I visited this salon in December because I was looking for a salon closer to me, as my regular curly hair stylist is based in Los Angeles, and I wasn't going up there anytime soon. I specifically requested a stylist who specializes in curly haircuts. When booking the appointment, I asked the receptionist directly if the stylist I was scheduled with specialized in curly hair. I was told yes. When I arrived and checked in, I asked again and received the same confirmation When I met with the stylist, I showed several reference photos, all with the same curl pattern and texture as my hair. I was very clear about what I liked and, more importantly, what I disliked in each photo. Above all, I explained that I was looking for more volume and more layers. It became apparent during the cut that the stylist did not know how to properly cut textured or curly hair and was not truly trained as a curly hair specialist. As the cut progressed, it was clear that my mid-layers were cut significantly shorter than my top layers, creating an uneven shape that did not support curl formation or volume. By the time we got to styling, I was honestly just over it. I left the salon disappointed with the result. I should have spoken up in the moment, but as someone in her mid-40s who has had curly hair her entire life, I know when a stylist simply does not have the training. There is no benefit in critiquing technique that isn't there. Stylists may be taught the basics of cutting curly hair in school, but that does not make them specialists. Curly hair requires advanced training, certifications, and ongoing education. I specifically requested a specialist, and that distinction was not honored. If you have straight hair and are looking for a basic blowout or loose curled blowout, this salon is likely a good fit for you. However, if you have any texture or curl pattern at all, I would strongly recommend avoiding this salon and seeking out a stylist who is truly trained in textured and curly hair. After this appointment, I went to Los Angeles to see my regular curly hair stylist. She had to correct the cut, address the uneven layering, and reshape my hair entirely. The difference was night and day. My curls were defined, clumped, full of volume, and healthy. They were not frizzy. The photos speak for themselves. I'm sharing this to be honest and helpful. Sara has been doing my hair for about a year, and her work has been nothing short of excellent! I came to her with damaged, over-processed fine blond hair. I'd been bleaching it for decades, and sought Sara's expertise to restore it to my natural color and grow it several inches. To complicate things, I swim in saltwater or a chlorinated pool 3-5x a week, which does a number on hair even with a swim cap. And yet, after working with Sara, my hair is shiny, feels thicker than it ever has, doesn't separate or look stringy anymore (even though this is nearing the longest it has ever been), and doesn't tangle profusely like it used to. She recommended L'Oreal's Metal Detox shampoo, which removes all of the minerals in San Diego's hard water--and my ends no longer turn green! I regularly get compliments on the color (and all we're doing is toning it now). Her cuts are beautiful and I'm loving the extra length I've been able to grow. ***STAY AWAY*** I booked with Stevie (owner) and instead received treatment from very inexperienced apprentices who ultimately fucked up my hair. My wedding is in 6 weeks and I booked Stevie bc I liked her work on instagram, had I known this was a teaching salon and she would be delegating 80% of the work to her students, I would have NEVER came. So starting out, she was 25 minutes late getting me back to the chair, she told me to compensate she would throw in a free shine bomb and hair treatment (never happened). Ok great, showed her my inspo pics, told her about my wedding. She started foiling my hair but after 15 min she ran to another client to do a cut.. ok the apprentice takes over and takes me to the blow dryer, then washes my hair and adds a color root melt and toner. He then takes me back to the chair and starts blow drying. I am completely shocked my hair is full on blonde!! I almost started crying and complained to which they had to tone me again. While he's toning me for the 2nd time, Stevie is with a different client doing her foils (this is a different from client from the cut). By this point, we're 3 hours in and I'm super anxious and time crunched. My hair is not at the desired color I wanted but I just wanted to leave. They charged me $406 for a lived in balayage. Two days later this what my hair looks like (photos below). I reached out and asked if I could come in for a toner. Stevie said it was my shampoo that stripped the color and that she wouldn't fix it bc she wasn't the stylist for me. She then proceeded to give me only a partial refund.
