Terrific music, an amazing, attractive and talented cast, along with a riveting script and story! What more could one ask for? My big sis got me and Rus tickets to see this play for Christmas. Rus and I were a bit jaded after seeing Lysistrata, but Stick Fly changed our minds about Broadway again. This was truly an emotional and attention grabbing performance. Usually when I go to see a live play/musical there are 15 minute sessions in which I zone out because the show has become too boring or over-the-top for my attention...This didn't happen to me once during Stick Fly. It's going to grab your attention from beginning to end. Loved the entire cast and it was great to see Mekhi Phifer on Broadway! Added bonus: Lala Anthony (Carmelo Anthony's wife--Go Knicks!) was there to do an interview with the cast and Alicia Keys after the show. Rosario Dawson and Jesse Martin also studded the audience. AMAZING!!!!!! I don't think that is the word that can truly describe this funny, captivating play. The cast definitely brings the characters to life and have you thinking about some of your family craziness, the stereotypes you have, and wonder what other secrets are lurking. They act their butts off!! They probably couldn't do that w/o a well written play to begin with...Lydia R. Diamond is in the right business!! Condola Rashad, & Ruben Santiago-Hudson characters were my favs in the play. The story line pulls you in and keeps you wanting to know whats going to happen. Amazing! Everything was great. The set, the cast, the story and of course the music. From the beginning until the end they had my attention. I even got angry when the intermission lights when on and thought to myself "already?!" then I looked at my watch and it was already an hour and a half into the play. Everyone can relate to the family dynamics, socioeconomic puns, and racial jokes. The play was so funny my cheeks hurt after. The audience was so engaged and the reactions and high fives all around made it even better. There were some deep dramatic moments but when you least expect it they punch you with some laughs. Riveting! This play has it all. A gorgeous set, a multi-layered storyline told concisely and acted powerfully by a dynamic cast (Dule! Mekhi! see Ron C's run down) that evokes a range of emotions and leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat. Smart writing. Condola Rashad has excellent timing and handled her difficult role stunningly. One of the most powerful characters was one that was never even seen. My first encounter, which resulted in a burning infatuation with politics began in high school: US Gov't and Politics watching West Wing. Yes- I was a fan of Dule Hill since way back when. So when I heard he and Tracie Thomas were going to be in Stick Fly, I was psyched. And Alicia Keys wrote the music? I'm in. The plot was amazingly simple: two sons bring home their significant others to meet the parents. They fight, debate/discuss racial issues and personal issues and cry. Sounds boring? Hell no. Lydia R. Diamond's crescendo dialogue towards a climax was punctuated with staccato notes of laughter. Dule Hill, Tracie Thoms and Ruben Santiago-Hudson fell effortlessly into their roles. You believed they WEre the youngest son, neurotic financee and wise and flawed father. Not only was the acting beautiful: the set was elaborate and had great attention to detail. You look into the stage, through the living room and a huge diagonal cut in the living room allows you to see into the kitchen. There were three stairs that actually led the actors to a behind the set location. The backdrop to the house was rolling mountains and a sky. The crew was spot on with the lighting. The rolling mountains and sky at night became a cool purple with dark blue sky and to simulate dawn- the mountains would change to green and the sky to a light blue. The audience played into the ambiance. While watching a tense moment, a little old lady behind me would yell out phrases such as 'Hell no!', 'The bastard!' Her unintentional comical efforts were a great way to break a nail bitingly tense scene. I was in awe of the show, the actors and the set. Afterwards, I stayed to get my playbill signed by the actors. And I got a hug from Dule Hill! He was very approachable and sweet. I had an amazing time. Firstly I didn't get complimentary tickets from Yelp. Boo-hoo. But music by Alicia Keyes? All black star-studded cast? Sign me up! I knew I wanted to see this place as soon as I heard about it. So I did. And my balcony seats weren't half as bad! So why am I giving this play 3 stars instead of 5? Well, It wasn't the writing, that's for sure! This play is extremely well-written. It's intelligent--offers interesting commentary on topics that include family dynamics, race, racism, education, social hierarchy and our overall society; it's witty-- you have to be quick or you'll miss it. I think many jokes/ witty comments were often missed by the audience; it's funny-- most jokes can be understood by many but I think many were funny if you were familiar with black culture in the United States. The writer, Lydia R. Diamond, did a stellar job with this play- great playwright, hands down! The star studded cast that included well-known African American actors: Dule Hill, Mekhi Phifer, and Tracie Thoms unfortunately gave me high expectations for this show that were not met. I mean, I've seen these actors before and although they're not A-listers per-se, they're pretty good actors on the screen. I went in expecting a WOW performance and honestly, no one's performance was mind-blowing. In fact the only performance worth noting was Tracie Thoms'; she really embodied the essence of her character-- she elicited emotional responses from the audience-- she made you cheer with her, cry with her, laugh with her and even become upset at her. You got to know her, to like her, to hate her, and to love her all in one show. Amazing. Undoubtedly, it also helped that her character was very approachable and reminded me a bit of who I was/am in college but overall she was the only indispensable character among this cast. Harsh but true. Yes this play does portray many stereotypes; it's a play on stereotypes (no pun intended). This writer uses stereotypes to her advantage-- to present them in a different light, to add new commentary to an already established discourse. A different perspective, if you will, on topics people tend to feel uncomfortable speaking freely about. Brilliant! Unfortunately many things didn't deliver, especially the original music. Created by Alicia Keyes, I expected the music to be divine but it was simply mediocre. In fact, music is not a major component of this play and is merely used for transitions. Sad, really. A culture that relies SO much on music you would think that the music would play a major role but needless to say: it didn't. Bummer. I would still recommend this play to people who love Broadway shows, like I do. The writing is GREAT. Tracie Thoms' does an exemplary job embodying her character, Taylor, and reaching out to the audience! My one piece of advice?-- Don't go in with any expectations and you'll enjoy it way more! read more

I was hearing a lot about this Play and was really psyched to finally see it... I can only use one word to describe it how I see it... AMAZING. The story is like no other and you can REALLY relate to the characters and situations. I don't want to spoil it, but it's quite moving. I really got into each character. Full disclosure- I had free tickets through a Yelp event. I think that it's important to mention this sort of thing up front, as it could really present a conflict of interest. This is not meant to be a great play- merely entertainment. The dialogue was snappy, but that was overshadowed by a predictable plot and some extra-hammy acting. In a scene where Mekhi Phifer's character attempts some awkwardly mean-spirited seduction, the whole effect was so over the top that I expected a super-villain laugh out of him. Also, on the Alicia Keys involvement- this isn't a musical, and her contribution was in the form of forgettable 30-second instrumental interludes (some of which were basically just drum machine loops). Don't believe the label on the box. The problem that I have with this (very fun) play is that for Broadway ticket prices, a customer has a right to expect more than melodrama. I am nowhere near cultured enough to be a theatre snob, but I can appreciate an odd irony about the writing of this play- Lydia Diamond tries so hard to reference highbrow social topics that it leads to a few lowbrow laughs about how clumsily the whole thing hangs together. The other laughs came from the genuinely clever one-liners and banter, though those were offset by the groaners such as "I'm going to be frank with you.." "Frank? I thought you said to call you Flip." There, I just groaned again. read more

The play "Stick Fly," produced by Alicia Keys, is a family dramedy set in Martha's Vineyard. What starts out as a seemingly innocuous family getaway with two sons bringing home their girlfriend and fiancee to meet the family ends up being a weekend where family secrets, prejudice, racism, and class emerge and clash in a divisive and memorable way. After having seen two plays in the last two weeks, I can finally confess that perhaps I just don't "get" plays. I freely admit that I absolutely LOVE musicals with their buoyant tone and inevitable happily-ever-after, but with plays...maybe it's the lack of a true resolution at the end that leaves me feeling a little unfulfilled. Is the purpose of a play to present a slice of life and reveal how altered a character is between the opening of the play to the time the curtain comes down? If that's the case, then this play really knocks it out of the park. What we don't get, however, is a sense that the characters are "better" or anything - just different. The performances were very good, and Condola Rashad (daughter of Phylicia Rashad) in the role of "Cheryl" especially impressed me as the daughter of the (offscreen) family maid. I thought the actors did very well in defining each of their characters, even if some of them made me want to smack them in the head with a two-by-four. The staging and direction took full advantage of the unique set, which presented a sumptuous family room, an airy kitchen, and an outdoor patio simultaneously. The writing is funny with a serious underlying theme, and the story unfolds in a way that continued to hold my interest (even if the ending left me a little cold). WOW. As you can see from the other reviewers, the show just blows you away. In an instant you are engaged to all the members of the family and their significant others. The dynamic is very real and everyone can relate to what they are saying and going through. All the actors were spot on and very believable and without giving too much away, there was a point where the whole audience was like OOOH at the same time. You just knew everyone felt/thought the same thing at once. Great flow throughout the scenes as well. Thank you so much for the Yelp Night. I would highly recommend the show! read more

I liked it! Very deep, complex and definitely requires a full 2.5 hour attention span to absorb, but I loved the storyline & various themes that emerged. i went because of the Alicia Keys name, but Dule Hill and Mekhi Pfier also won me over with their acting. I had seen both on tv, and wasn't sure how they'd translate on broadway, but they did a fantastic job. Being a minority myself, it shows the identity confusion in various economic classes and that no one really has it easy. I'd especially recommend this to the African-American community to check out. The set was simple and classic, and it was a small cast of just 6....nothing fancy compared to all the other broadway song and dance productions out there.Go if you're looking for a new and intriguing broadway play to check out....that you can discuss at length with your friends later! read more

3.5 Stars. I liked it but I wouldn't say I'm a fan. Thanks to a friend, I was taken as a plus to this show when I didn't get in to this particular Yelp Night! This play exceeded my expectations but I wouldn't call it amazing. There were some highs, there were some points where I felt it was 'meh'. But nevertheless, I did have a few good laughs and, to the amusement of Ron C, have several "oh snap!" moments. The cast is rather impressive and they are all great actors. But I felt Tracie Thoms, who plays one of the girlfriends that wants to be accepted into the family, over-acted at times. It sometimes felt a little over dramatic. I loved how there were no set changes because you focused on the characters more than the environment. Overall, though, I did enjoy the show. I particularly loved how they touched on race, class and identity issues throughout the show. read more

OH. MY. WORD. This play was FANTASTIC. I will be perfectly honest: I had not heard of this play until the lovely people at Yelp did another one of their lotteries for free tickets. They have yet to let me down with a bad show. They know how to pick tix for what's excellent ("Elf" and "Born Yesterday" [also at the lovely Cort Theatre this past spring] come to mind...), so, despite being clueless to the premise of this play, I signed up. I score a pair. My friend Mariko and I put on our "Tuesday Night Best" (...okay, we smoothed the wrinkles and dried the rain spots out of our work clothes) and headed to Cort Theatre! I felt for each character, whether it was love or hate or something in between. (As for Taylor, I wanted to smack her in the face for the vast majority of the play, but I was enjoying this feeling of hate towards her. Ha!) Each character was aptly acted and the actors were wholly captivated. I laughed out loud innumerable times. Even the drama was brought across in a hilarious and, at times, relatable way. Granted, yes, I found it to have cliched parts and predictable parts I picked out right away...but this is me caring. *pffft* I'd like to add a sixth star to the woman in the row directly behind me, approximately three seats to my right. When the character of Flip tried to angrily seduce an old flame of his, his line of, paraphrased, "When you have the best orgasm of your life, it'll be my name on your lips," was met with this woman's exclamation of, "Son of a BITCH," followed promptly by "That BASTARD" approximately fifteen seconds later. It honestly added to the atmosphere. Yelp, thanks for another great show to experience. All those involved in the play, kudos to an absolutely superb production. (And to the gentleman in seat J2 in the orchestra, if you read this, I sincerely apologize for stepping on your foot. This play was EPIC. Carol and I had received these tickets for the holidays from her sister. When I opened up the card and saw a Broadway play I was kind of disappointed because of my previous experience with seeing Lysistrata Jones. Maybe it was the musical thing, or the ancient Greek fused basketball thing but Lysistrata Jones was horrible, compared to this at least. We barely made it on time, but the second we arrived I was impressed by how close our seats were. We were sitting house right 4th row from the stage. It was beautiful. The members of the play were great. All the actors/actresses in the play are very well established, so I was under the impression it would all be overhyped, and overacted but everything was GREAT!!! The actors came together well, and as much as I hate to admit it I almost had a NEAR TEAR DROP moment. It was all kinds of throw whatever is in your hands moments that occurred. Also you know it's a great film when every minute and 43 seconds people are going "mhmm", or "woooo" or "OH NO HE DIDNT" The night we selected to go to Alicia Keys happen to be there, La La (New York Knick Carmello Anthonys Wife) , Rosario Dawson (Kids, Hitch, 7 pounds) and Law and Order cast. as I started... I was lucky enough to get two free tickets to this wonderful show through Yelp (thanks to Jane K.!) Our seats were amazing (left, third row, orchestra!) This was my first time seeing a play that didn't involve singing, dancing, & acrobatics - OH MY! This was a raw, uncut story of a family who seemed envious on the outside but, behind closed doors it was a whole different story. The grass may look greener on the other side but, there are always imperfections. There was no tiptoeing around awkward moments with this family. From start to finish, I was interested in the story line. There were quite a few LOL moments and a few times, sad sniffles were heard throughout the crowd. The emotion and passion of the characters was so believable. I don't want to give away too many details of the play, because I highly recommend seeing it for yourself. It displayed the points of view of all the amazing actors. And let me emphasize AMAZING actors. I was so impressed that they were able to memorize enough dialogue for two full hours of entertainment. They all played their parts phenomenally. I believed the tears, felt the anger and resentment, envied the love, and sympathized with the stereotypes and treatment of others. I loved the design of the stage set. It made me feel as if I were visiting Martha's Vineyard (and I have never been there.) The recreation of the inside of the home was gorgeous. I wanted to live there! The music Alicia Keys composed for the play, fit ideally. It was basically just her piano interludes but, if you didn't know she had a hand in the play, you'd say "That is so Alicia Keys." See this play. It will be worth it for the acting alone. The story may be a little predictable at times, but you won't be disappointed. And to all that asked me, yes, Mekhi Phifer is just as hot in person. read more

Although I've been to previous Broadway shows, most of them are musicals and the handful of plays that I've seen, I'm not proud to say I occasionally dozed off. Stick Fly did not send me to snoreland. It was fast-paced although there were some lulls and the play itself is a bit long. Great acting from the whole cast especially the father. Amazing play! The most fun I've had in awhile. I received free tickets from Yelp and didn't really know what the play was about except from what I gathered by quickly skimming the synopsis. I was so surprised by Sticky Fly's amazing cast (especially Dule Hill from Psych - Gus!! and Mekhi Phifer!). Talk about eye candy ;) Our tickets were for Orchestra D10 and D12 seats on the right most side of the theater. At first, I thought it wouldn't be a great location since we were all the way to the right but it was actually a great spot! The way the stage is set up, you can get a great view from essentially anywhere in the entire theater. The play itself is HILARIOUS. My roommate and I couldn't stop laughing. It's fast paced and kept me entertained and interested throughout the entire show. There wasn't any lag and never did I get the urge to check my phone and I'm addicted to it! I loved the show and would definitely recommend you to go see it. The only gripe I have is the size of the bathrooms in the theater. There was a line of about 15 people in both the downstairs and upstairs (only 2 stalls!) women's bathrooms. Take a pee break before you get to the theater!! P.S. Yes it was a decent broadway show but seem like the 1st Act was a little slow for me but it did pick up the pace after the intermission. The theatre was pretty pack and I can see tons of fellow yelpers all over the place. I saw some of the charter before on T.V/Movies so that was pretty excited. I was considering getting tickets for Chicago but decided to search for an African American themed show since its "black history month". I found Stick Fly...had never heard of it but it had decent reviews so we went to get "rush" tickets. I just learned about rush tickets yesterday...I generally buy center orchestra seats but we ended up with partial view orchestra for a fraction of the price. At Intermission I realized that I'm used to musical productions on broadway, with all of the set changes and costumes, but this was a play. A play that examined the race and class issues that lie beneath the surface of society but have a tremendous impact on social, economic, and political relationships. The vacation home was a perfect setting for interrogating family dynamics, the script was excellent, and the majority of the acting was well executed. The "talk back" with Alicia Keys and Lydia Diamond was a bonus but carried through the intimacy of the script. I think this is the first "show" my husband thoroughly enjoyed. read more

Finally, an intelligent play featuring a primarily African-American cast! I didn't know what to think at first, hearing that Alicia Keys was one of the producers. I, as someone who doesn't cry often, was deeply moved by the story. It started off a little slow, but the cast quickly found their groove and I was engrossed in the play. Drama Saturated Play I must say! Stick fly was filled with ironic twists between the characters relations to one another and then segues in to moving social issues like infidelity, race, and economic stratification. Very well developed script and an excellent cast! A strong message that was seen for me throughout the play " things and people are not always what they seem to be or portray themselves to be, every human being has layers and with those layers create the individual be them bad or good." Really loved this play. The entire cast was top notch and believable in their roles. I found a deal on tickets through Travelzoo and the best part was that this theater is small enough so that there really are no bad seats in the house. The themes of the play vary from racial, gender, socioeconomic, family, etc. Something for everyone to identify with. It's really not just a "black play." My wife and I enjoyed both the humor and the drama, not to mention the excellent stage direction. I heard the run of this play is ending soon, so hurry up and go see it! read more

This play could have been 5 stars but the filthy language was overkill. The constant use of the "f-word" in regular conversation showed either the lack of good vocabulary either on the part of the character or the play's writer. That was unfortunate because it made certain conversations less powerful. This was a play with a lot of twists and a gripping story line. The drama was great and kept everyone entertained. The actors played their parts well. The theater was intimate and most sears were good seats. The set was beautifully decorated. read more

BRAVO! I laughed, I cried & I had a "ah ha" moment! I had the pleasure of seeing Stick Fly last night with a good friend of mines, funny thing is she actually received the tickets through Yelp, who knew! Any who, this play was excellent from the gentleman passing out the Playbill to the curtains closing. I am still at aw over it, this plays MAKES you think literally. I went in not knowing much about the play other than Alicia Keys is the Producer and let me tell you if she produces another play I will be there! I actually want to see it again and plan on it but this time I will take a note pad and jot something's down through out the play. KUDOS to Tracie Thomas & Condola Rashad! SUPERB especially Ms. Rashad, I wasn't expecting such a good performance from her due to the fact I don't know much about her other than she is Mrs. Huxatables daughter (lol). I love how the story has so many avenues but they are all recognizable. Everyone present day should be able to relate to at least one cast members role, I especially related to Tracie character, I will never look at fly's the same way again and how they are studied and how that relates to us as adults. Once again I feel like an oddball, because I so did not enjoy this play. I put this play on the same shelf as a tyler perry production. I did enjoy Mr. Santiago's performance. I often dis like "black" plays because i find them to preachy, always trynna tackle like 50 different problems in the black community. i would have preferred to view a play about the black bourgeois life in martha's vineyard, the everyday trivial things, instead im preached to about racism and classism. the reason why i enjoyed watching the film best man, not because it was such a great film, but it addressed everyday normal life without all the race and class issues. read more

The two LeVay brothers bring their respective girlfriends: one black and one white, meanwhile the daughter of the family's maid subs for her ill mother and is harboring a big secret. The ensemble acting was superb. There is a lot going on with several subplots to flesh out each character and relationships and contributes to an explosive final act that left the audience laughing but empathizing at the dysfunctions of family. The play, because it is a comedy, doesn't probe too deeply with the issues it presents. I would recommend you see it but with tickets being over $100 a pop, i'm not sure it's worth it. To be honest we chose to see this show over others because of the reasonable price, so we weren't sure what to expect. I was also a little apprehensive because any other time I have been to a show with a star-studded cast, I have been disappointed. This was not the case for Stick Fly and we were pleasantly surprised: this was not a 'what you pay is what you get' experience. The show was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone. The acting is superb, the writing is witty and the plot is engaging. You laugh, you cry, and you leave thinking about your own family and life at large--what else could you ask for?! Also, the theater is great because it's small and intimate so there isn't a bad seat in the house. We had front balcony seats and we still had a great view! read more
