energy nice guy. The other reviews about him I don't get. I take them with a grain of salt. Happy customer! read more

The rooms are clean. The foliage is as nice as it looks on their website (at least it was when I was there in the spring and summer). The manager is weird, but harmless (Frodo). If your looking for a cozy and quaint place to stay on the beach, this is it. This place is a great price, just a stroll away from awesome little shops, good homemade food, and not to mention, THE BEACH! The owner was very sweet as well. He was unable to take my reservation so I promised I'd be there before closing. But with my horrible sense of direction I got lost and wasn't able to make it until an hour and a half later than I said I'd be there. This poor fellow waited up for me and even called when I was on my way to make sure I was OK. Other than the great service I have been back there with no disappointment. It is an old building, I believe from the 1930's so it is a little outdated but of course renovated. The rooms are cozy, not luxury. There are lawn chairs to sit outside and enjoy the fresh ocean air with seashells everywhere. The bathroom was a little tiny for my 6'6" boyfriend but no complaints. This is definitely a romantic, 1-2 night getaway... or even with the family. read more

Stayed two nights. Over the phone reservation service was great, I enquired about a fireplace (I knew they probably didn't have heat or A/C since it's the beach) and he said the rooms were too small to have a fireplace, so I brought extra blankets. Didn't need them, they had a space heater that heated the room nicely! Check-in was okay, had to stand at the front door in the cold while he ran credit card, etc. No lobby or "office" that I noticed, just a desk right by the door so you couldn't walk in. The gentleman was nice and pleasant. Quaint place, old and small, but it's the beach and we weren't in the room much. Bathroom extremely small; knees were literally under the pedestal sink when sitting on the toilet and shower had barely enough room for tall people like my husband and I. Bed was comfy and TV was an upgraded flat panel. Plenty of light from good sized windows. Picked up room before we left for the day and when we returned at almost 11pm no one had come in to make the bed or replenish the towels. Rang the bell at the office at 7:50 a.m. to get new towels, but no answer. Fortunately we have relatives that live in town so we borrowed towels. We weren't informed that we wouldn't be getting new towels daily when we checked in...no receipt with any "rules"...just a sign on the wall in the "office" that read to check-out by 11am, turn off heater and leave key in the door. Would only stay here again if other options didn't work out. Definitely ask for extra towels upon check-in! read more

Okay, so it's not a 4-star hotel, but it's pretty good given the price. I almost never write reviews, but I felt compelled after staying here. The rooms are spartan but VERY CLEAN (I'm really picky), and the BEDS ARE AWESOME! You can hear the ocean if you open the windows, which is a really nice way to drift off to sleep. So, if you want a well-located (close to the beach), clean, comfy place, it's not a bad place to stay. (FYI we stayed in room 6 - small but low price. Just what we were looking for). Some of the rooms have kitchens, etc. As for the manager, which seems to be the target of many complaints, he was fine and seemingly normal. He showed us a few rooms and let us choose which one we wanted. I would recommend it as long as you go in with the right expectations (spartan but clean and cozy). read more

Quaint and cozy. It's no 5 star palace, but you shouldn't be looking for that if you're going to Stinson Beach. Took my gf there in April and she loved it. Staff is pleasant, even called to make sure I was coming when I was running late. No chamber maid service, but I don't consider that an issue. Takes a while to get hot water in the shower and a bit over priced for what it is. Quick walk to the cafes, restaurants and corner store (to buy wine of course), and right around the corner from a trailhead for a really sweet hike that overlooks the town and the Pacific. read more

Cons: - paper thin walls (neighbor up at 7AM on a Sunday with light conversation -- you're up at 7AM) - was told my credit card didn't go through, twice, so I paid cash... subsequently found two charges on my card for $165; when I called to ask them to reverse the charges, he said "Well, I don't know what happened..." and that was *it*. The guy acknowledged I paid cash, but offered no resolution. Now going through dispute process with credit card issuer. This is my first Yelp review -- I have received bad service elsewhere, and I am not the type who goes into fits over small slights -- the fact is, the guy who mans the front desk is extremely rude and apathetic. If you can, stay somewhere else, and if you do stay here, pay via credit card (vs. debit), so that you can dispute it more easily, or pay by cash and get a receipt/proof of payment. I'm a college student who stayed at a $36 hostel last night, hiked something like 17 miles to get here, so you imagine I would not be very picky... That being said, I can't say I recommend this place as anything but a last resort. No pun intended. Man at the desk was quite unfriendly and gave me all sorts of weird vibes in our 5 minutes of interaction. Room is very tiny even by college dorm standards. Weird brown stains on the sheets and towels. No soap or shampoo (especially disappointing!) I probably wouldn't mind any of that if it weren't for the fact that the place is so overpriced!! Wow. First off, I should say that I haven't stayed here, but I was going to. My telephone interaction with the manager was what made me change my mind. I had looked around on the internet for a cheap place to stay in Stinson Beach. There are a few, but this one seemed to be cheapest. The pictures of the cottages on the motel's website are cute, there's a garden; in other words, it looked exactly like the no-frills kind of joint I was looking for. Before calling, I checked to see if there were any reviews posted anywhere. I found two, one on TripAdvisor and one on Yahoo Travel. Both were extremely negative. One was complaining about lack of amenities and the manager's bad attitude, and one was complaining about an infestation of spiders. Despite all that, I thought I'd give it a shot anyway, because the price was right and I'm not too fussy. So I called the motel. The manager answered, and we started the reservation process. But I wanted to mention the negative reviews to him-- both were from 1-2 years ago-- to give him a chance to address the complaints, to tell me things had been rectified, to reassure me, or whatever. At that point, I didn't really care that much-- I was still going to book the place. I want to stress here that I was really mellow about bringing it up, and that I was in no way attacking him or raising my voice or being a jerk or ANYTHING. Just, "Hey, man, thought you should know there are a couple of negative reviews floating around out there-- did you know that? What do you think about that?" That sort of thing. First he completely denied that the reviews were about the Stinson Beach Motel. He was like, "Oh, those couldn't have been about us. Maybe it was about next door." Finally, when I had convinced him that the reviews were indeed about his motel, he started getting really agitated and raising his voice, telling me it was uncool of me to bring that up, and what did I want him to do about it, and why are you asking me this? And I was like, "Well, it says here on your website that if we have any questions to feel free to ask the manager, Frodo. So I'm asking." (I'm not even kidding, apparently that's his name.) So he was just getting really defensive and increasingly hostile, and actually wanting me to justify why I had looked up reviews of his motel! I was like, "Buddy, look, don't kill the messenger; when you're about to spend some money on a non-refundable product that you know nothing about, you look around for a little information, right? I'm just bringing it to your attention." He then proceeded to say something like, "Well, maybe you need to-- you know, sometimes it's in the *way* you say something..." And I just had to stop him there-- I was like, "Okay, dude, I don't need to be lectured on my communication style by you, okay?" It just went on and on. I was pretty much in disbelief the whole time. So, if you're still reading, unless you want to engage in the not-so-gentle art of verbal combat with a motel manager named Frodo on your lovely getaway-from-the-ratrace weekend, you might want to give this place a miss. I'm heading down to San Benito House in Half Moon Bay, instead, where they feed you breakfast and they don't yell at you on the reservation line. I'll let you know how it turns out. read more

I called twice and received an answering machine. Then I decided to just inquire about a room in person and discovered the most unhappy motel attendant not to mention rude. I asked for their rates and he hands me a business card, directing me to his website. He then proceeds to close the door! I then politely convinced him to help me since that is why I was there to begin with. He had a snobby, reluctant attitude and I did not feel comfortable giving someone like this my personal information and staying at a potential "Bates" motel. Feeling a bit of sympathy for his unhappiness , I thank him for his time and wish him a good day and he replies: 'I don't think so because I have to work today...YOU have a good day!' he then closed the door. As a business owner, I choose to believe this behavior is unacceptable. I am giving a generous two stars on account that I didn't actually get a chance to stay here and the business owner should be given an opportunity to address for an updated review. I had a very similar experience to one of the other reviewers, I've never stayed here because when I went to take a look at the place I found the manager to be totally insane. I'm planning my wedding and we're having our reception across the street from the hotel so I thought this place would be perfect. When Frodo (yes, Frodo) answered my knock on the door he was all sweaty and seemed agitated, he explained that he was working out and "That's the trouble when you live where you work..." I explained that I was having my wedding up there and he said, "Why would anyone want to get married here, we're a small town and we can't handle that much traffic especially in the summer" He went on to tell me that he doesn't like renting rooms to wedding people because they aren't from the Bay Area and he prefers repeat customers. I explained that I live here and have friends who might not want to make the drive back to San Francisco after the wedding. He slightly changed his attitude and said, oh ok, that's different. But he still seemed annoyed about wedding guests staying there. Long story short this guy struck me as totally insane, he was jogging in place the entire time we talked and kept saying he needed to get back to his "workout" yet he kept talking and talking. He completely discouraged me from patronizing his business and also went on and on about how he has to charge a lot for his rooms even though they're really small, because of the location. And he's right, the rooms are tiny and not at all impressive. I'm going to discourage my wedding guests from staying here. Very bizarre guy that Frodo. read more

I read all the other negative reviews mentioning lost reservations, but this was the only place with a room on a holiday weekend, so I went for it. I decided to play it safe since so many others had problems, so I even called to confirm 2 days before my arrival (on Thursday for a Saturday-Monday stay). Confirmation call was quick and easy, sure thing, they had me down for Room #4, offered details about check-in time, etc. Alas, when we arrived at 4pm on Saturday they said Room #4 was already taken and they had nothing under my name. The guy was incredibly rude - I wonder if he might have some mental health issues? He at first told me they had another room (but only for one night) that cost more, then told me he actually didn't have a room and pretty much slammed the door in my face. If you are staying spur of the moment and just walk in and they have a room available, maybe it's fine. But don't count on this as a place to stay - the reservations apparently mean nothing (I'll be checking my credit card statement to be sure the card I gave them to hold it wasn't charged!). read more

I called to cancel a reservation, and discovered that the reservation had been placed on the wrong day. Next, when I told the gentleman that I wished to cancel (more than a month in advance) he hung up on me. When I called back to confirm my cancellation, he wouldn't answer, so I left a message. Ok, I am from Texas. Traveling to Crescent City on a homeschooling trip with my son. I chose this motel based upon the yelp reviews; however, I decided a lot of these reviews are NOT representative of what this truly is...be honest and at least those who choose to stay will have no unreasonable expectations. This place is a dive. We were in Room 5, and it is tiny. The bed linen had a ton of spots in them, stains actually. The shower is tiny. The front door isn't sealed. There is a .5 inch gap around the door, including the bottom. The windows do not lock. There were dead huge horseflies in the window, and there were insects in the room. There is no A/C, and I know it is cool in Stinson Beach. However there is a gross odor in the room, and an a/c would have helped that. There are holes in the window screens. Those blue lounge chairs outside (and in the web pictures) are black, nasty, moldy disgusting. There are only four parking spots. The wifi never connected. I wanted very much to acclimate to this motel, to show my son that sometimes things are beyond your comfort zone. However as I sat on the edge of that bed, I started to itch all over, and I quickly made reservations in Napa and left. This is a low quality motel in a prime location. The woman was very nice, and even charged me for only one night after I told her I didn't think I would stay for two nights as initially planned. I just think the owners should advertise this as a dive on the side of the road that is great for a shower and a place to sleep, provided you don't have serious bed bug paranoia like me! Alternatively, they should invest in a redo and up their prices as a result. I would never stay here, but my husband and kids would just to have awesome stories to share about the room. read more

We wore our socks at all times in the room (which turned brown by the end of the night), we didn't shower because the shower was too gross, the windows didn't lock, the outlets were so loose that we had to prop shoes against our chargers so that they wouldn't fall out of the outlets, it took two of us to lock/unlock the door from outside because one person had to push as hard as possible against the door while the other person tried to turn the key, the walls are paper thin. I am only giving this motel one star for the location, if it wasn't for the walking distance to beach and restaurants, it would be a zero rating. I arrived with my family to be greeted by a grouchy front desk representative/live-in manager who was unprofessional and rude. The entire property smelled like propane, almost as though it would blow up at any moment. We were told that was just how it was. The cottages were filthy, so much I wouldn't let my young child touch the ground and the bathrooms were gross. The second night we were there, there was no hot water, as well as the following morning. I went and ask the front desk and was told, "yeah, we are out of propane." UNBELIEVEABLE! I worked on contacting the owner for 3 weeks to request compensation and she initially said $40 discount, but I talked her up to $80, considering we had two rooms for two nights and paid $800. read more

When your guests wake up early and skip the plans they had for the day to rush home to throw all their clothes in the wash and scrub themselves raw in the shower, then you have a problem. They apparently don't even clean between guests, they just put new toilet paper on the roll and pull up the cover on the bed. The floor was absolutely filthy - if you walked on it then you'd end up with debris on your feet and it felt filmy like it had never been mopped. But the thing that drove us out was that when we pulled back the comforter there was hair all over the sheets. They had obviously not been washed. We had to put down towels to sleep on because it was so disgusting. I can deal with the tiny rooms and limited parking, I can deal with the fact that they only set out one bar of soap that you have to transfer between both the sink and the shower, I can deal with no hand towels provided (only bath towels and washcloths)... but even the most budget motel is expected to maintain some level of cleanliness. What I can't deal with is the fact that we legitimately might have brought home bedbugs from staying at this disgusting place. read more

We stayed here after a long day of fabulous hiking, and the experience was just fine, particularly since we were only in the motel to sleep and shower. DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE. I can't believe this place. I attended a wedding here in Stinson Beach last weekend and was planning to stay the night with my family after the wedding at this motel. I've already made a reservation here weeks before and the gentleman I spoke to over the phone took down my information and credit card info. Since the reservation was done over the phone I was a bit concerned so I ask him will I get a confirmation he said no, and said that he got all my info and had me reserved for Saturday. He just told me to show up that day. So I thought everything was all set for Saturday , but NO. On that Saturday, I decided to call the motel to notify them that I will be checking in late. And the gentleman on the phone who I think is the same guy that took my reservation weeks before, he said he doesn't have a reservation for me. I couldn't believe it but had a weird feeling this might happen because I didn't get a formal confirmation. Anyways, the guy was not very helpful and basically said there's nothing he can do about it. After calling other motel and hotels near by for vacancy, I find out that others had the same problem with this motel. This motel apparently is notorious for this. Stinson Beach motel ruined our night and trip to Stinson beach. We couldn't find a room so we had to drive 2 hours home late at night after the wedding. read more

I booked 3 nights at this motel months ahead of time. My husband and I just needed a budget place to rest our bodies in between hiking and running on Mt. Tam. We were not expecting the Hilton but we WERE expecting something safe. This motel is EXTREMELY unsafe. 1. There were no batteries in the smoke alarm. 2. There was no knob on the bathroom door, but there was a note taped to it that said not to close it or it will be locked. 3. The bathroom window was wide open (no screen) so there were mosquitoes in our room. Now, let's talk about the proprietor. When I went to open the office door and check in, he only opened the door halfway. He gave me a really funny feeling, so much so that I told my husband to stop unloading the car and come with me as the proprietor showed me the room. He gave me the creepiest feeling ever. We were in the room just 20 min when due to the items listed above, we decided we couldn't stay there. We only got $90 back but at least we are alive. We took pictures of the smoke alarm, bathroom door, and open window so we can report the establishment to the dept. of health. No one should be staying at this hotel. read more

We stayed here one night out-of-season in early November, 2009. This is a small town on the edge of a steep hill, with the ocean on the other side. I don't know what a summer vacation is like here. But I can say that our family of three had a basic, very clean, lodging for the night. We rented a place with a small kitchen, a living area with a single futon with trundle, and a bedroom and very small bathroom (small shower stall). The best things that I can say are that it was clean., and that there were some thoughtful touches. It didn't have any comfortable chairs, (only folding card table chairs), and only overhead lights except for the bedroom, which only had one bedside light (can you tell I like lamps). But it is within a short block of the public beach, several restaurants, and the town market. Since it was clean and mold-free, I give it a big thumbs up. read more

This was the most hellish night we have ever spent anywhere. When we arrived for our three-night stay, the proprietor met us--he was wearing no shoes and only dirty socks with holes in the toes. He showed us the room. "I'm sorry, it's all we have," The room was impossibly small, no lamps, no dresser, no closet, no phone, no soap, and a simple rod hanging from the wall for clothing. There was only one light fixture--only a single 40-watt bulb protruding from the wall with no shade. There was no bedside table. When I sat on the toilet, I had to bend my neck so as not to smash my head on the sink which was about six inches away. The shower head was dripping and moldy. There was a pungent smell...I said, "It smells like...ass and" and my wife and I then completed the sentence in unison: "...and more ass." It smelled like rotting flesh, shit, and propane. After dinner, we stole flowers off the trellis and arranged them on our pillows to try to mask the smell. My wife slept in all her clothes so as not to touch the sheets, which were corse and rough and threadbare. As she fell asleep, I slid into the covers.. the bottom of the bed was filled with sand. I did not tell my wife, because I did not want to trigger an anxiety episode. I did not sleep. The next morning I got on my computer, canceled our reservations, bought new plane tickets, which cost an additional $800, to leave as soon as possible. It was a price worth paying to get the hell out of there and to a safe and secure location. Far worse than the Bates Motel--a dead rotting woman would have at least been interesting--and we'd have known the source of the stench. read more
