I went to this candy shop the other day while in the area. As you walk in you are greeted with the smell of delicious chocolate! They have so many options for truffles, lollipops, chocolate boxes, anything you can think of! I bought their white chocolate, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate peanut butter cups. First off, four generations of buying candy should tell you something. Secondly, I'm over 2,000+ miles, so dropping by can be challenging. Mail-order is really the only option, and living in the Sonoran Desert only certain times of the year work temperature-wise to ship. So the order arrived today in perfect condition. There was a cold pack at the bottom, the candy was wrapped in some type of thermal wrap and the chocolates that needed additional padding like marshmallows was well thought out. Chocolate is a subjective taste. There certainly are nuances you can detect, like commercially Ghirardelli or Guittard, and I'm sure there are other chocolateers out there. But Stevers quality has never faulted me in the sixty years I've been buying quality chocolates. read more

I ave a medical problem and I think of old style candy we have back in the 60's . My son had ordered what I was talking about which was 'creamed filberts' and black walnut chips. The creamed filberts were good but the black walnut chips were stale and like a gummy chewy. I called the company and spoke to a women in sales, explained what I just wrote and she said ' yeah, well ' and that was it. She stated they get them in fresh, maybe they should start checking them. Prices are a bit high, but it's local, and delicious so worth it. Found a few novelty items as well that will make great gifts. Stever's is a staple on Park Ave with excellent chocolates! I had one goal with my recent trip, which was their caramel apples that they have in the fall on Fridays & Saturdays only. I got the sea salt fudge caramel apples that they make with granny smith variety for $5 ea. Apples were crisp, tart and perfect with thin layer of gooey caramel and small amount of fudge and crunch of sea salt. They also have some other flavors such as M&M covered caramel apples. Keep them refrigerated prior to taking off the paper as recommended, makes it much easier to cut and serve. I picked up a couple Halloween chocolates for my nephews and they loved the chocolate pumpkin pops. Parking on the street usually isn't that bad, keep in mind Park Ave area tends to be busier Saturday mornings. Service is always friendly. I have been shopping here for many years. A new owner took over and completely gutted it and it looks absolutely horrible. They have less supplies less candy than they ever used to this year. They had signs that said we're running out of candy. That's never happened in past years yeah, the old system they had was crowded, but it worked. Do you ever hear the saying don't fix what is brokethey have way less items to choose from, and they have in the past they will not stay in business since the new people took over it just looks absolutely horrible in there. I've been a customer since I moved to New York nearly twenty years ago, stopping in once or twice a year, for chocolates to mark special occasions. I've always loved the exceptional and friendly service, not to mention the enormous selection; by large this place is a wonderland of confectionary delights. For years, I've said there's no place like Stever's Candies! The company was sold to a new owner outside of the Stever family recently and they have put forth considerable effort to remodel the store to give it a fresh new look. I wish they had spent some time running the business first, though. We are in the midst of the winter holiday season and their stock is limited. The worker at the counter said that "production is behind due to the remodel." When your business is to sell candy, and you do not have any candy to sell, that does not bode well. I come here EVERY YEAR at this time. I came today (Tuesday midday). I think this is the last time. 2 young ladies at the counter were very bothered that I wanted some of my $287 purchases wrapped - they offer gift wrapping as part of the cost. As soon as I asked they rolled their eyes and looked at each other - to which I replied "you seem bothered that I asked for wrapping". They were unaffected by my disappointment. How dare we, the consumer, have reasonable expectations! I have experienced a bit of this in years past at Stever's, but not this blatant. Their products are quality but a bit overpriced. Chocolate/candy is a luxury and I don't mind paying for good quality and service. But I do expect both. I don't expect this review make a difference. I had the good fortune to live within a block of Stever's for 7 years, and during that time I fell in love with their chocolate. They are a Rochester institution, owned and operated by the same family for decades. Their selection of chocolates is unparalleled in Rochester and I especially love all of their Rochester (lilacs, skyline) solid-chocolate molds, which I always pick up for friends and family abroad when I travel overseas. I am also a fan of their homemade (chocolate-covered, of course) marshmallows and their chocolate covered mints. And when chocolate-covered berries are in season, I have to stop in and grab a treat just for myself. They are also great for birthdays, holidays (especially Easter and Xmas), and they offer lots of different seasonal treats, like sponge candy. Note that they are always busy, and they work pretty hard, so they usually close for all of the month of July (not Aug as noted in my original review) for vacation. The interior has been ruined with the tacky pink and white. No charm at all. Less selection and quality is not up to standard. Smaller piece sizes too. Lay out is not conducive to large crowds. I usually spend $200 at Easter and again at Christmas. Not anymore. The dark chocolate/orange foil easter egg was the worst I've ever had. Instead of a nice cream filling, it was runny and way to sugary. Usually at Easter time you couldn't get in the door without waiting in a line when the original owners had it. Today there were only 6 people in the store. Too bad they kept the name, because the place isn't living up to the original owner's reputation. read more

So disappointed today when I entered the store to see that every remnant of the store I've shopped in for 30 plus years has been removed. The quaint charm of the place has been laminated over in white and stainless steel. The once warmth of the store is now cold, and akin to a convenient store. Some of the staples I have bought there over the years were not available...I was told they were sold out!!! Sold Out?? That never happened before, EVEN two days before Christmas some years! If you're looking for a candy shop... no, wait... any sort of shop who caters to their customers it's Stever's. It's no wonder they have been around for decades. The staff certainly does carry on the tradition set forth by the Stever family. We had ordered Easter candy this past spring to be sent to our great niece and nephew, 6 yr old twins in Franklin, TN. We did this from our home in FL. While the website is not the easiest to maneuver when placing an online order, they are more than willing to help when you call them. The twins, our nephew and his wife were so pleased with the Easter candy, we decided to order Halloween candy. The twins were so excited with the Easter treats... they each had their own little package of sweets to open. Time got away from us, so we weren't able to place our order until yesterday, Oct. 27th. We called the store, Danielle was so accommodating. Danielle pulled up our shopping cart on her PC, packed our order and assured us it would go out yesterday. This morning we were able to track the package, and it is scheduled for delivery right on Halloween. I'm not normally a sweets person, but I know a lot of people who are so the majority of my visits to Stever's involve me purchasing chocolates for friends and family. They have so many wonderful options to appeal to any sweet tooth with gummies, chocolate-covered everything (milk chocolate and dark chocolate), filled chocolates, bears, heart-shaped things, and everything in between. Their selection is pretty fabulous in that space they're in. I recently discovered they have dark chocolate Swedish fish thanks to a friend recommendation and picked up a box (~$7) for my mom since those are her two favorite things. Can't wait to hear how she likes them. Right now, the place is stocked for Valentine's Day. I didn't realize until my latest visit that they also ship chocolates! A lady at the counter was sending personalized chocolate hearts to her family, which looked beautiful. Great to know that's an option - one less stop and super convenient especially for holidays or special occasions. Stever's milk chocolate is too sweet for my taste, however, their sponge candy is my favorite in the area. That being said, their sponge candy prices keep going up, and the bag getting smaller. Stopped in the other day to buy some of the famous sponge candy of Rochester! I had to get my fill before heading back to Scotia. I bought two bags, one each of milk and dark chocolate. Then it became DANGEROUS. I began browsing. The next thing I knew I had chocolate covered Nutter Butters, chocolate covered Twizzlers and chocolate dipped wintergreen mints! This lead me to the case of individual chocolates. I have a new love......... It is like a nougat but much more dense and chewier. I chose orange and raspberry flavored ones dipped in dark chocolate. They were so chewy and the flavor lasted for ever in my mouth. I regret that I didn't buy more of those. Sadly, I ate them before I even left my friend's house to travel home. I will have to be happy with my sponge candy and all my other chocolate dipped treats. If you are in the Rochester area, stop in at Stever's. I suggest you follow their suggestion and take a basket when you walk in to hold all your candy. You think you won't need one......but you will!!! read more
