I had a very positive first visit to this shop recently. The shop is set up more as a supply store and we were told that there aren't many animals kept on site. I went in to see what kind of tarantulas they had available. I was told that all the animals they have are listed on the website as most of them are not on site. The owner was very kind to us, helping us to look at the options online. She also brought out a few of the juvenile tarantulas she had in store for us to look at. She also showed us some death beetles and Cuban fake chameleons. There were some bearded dragons on display as well. You can tell that the owner cares very deeply for the animals that she plays guardian to. I ended up coming back later that same day to get the Grammostola Rosea tarantula because I could not stop thinking about her :) I'm already in love with this little one! This is a great shop for serious reptile & arachnid keepers. it is small but well stocked with feeders & husbandry supplies. If you are looking to browse for entertainment it's not set up for this. I would recommend looking at the website and calling ahead to request to see any animals you are interested in buying. The way they are kept is for the benefit of the animals care and to reduce stress. It may seem unconventional to some but I appreciate the way this place is set up with the best of intentions. Are the animals healthy and housed in clean cages? Yeah, for the most part. That's about the only positive thing I can say for this place. The products are all wayyyy over priced. I got a box of springtails for my bioactive viv and noticed they'd taped over the price sticker from Josh's Frogs and it was several dollars less than what Stingers was reselling them for. Feeders like Dubias etc are also super $$$ which I don't get. You can purchase equally good quality feeders from the reptile expo or eBay at 1/2 the cost! People seem to have a problem with the owners. Yeah they can be pushy but I personally never had an issue with them, but I also never really linger in the store, just buy my stuff and get out. I will say the few times we've spoken they seemed passionate about what they do, but I didn't always agree on their opinions about animal husbandry. Anyway, is this place better than Petco? Yeah totally. But for keepers like myself who are trying to keep costs low, this place typically isn't an option unless I'm in a pinch! read more

I got my bearded dragon from here over a year ago, and he's great. However recently I have been buying my roach feeders here and I am disappointed EVERY time by the pushy employees. It's a 30 minute drive I make a couple times a month and I enjoy stretching my legs and looking at the animals after that long drive. However every single time i'm going around the store, having fun looking at animals the employees get pushy within a few minutes and ask if i'm buying anything. (I come well before closing time.) I reply yes i am getting feeders but i would like to look around first but before i can even get the words out they want me to come to the register and buy the roaches. After i buy them they say something that implies that i need to leave and i'm back in my car unsatisfied because i didn't get to see all the animals. They may just be "old fashioned" in their style of business, but shouldn't they want me to walk around the store and find more things i want to buy? Not to mention i ALWAYS receive at least 3 out of 24 roaches dead upon getting home after the store. I want to support a local pet store but the poor customer service here is changing my mind and I think i will just start buying online for cheaper. Sadly, you ladies need a class in good customer service before I will continue paying $25 a week to be rushed thru a store and then get dead feeders. read more

After reading reviews I was a little worried about going in, but also convinced these ladies know what they're doing and that this is the best place to buy a bearded dragon. I WAS pleasantly greeted and informed about bearded dragons. I did not feel pressured to buy anything. The dragon was pricey but also raised with love and so healthy and beautiful. You get what you pay for. I was expecting a totally different experience after reading these reviews. Go in for yourself and make up your own mind. I didn't bring my kids, but it's just not the pet store for kids. There is no space. I recently discovered this place while on my quest to learn about and purchase a tortoise for our family. I had been to some pet stores that carry tortoises but I felt a little uneasy about them, like when you buy a dog from a mall pet store vs a breeder. When I found Stingers I felt like I found the right place. I took my kids with me into the store (1/2 hour drive) to see the tortoises and get an education. I was immediately dismayed that they had the wall of animal enclosures completely barricaded from foot traffic. The only place you could go was a small area by the store-front window. I was greeted after a few minutes by a mother and daughter team that runs the store. The daughter spent about 20 minutes or so answering basic care questions about tortoises which I found helpful. This is exactly what I had expected from a small, family-run, specialty store. During that visit, they suggested a specific species of tortoise and reminded me that they have only 2 left. They also showed me their tortoise kit which comes with everything needed to get started. This sticker-shocked me a little though. The animal was priced higher than all of the big-box stores, but I justified that with the care and quality of the animals at that store. But the price for the kit was far higher than I had expected, and I have had aquariums before. When I asked if we could see the tortoises, they responded that when I bought the animal, they would bring it out and we could see it then. After talking it over with my wife, I called them Monday afternoon to ask if they would be able to hold the animal for me for a pickup next week if I paid now. They remembered me from my visit and informed me that I could purchase online and they would be happy to hold until next Thursday or Friday. They even went so far to point out their reduced hours those days so I wouldn't make the drive in vain. That evening I purchased the tortoise online and called to let them know I had, and that as a reminder, I would pickup next week as discussed. When the mother remarked that they would pull everything and have it all ready for pickup, I replied that I hadn't purchased the full kit just yet. I was on the fence on their kit because I had seen similar kits elsewhere for far cheaper. The mother said ok and ended the call. THIS IS WHERE THE TURN HAPPENS... I got a call back within about 5 minutes from the mother. She had the daughter nearby talking her through the call. She informed me that because I didn't purchase their $615 kit with the enclosure and the tortoise, that they would not allow me to pickup next week. I had to pickup today or Tuesday. I told them that I would let them know then as this was going to be a surprise for Christmas as a family gift. Tuesday I left work early and headed back to Stingers for my PAID-FOR tortoise. When I arrived, the mother greeted me and told me they had refunded my money and that I would not be receiving my animal. I asked why they would do that, when the last communication was that I had yesterday and today to pickup. I could see if it was the NEXT day and they hadn't heard from me. The mother told me she didn't know and I'd have to speak to the daughter. So the daughter comes up, and brought her body language with her. She starts right off with saying she emailed me last night and initiated the refund of my purchase through PayPal. I checked my PayPal, no refund. I asked her again, why? She continued the same narrative that they hadn't heard from me. I replied over and over that I was not compelled to inform them of my arrival time within normal business hours as long as I picked up within the timeframe they told me. Finally she breaks the narrative and tells me that I need to understand that they take a loss on selling the animals and they make their money and keep doors open by selling the kits with the equipment. Because I didn't buy the full kit, I was evidently not entitled to purchase the animal on it's own? That's like going to a theater and being refused entry into the movie you paid for because you didn't purchase any concessions as well! When it seemed like the back and forth dialogue had run it's course, the daughter said that she'd have to cancel the refund. I said yes. She left. I proceeded to get a few accessories and food supplement powder from the mother. When the daughter returned with the receipt, I attempted to ask a question and she blew me off with "I have to get back to work, you can ask her (the mother) and she will help you". As if I am no longer worthy or deserving of her time as a business operator. I took my tortoise and supplies and left for the last time. I am in shock that I left without being given any specific care instructions or information about the animal, just a "see ya". Good thing I can Google it. Needless to say, I'll NEVER go back. Accused my parents and me of lying, changing their story multiple times. They interrupted and talked over us both on the phone and in person. The terrariums in the store itself were practically bare aside from the actual animals. Clearly bad conditions, and I find myself constantly wishing I'd seen it sooner. My baby corn snake wouldn't eat (they claimed he was healthy and "well started".) They repeatedly told us to "just wait until next week; he'll eat when he's hungry." The vet said he was dangerously underweight and prescribed nutritional supplements, but by then it was too late. He starved to death. I really have had mixed feelings about this store, but my last experience was the last straw, and helped me come to the conclusion that this place really isn't all that great. That being said, I'd like to just list the few great things about this place (but trust me, there's only a few). One thing that had my family and I coming back and becoming regular customers was the diversity and unique selection of reptiles. We have purchased quite a few pets there, including snakes and turtles, along with all the necessities needed to obtain these animals (tanks, food, etc.). But looking back at it, that seems to be the only reason why we'd came back time after time. (Now, this review is coming from a teenager, who has been a customer of stingers for at least 5 years. So when my father and I started going there, I was probably around the age of 9-11.) The shop is run by (and correct me if I'm wrong) a mother and daughter. When you first walk in, you'd be lucky to be greeted kindly, if at all. When you first meet either of the ladies, it's amazing how high and mighty they think they are. Both women will talk to you with such disrespect. My family and I have been going there for again, around 5 years, and they still don't treat you any different than someone who has walked in for the first time, like we're total strangers. And God forbid you say something wrong or even ask a question, they'll correct you and make sure you know how wrong you are with again, the upmost disrespect. And maybe you're thinking, "what does this kid know about disrespect?" But I'm old enough to legally drive and can write this review, long and grammatically correct, I know how customers should be treated. Secondly, the prices. I am lucky enough to not have to purchase items personally, but I have heard first hand from my father how they are pretty overpriced. Lastly, how they act around children. I really don't recommend bringing children in there at all. Like I've said, I've been going there since I was around 9, and I can tell you first hand that they look at children like they're aliens. There's a sign on the door stating children must be quiet and with an adult, which is fair knowing there are a lot of animals that could get spooked. But even if the child is quiet and looking at the animals like I have before, the women would give the children looks and stare at them, and look at the parents like they just committed a crime or like they brought their pet dog in, when in reality they've just brought their kid in to look at the reptiles. Overall I give this place 2 stars out of 5. I would give it a 1 star, but I would be lying if I said the pets haven't given my brother and I really great memories, and I probably wouldn't have those without making those purchases. But my family and I will not be returning to stingers any longer. read more

A few days ago was my first and last experience with Stingers. I was having an outing with my family, my 3 year old daughter and 2 year old son were very excited to check out the reptile store mommy found online. You see, I have been in the reptile trade for 8 years. In that time I've had more species in my care than most. Ranging from garter snakes to 15+ foot green anacondas, chameleons, geckos, bearded dragons, skinks, tree boas, etc. I am well versed in husbandry and general care of reptiles in general, and as such my children are learning as well. We approached the store and before we could even enter the store we were abruptly stopped and told "We don't allow strollers in the store " Now I understand that this may be your policy, but a sign on the door (along with all the other ones listing the "rules" of your establishment, including the one saying to keep kids quiet) would have been helpful. Instead I was greeted harshly by a woman who clearly saw my family as a burden, or at least that was my impression. My husband took my now screaming 2 year old to the car in his stroller and told me to go ahead with my daughter. (I was carrying her). I proceeded to enter the store and browse. I was impressed by what I saw, as there aren't many stores like this one. Most pet stores have incorrect husbandry, or pair the wrong critters in the same enclosure. Not here. Things look beautiful, the animals looked healthy from what I could see, and the selection of animals was pretty decent, especially for a smaller store. My daughter was excited to see new things and exclaimed with excitement. She understands that a lot of reptiles stress with loud sounds that are outside their norm (like an excited toddler) and typically she does great. Shes 3, so honestly she did great just for the sole fact she wasn't squirming from my arms. Its unfortunate however that my ENTIRE visit in the store I was met with sideways glares and dirty looks. Met with a nasty "Is there anything I can help you with? " that I can only imagine must have caused physical pain to say, just by the face that accompanied it. I have never felt so unwelcome in a store before. We went in with the intention to spend a decent amount of money that day. Instead I left empty handed and disappointed. I had to console my son who didn't understand why he didn't go in the store. I had to try to explain to my daughter why we didn't get what we went there to get. And I had to struggle with whether I should write a review or not. And I decided to do it. Maybe be nicer to people. Don't judge a book by its cover. And other potential customers, I'm not saying don't go there. I'm saying maybe get a sitter, clearly children are just UNWELCOME here. I won't be returning. If we do not take the opportunity to teach our children and get them excited about animals when they are young, we're missing our opportunity entirely. If you are into Reptiles, Spiders, and anything creepy crawly than this be the place for you! It certainly is like walking into a reptile zoo when you go in there. The store itself is run by a sweet old couple who know quite a bit about their reptiles. They do carry a small, but VERY hard to find selection of live foods. Probably a great little place if you're into Reptiles or Spiders. I'm more of a fish guy myself so I walked around, said hi, and left. The store is very well maintained both inside the cages and the store in general. The one thing that turned me off is as I went to leave, finding nothing I could use, there was a few "Donation" buckets. A note attached read of how it costs them lots of money to run the store, blah, blah. I couldn't help but to think that maybe they should increase the diversity of their "Weird Animal World" to just more than tarantulas and turtles. I did notice quite a few empty tanks that could easily house a small variety of other aquatic life? Just my pet peeve when a store invites you in with flashy signs, than turns around and asks you to donate just for having the privilege of walking in. read more

They would not exchange it, they would not help us at all. We took it to a vet and were told it was barely 2 months old. They ladies the mom and daughter were unfriendly, unhelpful and rude to us. My mom surprised me with a ball python for my birthday, he's beautiful and I love him to death, but the "starter kit" THEY RECOMMENDED her to came with next to nothing needed to healthily house this species! A 20 gallon tank, bedding that doesn't hold the humidity he needs, a water bowl too small for him to soak in, one decent hide, a small heating pad, a stick on thermometer, and a screen top that doesn't keep ANY humidity in. Not even a hygrometer! If these people cared about the well being of the animals they were selling, they would know what products need to go with them. She later told me she paid $80 for the snake, a 3 month old normal ball python, the same snake can be found at PetSmart for half of their price. read more

I unknowingly bought a very sick tortoise! We bought a sulcata. The pet store owners believed (or acted like) they knew how to take care of him. 100% of what they were doing was detrimental to the tortoises health. Everything from the heating pad, substrate, and diet were all wrong. Not to mention their lack of humidity and daily soaking. My tortoise was severely dehydrated and his urates were like stone which could cause kidney stones. After a vet check, he also had worms and mycoplasma which the only way of catching the bacteria is by contact from and infected tortoise. If I had not have taken my tortoise to the vet, ultimately he would have died. The owner gave me a dry food to feed to my tortoise. When I asked what it is, they said they don't know, they get it from the breeder, and the breeder won't tell them what it is just so they HAVE to buy it from her. Pet owners should always know what they are feeding their pet in order to keep them healthy....not to mention the store that previously cared for your pet. read more

My little cousin is 7 years old. He is severely disabled and is in a wheelchair. His older sister brought him to this store to check out the animals. The employees rudely told them to leave because they don't allow strollers. He isn't in a stroller. Later on Facebook they alleged that people with strollers had stole from them and that is the reason for the policy. I'm not entirely sure what there is worth stealing from a lizard shop, but I imagine people with strollers have far better things to do than steal some crickets. Denying a person in a wheelchair access to a shop is a violation of the ADA. read more

I've been shopping here for years starting from when they were at their old location as I prefer to support small, local businesses. The owner has never been the friendliest, but Ive always just got what I needed and left. However, I do have to say after my recent visit I'll be getting my supplies elsewhere from now on. I was treated rudely during my visit and later on when I had a issue with a purchase and called, I was basically accused of doing something wrong and was hurried off the phone. I'm very disappointed. As a loyal customer I expected more. Even just a sincere apology wound have went a long way. I understand that dealing with the public can be stressful, but there is no reason to be short and snippy with a friendly customer who is willing to spend a lot of money in your shop. As much as it pains me to say it, I'm going to need to start getting g my supplies from PetCo from now on. At least their workers are friendly and kind. read more

Stocked with tons of supplies, friendly, knowledgeable ladies and you see a pride in ownership. Prices are reasonable and they have hard to find items. The place is small but big on selection. Most of these reviews say that these ladies are rude and unpleasant. Now, they could be right, as i've only had one day's experience with them. But, as far as that day went, they weren't unpleasant to me whatsoever. As of 2022, maybe they've changed how they act towards customers? The mother is simply old; and i understand that older people can come across as impolite, but i try to give grace most of the time. Although she did ask about every five minutes or so of me being in the store if i needed help with anything, she never urged me to leave or grew impatient. I was in there for 15-20 mins and even had some friendly small talk about our mutual reptile hobbies. As for the daughter, (whom i didn't get to talk to) she didn't seem unpleasant either. I overheard a conversation she had with a customer and it was a very light hearted and pleasant conversation. I will admit that it's kinda a bummer that they don't allow people coming into the back of the store to browse (due to covid). But they'll probably lift that rule in the future anyway. Yes, some of their stuff is overpriced, but you can also get other things for a great deal! Some of the tanks have great prices and i intend to go back in the future to snag one. Overall, this place isn't bad at all. I'm sure they've been poorly treated by customers in the past, and that might be what has caused them to be a little rude at times. Terible hours and most of the time the older owner has a terrible attitude, on top of that most things they arent very educated on, for example they say you have to have a heating rock for your bearded dragons which is wrong because they can easily over heat and burn your bearded dragon or even kill them, for anyone else thats wondering if this place is good or not, its not a very good reptile shop, id rather drive out of my way to not go here, oh yeah and almost everything they have is wayyyyy overpriced, for example their dubia roaches, you buy 24 for around 15$, i can goto a reptile show and get 100 for 20$. The place has a great selection, but the staff (the younger women) is not very helpful when it comes to picking out animals. They do not allow handling at all. If you are going to handle your pet ever, i think you should handle it before buying. The women refused to even touch the animals. It really saddens me that instead of a simple apology she instead chose to basically call me a delusional, immature, liar. I in no way fabricated the events of yesterday. I can excuse the behavior of her mother because although she did not answer some of my questions she at least acknowledged us. For anyone who ever says that here ladies are mean are so wrong. They have been so patient and caring whenever I came in and needed help. They helped me create a new set up when I was fed up with my crappy tall tank for my dragon. They gave me advice on how to get my baby to eat greens when she was being extremely stubborn. They helped coach me when I called during a power outage on how to keep jack warm and comfortable in the beginning of this month. And lastly they answered my phone call on Christmas Eve. This phone call was a frantic one because no vets would pick up and those who did couldn't help her. my baby was actively vomiting blood and showed every sign of a beardie that was dying. I sobbed into the phone apologizing because I knew they weren't vets but I needed some sort of help and they were so kind. So absolutely kind and not even an ounce of annoyance was detected that I called on Christmas Eve. (And I promise you I'm extremely sensitive to how people treat me and would cry if I'm looked at the wrong way) they calmly apologized and told me that they couldn't help but they could offer phone numbers for an emergency vet that they would take theirs too and wished me luck. I ended up losing my Jackie poo to liver failure. The vet told me there was nothing I could have done to prevent this and that it was a genetic issue that pops up when bearded dragons are between ages 2-3 or when they are older. I cannot be more thankful for these ladies at Stingers. Without them I would have had to watch my baby girl vomit blood until she died. Even though my heart is extremely heavy that she is gone, I'm so thankful I was able to get her to a vet where they were able to give her medicine to make her not be in pain. Thank you so much Stingers, I will forever be indebted to you. You saved my baby from a more horrific passing than what it already was. read more

I love stopping in for supplies. I buy live food for my reptiles, and the quality of their feeder rats and crickets is excellent. The ladies are knowledgeable and I find that they are passionate about pets. They also provide boarding for reptiles, I will be boarding my bearded dragon there this summer. Lots of food options and health remedies for reptiles, nice Facebook page and website. read more

Obviously most of the good reviews of this store especially the mother daughter team are friends or family. Don't believe me go ahead give it a try for yourself. Hop on in and be sure to ask the same question to both of them individually and get two completely different answers. Be sure to never reveal that you have ever had a pet in the past that you no longer have they will look down on you and instantly give you attitude as to why you would want to even be there getting or even interested in getting a new reptile since you couldn't handle the last one. Very rude people. It's too bad because the store does have a good selection but when it comes down to it they are losing customers left and right all because of the personality they do not have. It's too bad because when the store was in the Plymouth Road location there was a male working there who was very nice treated you with respect and that is the reason we started going. No reason to go anymore. Oh and if you have kids, keep them far,far away from the mother and daughter, they are very rude to kids almost like they hate kids and that's very odd for kids to not be completely welcomed at a reptile store!! read more

They are a small place decent to get things! They have a crazy variety of food for lizards.

I recently made a purchase from this store and the 2 ladies that run the store are TRUE GOOD HEARTED AMERICANS, Who have top notch clean reptiles and more. No signs of neglect to any animals or store. These 2 ladies are very friendly informative helpful and caring. And I would truly tell anyone to stop in and check their store anytime you can. I would also like to add I purchased a very hard to find Terrarium 18 x 18 x 36 for my Clown Tree Frogs None of the big name pet stores had this Terrarium I searched online and still couldn't get. That says a lot for a private owned pet store. Anyone who speaks negative about this store go fly a kite. And one other thing The dog in the store is in the back and will not harm you the dog is behind a gate and their is nothing wrong with a dog in a pet store. read more

I cannot express my gratitude for this store and the women that run it enough. Almost a year ago I was interested in adopting my first pet reptile, after reading horror stories about the big box pet stores online I decided to find a locally owned and operated business. Although I had made the mistake of already purchasing many of my vivarium components from another store (I would have much rather given them my business), they were able to walk me through the process of setting it up, even drew a picture for me. Having never even handled a reptile before, they graciously allowed me to hold one of their resident beardies, Betty. Picking out my own dragon was a quick process, and they did allow me to hold her (I'm assuming because they *knew* I was going to take her home, I understand it's a pet store not a petting zoo). Since then they have been my go to for live feeder insects, new equipment, and the occasional treat for our beardie. On multiple occasions I have called them in a panic, while experiencing something new - first shed, egg laying, etc. and they have kindly calmed me down. We currently board our bearded dragon there when we go on vacation and I can travel restfully knowing that our scale covered family member is in good hands. What a blessing. They even referred me to a veterinarian that is trusted in the herpetology world. Would not recommend any other reptile store to anyone in the metro Detroit area. read more

I would have loved to speak with them about gerbils, but the woman working there lost our business when she rudely and loudly reprimanded me and my children in her store, about 15 minutes ago. My husband and I love to support local businesses, and thought it would be wonderful to show my children a local reptile store. Perhaps consider getting them their first small mammal pet. My children (ages 3 and 4) were very excitable upon entry. They were talking and pointing at the snakes and bearded dragons. We were told almost immediately to mind the quiet zone signs. I gave my children this reminder. We progressed through the store, and my children were just asking questions and being excited about what they were looking at. As we came around to the front of the register, my son did drop a turtle figurine they had as decor. I did firmly tell him no, and at the moment, the older woman employee asked her younger employee, "will you see what's going on down there? That woman cannot control her children." I said, "excuse me, we are trying to support your store; this is our first time in here." She looked point blank at me and said, "well, BE QUIET." I told my children we were leaving while they pleaded to stay. We will NOT be back, and I'll be leaving reviews wherever I can. Additionally, I'll be spreading word of mouth about the HORRIBLE customer service we had. Just went to further check reviews for their store on yelp and see that this is the norm for them: making customers, especially ones with young children, feel unwelcome and go so far as to embarrass them. I see they've even made it not an option to leave a review on Facebook. Not hard to see why. And as for the person that posted right before me, that she shouldn't have to ANSWER QUESTIONS, that people should just google at home, really?! She owns an exotic animal shop: people needing to know the answers to questions is WHY SHE IS IN BUSINESS IN THE FIRST PLACE. Ridiculous to say that customers are in the wrong for asking questions. read more

Great variety of supplies and pets, amazing customer service, and great prices!:) never once left the store unhappy and their dog NEVER bothers us and iv been to the store multiple times! I always come here for feeder mice for my snakes! The owners give amazing advice for reptile care! read more
