A number of national chain stores have claimed to recycle the heavy plastic bags that are used as…read moremailers. Walmart is one of those businesses. I was so delighted when I recently showed up at the Supercenter on Troy Road to discover that the Walmart's claims were true. I didn't know what the recycling bin would look like. So I asked for help and I found the staff to be gracious. They walked me over to the recycling area which was neat and well maintained. The bin was empty and ready to accept donations. I believe strongly in sustainability and reducing my carbon footprint. I've been looking for recyclers in the Capital Region. Sometimes, I get disappointed. There are chain stores (should I name them all?) which claim to recycle but do a poor job of it. Their employees are nasty and their bins are dirty, neglected and overflowing. I'm happy to share the good news that both this Walmart as well as the Target store in the neighboring shopping plaza are accepting plastic mailers for recycling and their employees have been welcoming. The recycling process time consuming and expensive. It's nice to know that some large businesses are giving back.

A few weeks ago, I was surprised to find they were selling fresh lychees. I was skeptical. Lychees for sale and I'm not in Chinatown? They weren't quite ripe yet. I bought one carton. In hindsight, I should have bought at least two. Previously, I've only purchased lychees in any of NYC's Chinatowns and they were usually perfectly ripe or slightly past due. So I gave these new lychees a few days. They ripened and they were delicious. A week later the lychees were all gone but fresh figs were for sale. I haven't eaten figs in years so I snapped some up. There were some super ripe ones in the carton which I ate right away. Others are still ripening so I can enjoy them over time. When I went back a week later, the supply at the store has sold out. The small yellow watermelons were great, too. Now, there are varieties of Rainier or Queen Anne cherries available. They're almost always pricey no matter where you buy them. Trader Joe's gives you a choice. The larger variety costs a dollar more. I went for the smaller ones which were wonderful. I saved a dollar and since they're very ripe I'm going to turn some of them into jam. As always, the staff is friendly and very helpful. It's clean, inviting and well stocked. He even said "I'm happy we were able to help you and excited for you!" I literally bought every one that they had in stock. Previously I lived in the area (maybe 5 minutes away)and had about $300 worth of groceries cashed out when I realized I forgot my debit card. I assume the manager moved everything to another register and bagged everything so when I came back I could pay and go. I was apologetic and very embarrassed. She smiled and reassured me and even applied coupons that I didn't have. Right after the remodel I was looking for an item. A guy on the floor spent 20 minutes looking for it because it wasn't where it was supposed to be. Turns out they no longer carry it, he found another location that had it, and had it held for me. A favorite associate was Nikki. My boy wanted a sticker and told her his name once at check out( she was pregnant at the time) she always remembered him by name, I've never seen her without a smile and my son always got a paid for sticker when she was working. Market 32 is a little higher in price but they give gas points to offset.

The refrigeration system seems to be working well. There was a lot of fresh fruit selling at exceptional prices. Egg prices here are very good, too. There wasn't a lot of staff. That's why I was very happy to see a self-checkout area. I got in and out quickly. It's not like a regular grocery store. There are just some things they don't carry. For instance, I didn't see a lot of fresh vegetables, but what they do have is well priced.

A friend who misses The Bread Butler, maybe even more than I, told me that there was an excellent…read moresourdough bread being baked by Anicca Bakery in Troy and sold at the Honest Weight Co-op. I was at the Co-op the next day. A variety of their breads are located in a shelf display across the aisle from all the other breads. I saw sandwich rolls, French baguettes, plain sourdough, three seeds sourdough, whole wheat sourdough, plain challah, everything topped challah, and a couple of variations that I don't recall. Some of the loaves are also available in half-loaf sizes. I purchased a loaf of 3 Seed Sourdough ($8.69) and a loaf of Everything topped Challah ($7.29). Both are excellent in their own right. The 3 seeds on the sourdough are organic dry roasted pumpkin, organic dry roasted sunflower, and organic golden flax seeds. Anicca makes a point of stating that they make every attempt to obtain all their ingredients within 200 miles of the Troy bakery. The sourdough has a nice chewy crust and a decent sour flavor. The challah has a softer crust than the sourdough, just a bit of sweetness and a slightly lighter colored crumb. The challah is also double bagged for some reason. The loaf is placed in a plastic bag before it is placed in the outer paper bag. Maybe that was to protect the everything topping? If you visit their web page https://aniccabakery.com/ you will learn that you can order online and pickup your order at Alias Coffee Shop in Troy. You may also notice that their web page does not mention all the varieties of bread that I saw at the Co-op and shows a more limited production schedule. Maybe their web page is just not up to date. Another issue I ran into was knowing whether the bread was fresh. Glancing at the information on the label of my two choices, I saw that the sourdough was labeled as "Date Baked on10/29/25" (GREAT! That was today), while the challah was labeled as "Date Baked 10/30/25." WAIT!!! How can that be? 10/30/25 is not until TOMORROW!!! I checked several other packages and found that all the packages of challah were labeled with tomorrow's date. As an aside, does that mean I wouldn't be able to eat the challah until tomorrow? LOL Or better yet, if I eat it today does that mean the carbs don't exist yet? Still, LOL. In any event, a Co-op employee noticed my confusion and insisted on informing management while wondering if this meant the sourdough could have actually been sitting on the shelf since 10/28/25. Today or not, but probably tomorrow also, both breads were excellent. I'm looking forward to trying a whole wheat sourdough.

Sure enough, I found that to be true. I introduced myself as a new resident to the neighborhood and explained that this was my first visit to their store. The owner introduced himself in like and stated if there is anything that I needed but couldn't find, they would do their best to offer it in the future. The store isn't the most organized but it's only because they carry so many different items that you'll be hard-pressed to not find what you need.
