Augustin Ramirez of First Response is both a brilliant mechanic and a mensch…read more I know that "mensch" is not a Spanish term, but a Yiddish one - but I have never come across another word that so well expresses how great I think Augustin is. I wanted to make an offer on an old van - like today. The big "Your Mechanic" national mobile mechanic outfit could not look at the car until Friday. I googled "Mobile Mechanic Calumet City", where the van was - and got Augustin's shop as the first listing. At 9 AM, he said he would look at the van at 1 p.m.! I was thrilled. I hired an Uber and went down to meet him. I trusted his vibe immediately. I could tell he was a regular guy and very savvy. The seller was off running errands and texted me that he would be there in 10 minutes. As he drove in with the van - which was much newer than the one I have been driving -, I thought, "Wow! It's beautiful." Augustin said to me,"The suspension is shot. that will be $800." I asked him, "How the hell could you tell that in 30 seconds?", but he had no time to answer before the seller was out on the street with us. I have been trying hard to not let my romantic infatuation with new vans drive my decision making. I tried to ask a hardball question of the seller: "You keep emphasizing how wonderfully this van drives. Why did you tell me that you're driving around town in 2nd gear?" "Because it won't shift into 3rd gear." Augustin looked me straight in the eye and then the seller straight in the eye: "It needs a new transmission. That will be $1600." The seller protested, "You can put a new transmission in these things for $600!" Augustin said, "Not if you want it to last more than three months. $1600." Even though the seller had agreed to help me bring a mechanic to look at the car, it was out of gas and we could not take it for a test run. He climbed in a friends car with a gas can to go get gas. Augustin, seated in his pick up truck, looked at me with genuine pain in his face. "Don't do it! You don't want to put $2400 into a 2002 vehicle. A car that old with a busted transmission is scrap. It's not worth $500. He would never take that small an amount, because he probably will find a sucker to buy it for $2400." It was absolutely clear to me that Augustin was not just showing off how much he knew - he was genuinely concerned that I was about to get taken. I said, "Say no more Augustin. I trust you and I don't trust him. I don't want to be standing on the street out here with him when I tell him "No". Can I catch a ride with you to your shop and call Uber from there?" "Sure, hop in. You don't need to wait around for him. He's a flimflam man and you don't owe him anything." Augustin also does all kinds of auto repairs in his shop in Hammond IN - just across the state line from calumet City, Illinois. He won't travel more than a half-hour from his shop to do mobile evaluations, because it burns up too much gas and time. I've already told two friends about Augustin's shop and feel confident that he will take good care of their auto repairs. This guy is the real McCoy: avgenuine person who cares about his customers and also happens to be a brilliant mechanic. I recommend him very highly.

If they were unable to do such work, they could have just said that and I would have tried to find someone else. Wasted my time
